Don't have a clear picture on retiring, as I figure I'll probably die in the first wave of an alien invasion, the first eruption of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, or when Skynet becomes fully self-aware and gets rid of us all: whichever comes first. Otherwise, probably 70.
I thought last year. But after Rachel Maddox sued me for what I wrote about her in the bathroom stall at the Henrietta Hudson, I had to change my plans.
I want to be like William Shutner, Barbara Walters, Morgan Freeman, etc Who work when they're 80, because they enjoy it. And because I work in my business, not for someone elese.
Strange you ask this question today, of all days. I retired 9 years ago TODAY! I was 66. Got my letter from Social Security in March telling me I was now old enough to get full social security! Worked two more months and then quit. Slept 20 hours a day for the first two years, Worked 48 straight years with no vacations. Ever. Whew!
Dianavonhthirstybird ... Wow. Just wow. Only in America can a person work for 48 years w/o a real vacation. I hope your enjoy every second of your retirement. You deserve rest and relaxation. Cheers to you on your retirement.
At retirement age. Even though I got lots of time, I attended a free SS seminar and it was an eye opener. You are never too young to go. I don't even know if the system will be available when my time comes up for benefits but save save save $.
In 6 years and 9 months I can quit working for other people and start working for myself, but I don't ever want to retire. I've seen far too many people who retired and then just sat around for the next 30 years waiting to die.
Glue: How very sweet of you to say this. So unexpected. If I told you what I have gone through in the last 9 years you would cry. My golden years have been anything but happy, I regret. In order to maintain a very, very low rent here in NYC, I must put up with dreadful people in a dreadful neighborhood. My bldg. has deteriorated to the point of caving in. My apt. is fine. The rest of the bldg. is a mess. That's why I spend my days on CDAN. The only happy thing I get to do! Keep praying for the lottery! Thanks again for your kindness.
58 is the plan. With investments, pension and the value of our home, my husband and I should be able to live comfortably and help out our children if needed. (Or grandchildren!). That means I still have 20 years left to work. Life is pretty good though. Work is alright. I can't complain.
Do you mind if I ask what you do when working for yourself? I'm just curious. I know people who have gone into business for themselves and it's so difficult. Best of luck to you.
I'll retire from a traditional 9 to 5 by 50, but I'll keep working at something until I die. I'll just have a lot more travel breaks. I've watched too many people I love postpone their dreams until retirement, only to be too ill to live out those dreams. Don't want to make the same mistake.

Working for me allows me to make time for fun, but all the research I work doing most of the time is tedious.

ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for 65, but I can get maximum CPP (Canada) benefits at age 70 so I guess I'll have to see how my personal RSP is doing at that time...
