Blind Item #5

This permanent A list singer who has not had a hit in decades is dying of alcohol poisoning. His celebrity wife doesn't really care except for the song rights he is supposedly bequeathing her in his will. You know, for the kids.

I like this guess. Obviously, there are alcohol issues. They have 3 kids. And he did not look or sound all that great last night.

The trouble is,she maybe a bigger drunk than he is. But it does fit in with something who has younger children, and valuable songwriting rights. I can't think of anyone else that fits.

chronic alcoholism, but not 'alcohol poisoning.' that's a whole different thing.

I think it's Paul Simon too. He's talking retirement and sounded bad last night. Billy Joel has cut back on booze and is still performing quite a bit, Rod Stewart still looks and sounds good and Eric Clapton just put out a record and still tours (and has been sober for a long time).

I have heard that Simon has been a real dick to people over the years and had that big fight with his wife a year ago so it would fit.

  14. He missed a few notes which happens if you're not protecting your voice by singing a lot. I groaned too because the song is so beautiful.

He looked his age. So do I.

  15. Clapton also more or less retired from touring. He has had health issues that prevent him from playing guitar recently.

And do song rights actually have much value anymore? Music making doesn't really earn money anymore. Unless an artist tours, there is no money coming anymore.

Sony paid 750 million last year for the 1/2 of Michael Jacksons catalogue they did not already own. And most of Jacksons songs were with co-writers, while Simon wrote most of S&G's, and his solo work, alone. I bet the value is easily a couple hundred million, given he's written some of the most popular songs of all time.

Big bucks for the writers from song placements in films, ads, & tv shows. You'd be surprised how much a golden oldie can bring you in a soundtrack or commercial. It's even more lucrative if you have all the publishing & performance rights.

The $$ in music comes from songwriting. The person who performs the song only gets paid either when (a) they go on tour, or (b) someone buys their album. When you hear Whitney Houston singing "And I will always love you" on the radio, the $$ goes into Dolly Parton's pocket (she wrote the song), not to Whitney's estate.

Not Billy Joel, his wife is not a celebrity, he's married to yet another gold digger, and they only have one kid (for now)
