It has to be a really good movie to get me out to go see it. Movies are available so quickly now can't justify the price. Plus way more comfy at home no idiots & you can pause for breaks!
I think they just may become antiquated, and that disturbs me a bit. I'm old fashioned in certain ways.....traditionalist in others....I like going to the cinema
I can't stand movie theaters. I always manage to sit behind Tall Dude with Big Hair, or in front of Constant Commenter, or next to Obnoxious Laughter Lady, or a row down from Idiot Who Thinks a Toddler Will Enjoy Matrix: Reloaded. And since Hollywood is pumping out movies for foreign markets based on the bang/crash/sequel of inevitable profits, having Netflix and HBO make actually good shows that people want to watch is a good thing. We can even forgive Netflix for Oatmeal Schilling!
I hope so. We only go to the theater now if there is something the kids just have to see right away. The prices are ridiculous - $8 per person when I can rent it 2 blocks away for $2.79 or watch it on demand for $5, with unlimited people in the room!
That's kind of sad. I hope that never happens. I don't go see a lot of movies at the theater but I still want them to stick around. Do we really want to go out less? We will all become hermits; drinking, watching movies and eating in our homes and never going out into the world.
Not sure, there are plenty of folks who still love the whole movie theater experience no matter how expensive it is. Although I will say this whole 3D thing is a joke since 99% of the time the film doesn't look any different or add any special value to the experience other than you paid more money and are wearing funny glasses.
I disagree. I think theaters will be around for a good while longer. Personally I love the feel of the theater experience and the audience interaction/participation on really good movies. I'll go see a bad or mediocre movie just for the movie experience. I'll watch it at home later, but I prefer being in the theater with friends enjoying a good movie.

The demise of the movie theatre didn’t start with Netflix, it started with the VHS tape. Who didn’t think that being able to pause the movie and not miss anything while you went to the bathroom and grabbed snacks wasn’t the best thing ever?
I think movie theaters will live on but more as a cultural experience than as popular entertainment.

Last few times I been to the movie theatre I mostly saw older folks. Don't know what happened to the whole teenage boy/girl dating movie dates of my youth. As for myself, I mostly rely on DVDs. They come out 6-9 days later but cost about as much as I would pay for a movie ticket, overpriced drink etc.
Also. . With movie studios have to give a 50% cut to theaters in us and more overseas. I can see the studios trying to charge a premium to view 1st releases in your home instead. Via a 24 hour rental.
Still go to theatres - social thing - but I would not shed a tear if everybody stops going and the industry crumbles. Not many people realize movie theatres are owned by the same studios that make the movies. They lost my trust at 8$ Reese's pieces. I have no urge to fund ur 200 million+ CGI blockbusters
Eventually they might but not for a long time yet. Premiere magazine would often write these "death of cinema" articles in the late 90's - early 2000's and it hasn't happened yet. We still have a number of directors working today who make movies solely for the theater experience (Spielberg, Cameron, Scott, Scorsese and Tarantino) but once these guys are gone - who the hell knows? It's actually too sad to contemplate.
I like going to the movies-- I usually go to the early shows though - not crowded! If I watch a movie at home I end up doing 100 other things at the same time, get interrupted, etc. Going to the theatre is a beautiful escape - and I truly get to watch the whole movie.

Menahen Golan once said -- and this was way back in the 1980's -- that watching a movie in the theater was one day going to disappear. I think that day is almost upon us. My wife and I only watch movies at home once they are released "on video." I can't remember the last movie we went to the theater to see.
Mr. Disco and I love going to get appetizers and have a few drinks then going to watch a movie. We saw Guardians of the Galaxy in IMAX 3D and it was awesome. And now AMC is upgrading their theaters with more comfortable seating and lots of theaters here have bars. I think theaters are going to be just fine for a while.Netflix is doing the theaters a FAVOR by not making them waste a screen on any more of Adam Sandler's crap.
And if this happens, no more move theatres it will make life interesting because box office is where they make the most money on movies as a rule so I wonder then, without theatres, the movie studios are going to have to make up that loss of money somehow and Netflix needs content so I could see paying at least the same amount of money to see a new movie online as you would at the theatre.
It's going to shake up the already shook up world of movies.
I wish you could see all those movies that go to film festivals and never are seen again.
TIFF was going to set up something where if the director was willing to put those films on a VIMEO site and you would have to pay a small fee to watch it. But I didn't hear what happened to that project.
I think they're just going to evolve and independent theaters like Bowtie Cinemas will become the norm. I mean, who doesn't like a mimosa with a matinee?

I just can't/won't shell out $20-$30 bucks (including the popcorn) to see a mediocre film. I don't know that even the good ones are even worth paying that much.
The reason Gravity was such a huge success was because it's promotion was largely comprised of the "you HAVE to see this on the big screen," model - which worked effectively. Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. will be attempting a similar strategy with Interstellar next month. I expect that to be successful as well. And then of course, we have Star Wars next year.
What's also interesting is that when the analysts wrote all those "The end of moviegoing," articles a decade or so ago, they didn't anticipate the rise of the tweener girl audience - which just turned The Fault In Our Stars into a $300 million hit.
I saw a West Side Story on the big screen and was amazed. I had only seen it on TV. I love going to the movies. Taking my two grands to a 3D is $50+. If it's a movie I really want to see I go alone. I don't wanna talk or have anyone close to me crunching popcorn or rattling candy wrappers. I made the early bird last week so it was $5.50 to get in and then $11 for popcorn and soda. And like I said the other day, the Jason Bateman movie sucked.
Some things are just better on a big freakin' screen. I loved Guardians of the Galaxy, and although I will buy the DVD I'm glad I saw it on the big screen first.
I hate the thought of no theatres, but have to admit it's been a couple of years since I've been to one. I also hate the thought of paying someone whose big investment is Sandler..yikes
I go to the theater maybe once or twice a year. I'd love to go more often but I don't. Not because the theaters are crappy - we have some very nice theaters near us - but because the movies are. I'm not paying $10.50 or whatever the current fare is for some POS. F--- Hollywood.
I only go to the theater for real big budget type movies like Godzilla. I hate the morons that ruin the experience by talking or texting during the movie. I have a 60 inch high def tv and will be getting a 70 inch in a year or so. I love watching movies in my house and especially love that I can drink or go to the bathroom whenever and however I want. Theaters are on the endangered list. Just a matter of time
With Sandler's decade-long string of commerical flops, I have to think that Netflix was his "studio" of last resort. After the failures this will churn out, he won't be able to get a deal for a used car commercial.
I'm fine with watching a movie at home, but I'd really miss the popcorn. I know it's ridiculously overpriced, but I love it that much. And seriously, you Americans only pay $8 for a movie???? I hate you all. LOL
How many bombs does he have left? I can't remember the last time a Sandler movie wasn't outright disgusting and insulting on every level. The Wedding Singer, maybe? Whatever, though. And hell no movies won't become a thing of the past. They're still cheap entertainment and seeing them in the dark in a huge room with other people is more fun than watching them at home.
