This actress is A list. I would say until a few years ago she was A+ list. Mostly movies. Now, as she gets a little older, she might even be close to dropping down to the B's. It is not that she won't always be the top lead in whatever movie she stars in, because she will be. She is not a big fan of being a supporting actress, but maybe that is something she needs to look into. Our actress has kind of faded from the spotlight that she was basked in for years. Although she has been around a long time, her experience does not really reflect her age. She is not a big fan of discussing her personal life so she has been very good about hiding her growing substance abuse issues. Normally this would be quick blind perhaps, but with this actress any abuse is scary. First it was a glass of wine and then a bottle. Just once a week she said. Soon it was just once a week that she was not getting drunk. People who came into contact with her were shocked she was drinking and watching her get drunk before their eyes. They always thought she had stopped. Nope. Wine became pot because she told people that pot was not a real drug and it was about the same as wine, but with less calories. Of course since she usually ingested hers in brownies, I'm not sure about the calorie thing. This was not an overnight process. This was a years long process. Well, one day she was with some friends and buzzed on wine and pot and she did something she vowed she would never do and that was a line of coke. One became two which became staying up for three days straight doing coke like she never had before. She thought she could handle it. She couldn't. There was a very very silent trip to rehab and for 30 days she was gone. Since then, she has been less about work and more about life and as much as she would be celebrated for becoming sober again, she just won't talk about it.

Drew has tugged at my heartstrings since E.T. I find myself always wanting her to win.

ReplyDeleteShe was drinking and partying in clubs when she wasn't even a teenager yet. Everybody in her life has enabled her, starting with her 2 fucked up parents. She's supposed to be sober now but she drinks.

ReplyDeleteAnother Story: Told you about taking my 10 yr. old daughter out of the business in the mid-80s and why. Back to the audition in North Carolina with the world-famous director. He was on set of his film with Corey Haim (Silver Bullet). Saw my dtrs TV movie and flew her down. He wanted her to be Corey's girlfriend in the film. Met her and was shocked she was so young. She looked so much older on screen. On the way to the airport the chauffeur asked me if I really wanted my kid to be in show biz. Told him, not really. He said, "Ma'am, don't want to impose myself into your life but we recently had Drew Barrymore down here filming Fire Starter. This kid was reeking of gin! She's a kid! He said her mother was a total nightmare and he wondered what kind of life Drew was going to have. Well, we know the outcome by now. He said Corey Haim had the potential to do big things because he was not only a handsome kid, but had talent, too. Had mommy problems. Totally spoiled. We know how that turned out. So glad I took her out the business three months later!

ReplyDeleteThe thing with addicts is their brains get re-wired, even if they haven't used for years, if they start again thinking they can handle just a drink, just a puff it doesn't stop there. She probably feels like she would be admitting failure if she were public about it.
ReplyDeleteShe & Ericka Elainiack both lived with David Crosby as a throuple, when they were both Jr High age. Ever since I learned that i can't stand that man, or listen to his music, change the station.
She doesn't have to talk about it, she doesn't owe anyone her story. I'll always be a fan.

ReplyDeleteKeep trying Drew. Don't give up on sobriety. It is not unusual for addicts/alcoholics to have many false starts before putting together a long stretch of sobriety.
ReplyDeleteBoo, although it sounds like you did what you thought was right for your daughter, I must say I see a huge difference with her potential story and that's you. Drew and Corey admittedly had mothers her were a hot mess. Even if you allowed your daughter to pursue a career in entertainment, I have a feeling you wouldn't be having any of those reindeer games being played with your kid.
