Woody Allen Responds

In a letter being published in tomorrow's New York Times, Woody Allen responds to the claims that his daughter Dylan Farrow made. Namely that Woody Allen abused her when she was seven. Here is the thing. You can read the letter as much as you want and he brings up lots of good points and has a lot of supporting evidence on his side. The problem that Woody Allen will always have is that he ended up marrying one of his daughters. Woody can talk about results from Yale and independent experts and whatever else he wants but the bottom line is this. He lost custody and visitation rights and he married his daughter. I don't care if Soon Yi is his adopted daughter or was just a kid living there when he moved in. He treated her like a daughter. He said she was his daughter and at some point he married her. Are you telling me he didn't maybe want that same kind of relationship with Dylan first and later Soon Yi gave it to him. So, he can say what he wants and write what he wants, but he will never convince me he didn't sexually abuse his daughter.

  4. The prosecutor at the time said there was evidence that he had acted in a "grossly inappropriate" manner towards Dylan. They decided not go ahead with trial because the "victim was too fragile".

Easy solution for him to blame the while thing on an angry ex-spouse. It worked apparently in the Hollywood community.

  5. I believe Dylan (shes beautiful eh!) and Mia. Mia had been in 2 other high profile relationships and walked away without drama or financial compensation. She has done so much charity work and truly loves children. I cant see her having a vindictive bone in her body. Yeah I bet she is bitter regarding the stepdaughter thing but who would not be. Lame excuse on his lawyers behalf.

  6. and did anyone read that quote he said in some magazine in the 70s about something along the lines of "Dont be surprised if I end up in a love den full of 12 year old girls"?!?! Was that accepted or something in the 70s?! WTF

  10. The custody ruling back in 1993 is unsettling at best ... this is dysfunction at its purest, on both sides.

    http://amradaronline.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/205403621-allen-v-farrow-custody-ruling-june-7-1993-2.pdf

I'm still trying to imagine a scenario in which this many adults believed he was doing something inappropriate and didn't speak up OR at the very least, continued to allow him access.

I am not a defender of his, but I have to say I find Mia every bit as culpable, and if she created this in Dylan's mind as the ultimate form of revenge, then I think she is the abuser.

That she wanted to have a child with him after Dylan was born and after she was already finding him to be inappropriate with her, is baffling. We're not talking artificial insemination here. She continued to acknowledge him in an intimate way.

Even if he didn't do it, it is clear his opinion of children is not normal, but I don't think too many people have ever considered him normal.

The victim is Dylan only. She was abused either way. Very sad.

  12. I believe Dylan. Its unfortunate that folks focus on the whole Woody-Mia stuff. This is about a child being sexually abused by an adult who had access to the child an exercised their position of authority.

And we never believe the kids. Ever.

I remember being disgusted by the adult Woody macking on the child Mariel H in Manhattan. I was disgusted by this long before the allegations surfaced. Where there is smoke....

  13. Woody's response was very similar to this article written over a week ago, by a friend of his, in defense of him. The Woody Allen Allegations - Not So Fast. I feel like Woody waited so long to respond because he wanted to hear all of the reasons his defenders would come up. And I don't think reasons such as "No one else ever accused me of child molestation" means he is innocent in this! His response, while having some valid points perhaps, came off to me as written by someone who is guilty.

  16. Right on Enty!
I heard this too, about me: "Her mother brainwashed her, I'm not violent!" No, she didn't.
It's go-to bullshit. The DA didn't believe him, he refused to take the polygraph from the State Police, Judge Wilk said the medical report Woody harps on was "less credible" he lost custody and visitation. That says it all for me.

  17. Thank you Enty - WA did make some salient points to shame Mia, who is no saint, but what he wrote carefully covered his reputation. His defence team lost and destroyed evidence. His lie detector test was privately done by his team and info not shared.
I'm sure his letter will be waived as a flag of innocence by his fans, but I don't his BS. I do agree with him calling our Mia on making the Ronan Sinatra point, and that he brings up child support made me laugh. It is a bitch move on Mia, but he's trying to derail Dylan's story in his character assistant in of Mia.
My family was investigated for six months because my step monster was acused of molesting his granddaughter, my niece, she lied a lot and the family didn't know what to believe. The court found her testimony false. He stayed in the family for another ten years; she grew older and got the courage, tricked him to talk about that time and recorded him. She had told the truth. We were shocked and we had to examine our family dynamics, because we thought something like that would never happen in our family - we thought we knew everything that was going in our lives. We kicked him out of our family, cut him out of all photos, we never speak his name, he was in our lives for 20 years. We learned he molested his first family, his sisters. My point is, that one child's experience can be incredibly different to another siblings - that is how secret family lives are when abuse happens. Life can appear normal, our monsters are in disguise.
Woody groomed those children, succeeded and married one.

  22. Thank you for coming down so hard on this. I am tired of waffling and obfuscation. As Enty said before, he thought that Hollywood would find a conscience if Woody were not turning out movies regularly, and movies that regularly win awards for his actors. Did you hear where Kevin Spacey sent Woody Allen a copy of his Netflix movie "House of Cards" with more or less the message, why don't you hire me. I'm a good actor. I really, really needed to read someone being unequivocal about this. And I still worry about his children with Soon Yi.

  23. If you look at Stacey Nelkin's wiki page, you will see a note that she had an unacknowledged reltionship with Woody Allen that started when she was 17 and a student at Styvesant HS. She appeared in one movie Manhattan and her second role was cut. So maybe she was underage maybe she wasnt I dont remember age of consent in NY. (and just because its on wiki doesnt make it true but she has the ability to take it off)

  29. There is nothing he can say to change my mind - he is guilty. There are so many specific stories about how he acted like a creeper around her. Putting his head in her lap and other off-putting things. How many pics were taken of him holding Dylan in his arms with his hand up her extremely short dress? Tons of them. Do any of you have any pictures of your father holding you like that when you were young? I don't.

He basically harassed Mia in court for years.

In other news, I was reading the nanny's book. She states that Mia told her that she and Woody tried to get pregnant for six months and it didn't happen. That's when Mia ended up adopting Dylan. Then she got pregnant later with Ronan. Both of Woody & Soon-Yi's kids are adopted. Maybe he was shooting blanks and maybe Ronan is Frank Sinatra's (or someone else's) kid.

    I would love that...

  31. Bacon - 16? I heard she was 19.

This whole thing is just so ugly; it also makes me very uncomfortable to be witness to a family airing their dirty laundry in public.

I am not a defender of Woody Allen, and I do believe that Dylan was abused, but so many things are off about this. Never mind all the information that's out there, that just isn't true.

I have strong opinions about this, as does everyone else. I have no idea whether WA is guilty of anything, but to be fair, we have to look at everything, not just pick and choose what suits us.

I have no problem with WA responding. Mia Farrow opened this Pandora's Box when she gave the interview to VF, followed by her (and Ronan's) tweets after the Golden Globes. Then Dylan's letter was published. All these years, decades, Woody Allen never spoke about this. Wouldn't you want your voice heard, if you had been on the receiving end of such a campaign?

All I know is what I've read (just like all of us). Woody was asked to take a lie detector test, and he did. Mia wouldn't. Why did Mia give the go-ahead to have film clips which included her at the GG's, if she felt so strongly about Woody?

Yes, Woody was Mia's longtime boyfriend, but they never lived together, nor did he adopt Soon-Yi. He was not her stepfather or adopted father (that would be Andre Previn). I don't think there's any doubt that he crossed boundaries by becoming involved with Soon-Yi.

Another thing - there's never been a whiff of impropriety surrounding WA before this family saga, or since. He's been married to Soon-Yi longer than he was ever with Mia, and they had to go though the same hoops as everyone else when they adopted their daughters. I can't imagine the adoptions would have been approved if there was any evidence.

I don't believe for a moment that Dylan hasn't suffered or was abused.

Just trying to keep an open mind to all the possibilities.

So holding a baby's butt (covered in a diaper) is now evidence of sexual abuse? That's insane.

And yes, I do, and there are pictures of my husband holding our baby daughter while, gasp, touching her butt. Alert the police.

    This is just crazy.

  39. @Surfer, just so you're not out there alone, let me say that I agree with you.

I thought his piece was well-written and well-argued, particularly the part about the Dorrie Previn song, 'My Daddy in the Attic.'

Interestingly, I'm not a big fan of his movies. I've seen a couple - 'Midnight in Paris', 'Match Point' - and found them OK, but not enormously memorable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed. Surfer your thoughts are well written. I don't think there's any doubt WA makes questionable choices with women. He talks about being attracted to younger women. There's also a stupid joke he made about his 1st wife who was violated in some way ages ago. But there are a lot of holes in Mia's story too.

Also can we put to rest that Soon Yi was his adopted or step daughter? That he was any type of father figure to her? That she was a teen when they got together? Or that Mia didn't marry a man with as much of an age difference? And that WA spent a great deal of time at Mia's (kind of strikes me as the selfish sort that would want her to come to his place without 8 kids in tow).

I feel for Dylan. I think she was abused. There were a lot of older boys in that house maybe men too. Woody Allen just wasn't one of them.

  45. I think the elephant in the room here is the difference between the treatment of white children in the Farrow family and the Asian children in the Farrow family.

From what I can see, the white children - Dylan and Ronan - were more highly prized than the Asian children. Moses Farrow and Lark Previn (I believe) both complained of being treated like kitchen help and assigned additional chores, while Soon-Yi turned her back on her adoptive mother in favor of her mother's boyfriend, which does not suggest a close relationship with her mother.

Fast forward 20 years and it seems that neither Moses nor Soon-Yi believes Dylan's story, and Moses is talking about an atmosphere of hatred in the household.

Ronan backs Dylan, but maybe Ronan had a much different experience growing up in the household than Moses did.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ViciousV, tho we agree to disagree - he stopped me at the Previn "daddy in the attic" reference, and thought, shit "if" Mia did spin suppressed memories in Dylan, she's incredibly sinister to weave in that song into Dylan's story.
That's VC Andrews type of storytelling. And closer to some thing Woody would write into his version.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The team from Yale that cleared him was subsquentially found to be discredited, so these results werent gold. His behavior toward Dylan were creepy and highly inapprociate. I dont know wth Mia was thinking staying with him after she saw that. I'm sure Ronan was an happy accident, not on purpose. And the grooming and marriage of Soon Yi, a child!!!!!!, was just creepy to the max. She herself was troubled, adopted from Korea orphanage at age . Who knows what scars she carries? She may have seen Woody's attentions as "making it", and Woody was only too happy to indulge her.I read Woody came over every morning at 6am, and sat on the end of Dylans bed until she woke up. he had to be there. She wasnt to be put in bed until he was there, every night. So the chances he was weird with her are very high to me As for Hollywood honoring him, thats their business. Actors and workers have to make up their own minds. They will either think he did it, think he didnt, or think what he did has nothing to do with their work.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have always believed he molested Dylan and I am not going to be convinced by something an academy award nominated writer wrote after having several days to polish the excuses and justifications.

    ReplyDelete
  49. :Woody Allen never spoke about this. Wouldn't you want your voice heard, if you had been on the receiving end of such a campaign?:

    Not if you're guilty. No

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Kimba Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Mia intentionally used that song as a basis for an invented story. But creativity is usually influenced by what we've previously experienced, either personally or through media. Mia had undoubtedly heard that song, since it was on an album that referenced her. She may have had it in her subconscious and been more likely to suggest that something awful had happened between Dylan and her daddy in the attic. I don't even know that it was a conscious intention on her part to 'create a story.'. She loved her daughter, was incredibly angry at the time, and probably felt she was discovering the truth while, in fact, was inventing it. As an artist, I know how easy it is to reference someone else's work without meaning to.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I won't debate this issue, just make a correction and state a couple facts.

Woody NEVER moved in with Mia, and in fact never even spent a single night there. His relationship with HER kids was always as Mom's boyfriend.

He was at Mia's house for a few hours visiting after they broke up when the abuse supposedly occurred. There were several other family members there too at the time.

    +1 @ Topper

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Nutty - that is an excellent point you raise. I also remember Tam, the blind girl from Vietnam who hated Woody as well. She would run away from him and yell "Woody no goodie" all the time. When Woody would visit Mia's home he'd have gifts for all the kids except Tam and Moses, who would get 10 minutes of playing catch with Woody at the most, and even then Woody couldn't wait to get to Dylan.

This Moses situation has me perplexed as he was seriously wounded from the Woody/Soon-Yi fallout. He not only lost his father, he lost his sister. Ronan (then Satchel) was in Woody's home with Dylan when Dylan first saw Soon-Yi in bed with Woody.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Soon-Yi Previn was not and never was Woody's daughter. Woody never lived with Mia, not ever.

Soon-Yi was over 21 and she made a choice …as did Woody. I have never believed he did anything to Dylan.
It was a vicious attack from the beginning by a hurt woman who wanted revenge. Its all he said she said at this point.
So it's time for this to be over

    ReplyDelete
  63. SOMEthing must have happened to Dylan to have made her so messed up( anorexic, cutting) and abuse would certainly explain it. The thought and energy some invest trying to prove an unprovable child abuse allegation is creepy. And it's a 20 year old been there done that situation to boot.

For Mia and Dylan to bring it up AGAIN after all this time is unforgivable on their part. It has driven the wedge dividing their family much deeper, and that was a completely selfish, callous, and malicious act.

All they care about is hurting Woody, and the rest of the family be damned. It's the dysfunctional pot calling the kettle black. Pathetic and disgraceful.

  69. Krab, surfer, ViciousVivian, MISCH, angie...I agree.

  70. What is horrifyingly interesting is that in the 1970's and 1980's nobody was talking about abuse, ever, and if it was a family member it was swept under the rug a hundred times.

Flash forward to now, and the comments by Allen and Polanski make sense in the wake of their abusers and now they are just backtracking and backpedaling. What also makes sense is the court papers, victim interviews etc., it is hard now to buy your way into being "innocent", or worse to blame everything on the victim or the victims mother (who is angry as hell, because the abuser got away with it, as a mother you never let that go.

Hollywood should be ashamed of protecting these vile persons, fellow actors who bring their Oscar (Harrison Ford), defenders of Woody because he is "brilliant", as a person I can choose to not spend my hard earned money on these people, and I choose not too, maybe money will eventually mean something if enough of it goes away.

What is scary is how many more of these guys are out there in Hollywood because it is more accepted.

Sorry for the run on sentences, I get pissed and it's like my mind is working faster than I can type.

    ReplyDelete
  71. @angie and MISCH- when you've been abused and then see your abuser constantly applauded for their talent, you want justice. Dylan was not strong enough to raise her voice- she is now. Good for her!

I'm sorry if abuse makes you uncomfortable. You may have dealt with it 20 years ago, but the victim, Dylan, has not!

There is so many people talking about this and information gets distorted. Soon-Yi was not 21 when this relationship started with her sister's father. She was in her teen, and this man (who is how many decades older than her?) thought is was appropriate to have naked pictures of her. Whatever you think of Woody Allen's directorial skills- that is sick, and immoral!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Deep, first of all, I was abused, and secondly you won't find a credible therapist in this country who would agree that the way they are handling this is in ANY way healthy. Apparently they don't need therapy because a heaping helping of vengeance is what they really care about. Further, to just ignore the damage and abuse they're inflicting on other family members now by publicly reopening old wounds and dividing them even further in the quest for revenge as if it doesn't matter - is also sick, and immoral. You lose all credibility when you demonstrate that you're no better.

  74. Let's not forget that though Woody never slept at Mia's apartment (he thought it was disgusting because of all the pets she had), Mia would take the younger kids over to Woody's apartment to spend the night. Woody frequently spent the night with the family at Mia's Connecticut house. Kids in that house who considered Woody to be their father found out that he was having sex with their sister.

    ReplyDelete
  75. "He was at Mia's house for a few hours visiting after they broke up when the abuse supposedly occurred. There were several other family members there too at the time."

Just to respond to this point.

The presence of other family members in a home has not stopped untold numbers of grandfathers, fathers, stepfathers, brothers, uncles, boyfriends from abusing children in the family home.

Most pedophiles don't live with their victims.

    Just saying.

Woody Allen is widely perceived as having married his stepdaughter. Soon-Yi is actually NOT his stepdaughter, she's Mia Farrow and Andre Previn's adopted daughter and Woody never adopted her. But for obvious reasons, the mud sticks and - like I said - everyone perceives that Woody Allen married his stepdaughter.

Now bearing that in mind, if you really, really, REALLY hated Woody Allen and wanted to frame him for something really, really, REALLY terrible, and you were totally unhinged, what would you choose? I know, how about abusing his other daughter? Doesn't the frame fit perfectly?

    1. No! Not at all. Having him arrested for statutory rape of Soon Yi wld make sense.

  80. I'm not quite sure why Krab is some kind of scuzbag because he pointed out (accurately, I might add) that Woody's comment was clearly a joke. A bad joke, admittedly, but a joke nonetheless.

I'm also not quite sure why those of us who question the truthfulness of what really happened are pedo supporting, heartless, assholes. I suspect all who are questioning that molestation happened likely agree with me when I say we are NOT saying Dylan is lying, rather we are questioning the source of her memories.

The truth of the matter is false molestation claims are not uncommon in acrimonious custody battles. And the truth is that young children are VERY highly suggestable with very little effort. False memories implant in childrens' brains in the same place real memories do and, in a young child become every bit as real as "true" memories with the brain even creating its own memories to support the suggested memory.

  83. I seem to remember reading that the judge in the case was also found to be less than upstanding. And I find the DA's comments to really mean nothing more than that he really wanted to be able to convict Woody Allen of a crime, but realistically he couldn't get a conviction so he couldn't pursue it.

And I think Krab is hilarious.

Yes, I've been sexually abused too. None of what Dylan Farrow has said or done sits right with me. There is nothing to be said to convince anyone whose mind is made up in this case. But as for me, I'll stay on the fence because it is most definitely NOT "obvious" what happened.

  85. I think it was Hollywood Dime who posted some very interesting links and in one link to an article, there was a link to the legal thingie the judge wrote at the time. I won't say anything about it so as not to cloud anyone's opinion, but that legal document is worth a read.

  89. People who seem to honestly believe that children can't be coached about abuse or have false memories or even that child sex abuse wasn't talked about in the 1980s should google the McMartin trial.

Remember when Roseanne went on and on about her child sex abuse? Then she recanted, saying the memories were planted.

All of this was BIG NEWS in 1991, 1992, when WA was supposedly molesting Dylan.

  92. We are all making valid points, and Im learning a lot from the comments. Bottom line, we dont know what happened, you have to decide your comfort level with WA and go from there.

  93. My Comfort level, is telling me,, he is guilty. Just because no one has come forward, does not mean they aren't out there! There are many molesters out there who've never been charged.

  94. I may not have a horse in this particular race, but I have been around this track a couple of times. My ex-husband is now my son-in-law, and has been for 12 years. In addition, I was sexually assaulted by a family member when I was a child.

On the subject of Woody marrying Soon-Yi Previn: She is the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow and Andre Previn. At no time was Woody her adoptive parent or step-parent, since he and Mia Farrow were never wed. Yes, it is a shock when your lover leaves you for your of age child. You can either obsess over it or get over it and move on with your life. Personally, I chose to move on, but it sounds like Mia may have resented both Woody and Soon-Yi.

On Dylan and her sincere belief that her adopted father molested her: I am certain she believes she was molested, because it was drilled into her that the event happened, just as my mother drilled it into my head that I had to be lying about having been molested. By law, when Mia reported Dylan had been molested to the child's physician, the report had to be made to the authorities. If there was anything remotely resembling evidence that the claims were true, particularly in an era where people were arrested, tried and convicted based on false memories of small children (McMartin Preschool ring any bells?), the fact that charges were not brought says much. Looking at how her mother reacted when she discovered that Woody was dating a younger woman, I would not put it past Mia to have manufactured the circumstances to make the allegations in order to boost her stock in any upcoming custody battle.

For the record, I find Woody's film work to be unentertaining crap.

  95. Woody Allen is a manipulative, self-serving pig of a man who sincerely believes that as an "artist" he's above normal moral, ethical and social constraints.

The best review of his defense statement was a tweet, which I paraphrase: "So Allen's defense is: Mia is a lying bitch. And I was too busy fucking Soon-Yi." Yep.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Long time lurker, have watched this go on and on and on.

To those who bitch and moan about Woody's innocence and that Soon Yi wasn't his daughter, here's something to think about......

My stepfather dated my Mom for a couple years before they got married. He would bring me gifts and treat me good. When he was ready to get married to her, he asked me if I'd like to call him "Dad". He said he was going to be marrying my Mother. So he was "Dad", the only father figure I'd had in my life at 8 years old.

The weirdness began at age 9 when he made his first attempt at touching me inappropriately. It was a very weird relationship. He molested me until I was 18 and my Mother never knew. He was insanely sneaky and manipulative. He drove a wedge between me and my Mother so that I never trusted her and she never trusted me.

False memory syndrome is a lie, it doesn't exist. I'm now 33 and have a LOT of suppressed memories. Things have been coming up over time and I'll remember details about the abuse that I had put out of my mind. I didn't want the pain and I suppressed a lot of it. I remember small details that I didn't realize as a child, such as how he was aroused or would convince my Mom to leave and go shopping, as if he was doing her a gesture, or even take me out alone somewhere, like father and daughter.

I had a break down at 18 when he threatened to take away the things I loved most, my brothers and my Mom, even though we had a strained relationship. It came out to school counselor because she noticed I was wearing a sweater during hot weather. I cut myself and was suicidal. I lost friends and family and was treated as the abuser. I was threatened by a judge with prison if I committed perjury and was treated as a liar and a piece of shit by everyone for coming out and telling the truth.

You people who don't believe Dylan are the reason that so many children are molested now, because victims are afraid to tell the truth. Some will even recant their story because of all the mental abuse they have to take from parents, authorities, therapists, family, and friends who don't want to believe something so heinous could happen.

Children aren't just physically abused, they're also mentally and emotionally abused. They're told what's happening to them is love, but if they told anybody then nobody would believe them and hate them. They're given gifts and threatened at the same time. Child abuse is a complete mind fuck from start to finish.

The fact that Dylan is alive and sane enough to tell her story is a testament to the fact that she is extremely strong and resilient. She's telling the truth absolutely. Nobody could have made up the details she gave in just that one small story. If you read it and it didn't give you chills and make you weep for her lost childhood, something is extremely wrong with you. Don't sweep this under the rug as if it's nothing. More people are molested than you know in your life, they just keep it secret. It's become dirty to admit because you who persecute Dylan, you've treated it as a minor inconvenience making her and all other victims afraid to be treated like dirt. It's all we've ever known, but it still hurts.

You don't know their story, Woody could have been "Dad", Mia admitted as much but Woody kept denying it. You also don't know the mind games he played with Dylan. They all have them, every last one of them. Woody is a piece of shit who got away with his abuse and got fame and fortune and the love of idiots. He's the king of the molesters, and you worship at his throne. Children won't lie about something so huge, they can't make it up, much less make up the details. She'd have gotten the words wrong when retelling her story a few hundred times. Think about it. Idiots.

  99. Time for the shit from Mia to end. Another hysteri-bitch angry at the world because her career vaporized while Woody's continued. Look you weren't blacklisted out of favours to Woody. You were because you were a mega-bitch that ankled projects and pissed off every studio in Hollywood with her backing out of projects either before or even during production. Woody would be in custody if the authourities believed for a moment the kid's coached story. They don't. Her brothers and sisters except, the Sinatra love child, don't believe it. Hollywood isn't all of a sudden going to take her side, after 20 years, and blacklist Woody, while welcoming her back with open arms and make her a star again. They also out of pity won't make Dylan and Frank Jr. stars either. Just give it the fuck up for once.
