This A list Olympian who is more known for his body than his body of talent got a big break back in the day in covering up his sexuality. He was busted having sex with another man but the officer wrote it up as a frat boy having fun.

The back in the day reference and more known for his body than his body of talent made me think of Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan in the 30s & 40s). He won gold medals in 1924 & 1928. He was married several times but that doesn't mean he never swam in a different lane.
Buster Crabbe (Flash Gordon serials) could also fit. He won gold in the 1932 Olympics.
Phelps has too impressive of a number of medals to be the subject of the blind. This has to be Lochte. He is a great swimmer, but he will live in Phelps's shadow
