Blind Item #11

The night always sounds amazing and he prizes being bid on are phenomenal. The problem for the charity is that well over half of the people bidding, never pay up. They like to look important and rich and that they can afford to bid $1M on something. The thing is though, they never usually write a check or if they do, it bounces. The charity, run by an A+ list mostly movie actor doesn't seem to care though because he likes the buzz of being the host.

  6. Penn? God what the F is wrong with this man? Agro angry abusive rep with the press and women for years. Smells like cigarettes and has a leather gross face. Supposedly indulges all kinds of nefarious behavior, illegal, etc, under the guise of being a considerate, compassionate, philanthropy minded liberal. I officially hate Hollywood. Is there a single person who hasn't sold their soul to the devil when you hear blinds about Jennifer Lawrence, George Clooney, etc etc?

  10. Environmental charities are usually the biggest scams. Who's going to rat them out, the trees, the squirrels or the fish?

  11. @Brayson87

Some are, some aren't, but the loudest environmental charities are most often the ones who do that least.

If the charity is buying up land and putting it under easement or conservancy, or raising money for a local clean up, as a general rule it's a better one.

But if it's one of those fako "Awareness" charities, well, those are scams across the board.

LDF (Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation) was started back in 1998, if I remember correctly. Pretty much right after Titanic. It was around that time that Leo turned into a shady, phony, self-important Hollyweirdo. But maybe they've only been doing these 'auctions' for a couple of years, Idk.

Anyway, I've read the articles on Page Six and DM and something doesn't add up imo. I'm afraid there's much more to this story than the foundation/Leo just not giving af. But I'm not sure I wanna know the whole story. As much as I dislike the person that Leo has become, I still have a soft spot for him.

  16. Almost all foundations started by one individual or family are vehicles for agendas other than the named cause. They are great ways to cloak activity, do phony PR, pay people off, launder money and avoid taxes- usually legally. The laws are generous in this area - 'to help the world' lol.

  17. What a waste of time for all involved.

  18. Not so fast, Southern Man. A lot of family charities are committed to the environment. One I know is saving swaths of natural and farm land from development in the Shenandoah Valley. They aren't big. No one has heard about them. But they are doing good work.

Ted Turner has done the same all over the West (and FLA, too), one person whose foundation does something very good.

The MacArthur Grants and Fellowships are a family foundation that doesn't seem to have any agenda or do any phony PR or set up to avoid taxes.

Even the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, though often wrong headed and arrogant, isn't a money laundering organization or a tax break. In fact, Bill wants to pay more taxes.

I don't think your parameters are especially good there.

  19. @Plot: 1. I didn't say all 2. You're assuming what you see/hear publicly is what's really going on. Check out the clinton foundation for example 3. You don't understand the full financial and tax implications and benefits, for example w Gates. Gates is also experimenting on human guinea pigs in africa.

Sure, I know some do some good in some ways. But that is not the total picture.

  20. @Southern Man

Sounds like the only charity you've ever looked into is the Clinton Foundation, in which case your assumptions about all other charities are mistaken.

I do happen to know about the tax benefits of donations and charities. Gates has said that despite his tax exemptions he should pay more taxes. Are you saying he never said this?

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is extremely arrogant and short sighted, which I admitted before.

  21. @plot "The goalpost bandit"

    1. @southernman didn't say "all". He said "almost all". Plot misconstrues/southernman reaffirms his uncontested statement

    +1 southernman

    -----------------
@plot "Gates has said that despite his tax exemptions he should pay more taxes. Are you saying he never said this?"

@Southernman never denied Gates said he wants to pay more taxes, @plot still haven't responded to his statement that @plot is taking PR on face value

    +1 @southernman

    --------------
@southernman "Gates is also experimenting on human guinea pigs in africa. "

@Plot "The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is extremely arrogant and short sighted, which I admitted before"

    Plot doesn't address medical experimentation +1 @southernman

@Plot tries to deflect by claiming they pre-empted the argument, actually misquotes previous statement:

@Plot "though often wrong headed and arrogant"

    -1 @plot
