Mr. X Blind Items Revealed - Old Hollywood

June 13, 2014

Old Hollywood: Which almost A-list actor who is more famous nowadays for his premature death literally stalked out this A++ list Oscar winning/nominated actor so he could say he slept with him? The latter actor didn't have any good things to say about it, however.

James Dean/Marlon Brando

  4. There is a photo in Hollywood Babylon which Brando and Dean were in with a couple of other people, and Brando is discreetly flipping the bird at Dean, lol.

  12. jimmy was a pecker chaser? lol

back in the day when a&e really was about arts and entertainment ((sideye)) I watched the biography of james dean. they had archival footage of dean and paul newman during a screen test and as I remember dean was CLEARLY flirting with newman who looked embarrassed.

just googled. the video (much to my surprise) is on YouTube. I thought is was so obscure that it wouldn't be on the net. i saw this like, JEEZ, 15 years ago. huh

my computer will not let me play it for some dumb reason or another. it anyone sees it lemme know if my recollection was right.

  13. Apparently Newman liked meat with two veg.....he allegedly had a fling with Dean, and McQueen.

  14. @Joy - I seem to remember reading somewhere that James Dean was bisexual. At one point, when asked, he replied, "Why should I go through life with one hand tied behind my back". He never openly admitted to it, but gave quotes like the one above that hinted at it.

  15. I think Hollywood Babylon claimed Dean was gay & self destructive, self harm, intravenous drugs, sex clubs, etc.

  16. @stranger

    Tehehehe
Sounds like him. I got the impression that dean was only in the closet at the studios request (as per the era). I thought he was gay though. the bi-sexual surprises me.

DAMN! I gotta get this "Hollywood Babylon". ((ugh)) I feel like im missing so much.

  17. There's 2, Joy. Like with this site, take with the proverbial grain of salt. Kenneth was such an awesomely strange individual, worthy of a book himself!

  19. I met a screenwriter from back in the day who said Dean's nickname was tge ashtray because he had a thing for having guys stub out their cigarettes on his skin.

Dude sure enjoyed the dark stuff.

  20. Yeah, dean batted for the other team on occcaison. No surprise.

  21. I would think James Dean is at least A+. I read an article that said that James Dean's death also was the end of Marlon Brando's great acting. There was nobody else to compete with so he coasted. Brings an interesting twist to this story

  22. I think it was the video for the Celluloid Closet where Tony Curtis said that back in the day, most stars were omnisexual and orgies were not uncommon.

The women were beautiful, and some of the men were even more beautiful, so no surprise there.

Take Hollywood Babylon with an entire shaker of salt. It's fun but supposedly the human ashtray thing wasn't true. He did have lovers of both sexes, though.

    interesting...
brando WAS notorious for phoning it in. I find it interesting because NOW there was a reason behind it. there were no more james deans.

  24. I prefer the story about Brando and Olivier - much more fun.

James Dean was beautiful and charismatic, but he was so neurotic that I doubt he was a good lover. Having said that, I'd love to believe the story about him and Newman with Eartha Kitt.
Had he lived, his limitations as an actor would have become more apparent. You can see in his final completed film Giant, when he's playing an older version of his character, that he doesn't know how to act outside the realm of his own experiences.

  25. As for Brando's later lacklustre performances, it would be just like him to blame Dean's death. The truth is both more straightforward and more complicated. He was bored of working and disenchanted with the acting profession. Brando was at heart a very selfish man. If he wasn't having fun then he didn't see the point of putting in any effort.

You don't need Hollywood Babylon as a source on Jimmy's sexuality. He said it many times himself in quotes, there's also his military record, and his confidences in Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Harris, & others that have come to light.

He used to call-up Brando & Monty Clift in his pre-fame years just to hear them speak. Never crossed paths with Clift for significant time before he died tho. Nor do I think Clift would be interested, not his type.

pretending it was because of JDean is sooooo much more romantic.

Dean did have a dark streak too, I don't doubt he could get dark in bedroom too. He & others close to him have talked about it at length as well.

His dad was a fucking asshole who never wanted him and later abandoned him, sent him across the country to live after his mom died when he was like 7. While there he was then molested by a minister for years. The same minister was later used (especially asked for by his family) during his funeral, despite rumblings of his abuse with local kids already known. He had lots to be twisted mentally about.

We only have Eartha's word for it, mind you. But, yeah, she taught dance at the Actors Studio and both Newman and Dean were students at the time. Her verdict: "white boys are so delicious".
It's particularly apt to talk about Newman today, since he claimed that Barbara Stanwyck invited him to her apartment to hit on him.

@Yoi, Barbara did like much younger stars who had at least a whisper of bi-sexuality (much like her) about them, had documented relationships with Robert Wagner & Farley Granger. Newman would also fit that bill. They all kinda physically resembled the same type too- brown haired, blue-eyed, clean-cut boys.
