This iconic A+ list movie actress who lived a very hidden life after leaving Hollywood mastered the art of not spending any of her own money. During almost her entire Hollywood run she charged/billed everything to whatever studio she was working for. Everything from mortgages to her utility bills. She would only eat at places that were willing to bill the studio for her meals. If the studio ever tried to deduct them from her salary she would threaten all kinds of nasty spillage of secrets.

I think the only other possible answer for this is Doris Day--she likes seclusion too, almost as much as Greta. Neither one of these could probably pull off their lifestyles successfully now and still be iconic stars.

Good for her. I remember reading that the studio people were brutal on Mauritz Stiller (the man who discovered her) and John Gilbert (the man who most famously loved her), and this was, perhaps, her act of revenge for how they were treated,
