Today's Blind Items - The Spy - Old Hollywood

Much has been made of the life and career of this former A list mostly movie actress. Books and films have been made about her and she was involved in so many relationships either as the other woman or the woman being cheated on. After her movie career, she had a tragic life. This though is about what she did before and during the early stages of World War 2. Our actress was a spy against the US. While seemingly the rest of Hollywood was joining the military, our actress was touring bases and meeting dignitaries and passing everything over to the Soviet Union. Our actress was a die hard communist. She was so committed to the cause that she basically gave up movies for half the year each year to go to New York. She said she went there for Broadway, but even though she was married she ended up sleeping with countless men who the Soviets wanted to blackmail and get information from. She was a famous face and every man she flirted with instantly wanted to sleep with her. She was the perfect honey trap. No one had any idea she was setting them up to be used and blackmailed.

I think it's Marlene Dietrich. In order to deflect FBI curiosity, she became a US "spy" who collected info on many, many trips to 'entertain troops'. I'll always think this is Dietrich.

Not sure Marlene had a "tragic" life after films. She was touring successfully into her 80s. Yeah, she hated being reminded she was getting old, but hardly a tragic afterlife.

While it says the person spent six months a year in NYC for "Broadway" the Broadway Data Base lists no shows with Marlene during the 1940s. Don't think she was the thype of girl to sit around unemployed si months of the year.

  22. Garbo was my first thought but didn't check any links for backup.

  23. Not Deitrich by a long shot....she hated the commies and worked tirelessly for the American military morale....lots of other choices that were A list...and besides....Deitrich and her husband never really lived together..

Apologies for up-jumping my guess on your post MM.
Francis Farmer. In college she won a trip to the soviet union and was suspected of being communist. Married to Leif Erickson, turned to the theater, had an affair with Odets. Quoting Wiki-"arranged with Paramount to stay in Los Angeles for three months out of every year to make motion pictures. The rest of her time she intended to use for theater." Tragic life after fits. Again, I apologize.

The whole time I read this I was thinking of Greta " I want to be alone" Garbo...So mysterious, also many sordid and scandalous relationships- but I do not believe she ever married.

Tricia is right, Garbo never married. Dietrich married Rudolf Sieber and had a daughter with him. Dietrich and Sieber went their separate ways but never divorced -- they were still married when he died.

@ Big Noise, oops, yeah,I was talking about Marlene Dietrich not Garbo

She didn't --- she had conversations with Reagan AND Gorbechev AND Mitterand into her 80s

WOW @ Snarknado, that is SO Wierd cuz I JUST LITERALLY watched FrancesFarmer in "The Toast Of New York" on TCM like a day ago with Cary Grant & was thinking how beautiful she was & what a tragic life she had.
If that's what happened as you say it fits perfectly sooo +1 for sure--only one thus far. good tea @ Snarknado! : )

Thanks Adam Evans and back again! Jumped it onto the first Dietrich guess hoping it would be seen. Dietrich guess took off like wildfire but like some mentioned, the tragic life clue didn't fit. Wonder if what happened to Francis had a component of government payback? Never thought about that until Enty posted this. Deepens her life story even more.
