Blind Items Revealed #5

February 28, 2018

Apparently the transformation of this former A list mostly television actor to superhero is going poorly. The results have been awful and the studio is worried that as it stands now, the movie will be a huge box office bomb.

  5. @Geeljire, after "Ready Player One," Spielberg will need something to make people take him seriously again. Maybe then.

  6. Ant man made $519 million, not a bomb

  7. Who put the curse on DC?

They should have thrown that money down on a live action Teen Titans movie not an almost tv show.

  10. @sandybrook, Antman was a movie that had a budget of $142 million and it's box office made $519.3 million. I would say that 'bombed' is not the right word.

  11. Zach Levi was Chuck on "Chuck".

  12. Ant man was a better movie than it had any right to be.

What were they thinking casting Levi as Captain Marvel? Not only have his television shows struggled in the ratings, he is also miscast. Maybe they can pull a Back to the Future and recast his role (if the studio is willing to shut down for a few weeks).

  14. @sandybrook ant man grossed $519 worldwide, very far from a bomb.

  15. They've only been filming a few weeks. How can they even know when it's not even complete. And the rumours were the same for Wonder Woman.

  16. Zach Levi was the lead character on the TV spy-comedy series "Chuck" I loved that show, but I don't see Zach as a Superhero.Him and Yvonne Strahovski were great together. She is now in The Handmaid's Tale as Serena Joy (love her). He was in the Heroes Reborn (the reboot). He also played Fandral in Thor:The Dark World But, Josh Dallas from Once Upon a Time was the original actor to play him in Thor, wasn't available for the sequel.

  17. @ Chuck Fan - Brie Larson is Captain Marvel.

Zachary Levi was part of the MCU in Thor2 and Thor3 as one of the Warriors Three (Fandral)..

  18. Levi is doing well on Broadway these days. He should stick to it, this movie looks terrible.

  19. The character was originally known as Captain Marvel but DC can't use that name in titles due to Marvel comics. Shazam is really the name of the wizard that gives him his powers.

@Sagan Yeah I meant Shazam (which Levi referred to as the original Captain Marvel).

  22. Yep, it looks pretty bad. Costumes and casting don't make a film, but they do help. I'm guessing the script isn't going to save it, although I hope I'm wrong. DC has so much potential.

  23. Long story short for those who don't follow comics....the characters name is Captain Marvel...aka the "Big Red Cheese". DC bought the character off another company. They did not remember to re-up their trademark rights. Marvel created THEIR Captain Marvel (the guy not the woman) noticed trademark was available and took it. Since they have the trademark rights for the name in regards to any properties involving a character named "Captain Marvel" DC can't advertise Captain Marvel DC by his actual name anymore....thus SHAZAM the word he uses to transform being used. OH and its not just the wizard's name....
    S----the wisdom of Solomon
    H---- the strength of Hercules
    A----the stamina of Atlas
    Z----the power of Zues
    A----the courage of Achilles
    M----the speed of Mercury

what the word represents often changes (Mary Marvel and Black Adam have different deities/heroes) but that is one of its conceits(other words have been used with the same idea)

And how did I somehow do a comic lecture on a gossip site I'll never know....I feel like I got my peanut butter in my jelly or something.

  24. The character was always high-camp, silly, and stupid, what are they thinking ?

  25. I loved Chuck and for me he will forever be Chuck or a Flynn Rider type character. I wouldn't think of spending money on this movie.

  26. Ant Man did NOT bomb.

  27. I live near Zach in Austin and see him every once in a while at Walgreens or around. Super sad because he is genuinely nice.

  28. This character needed someone like The Rock. The whole point is this kid in this OTT big superhero body.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Isn't The Rock playing Black Adam in this? That makes that sooo much funnier.

  30. Since there are some comments above about box office vs. production budget - generally speaking, a movie breaks even after earning (my rough estimations just from following lots of info online) about/at least 2.5x the production budget. Give or take depending on the movie. (I'm sure ratios are different for tentpole movies vs. indie movies.) Prints and advertising budgets tend to be quite large - often times more than the production budget itself (again, depending on the movie). Theater rental fees also come out of the box office revenues - they don't go to the studio. So a blockbuster that cost $300M to make will break-even around $800M in revenue. Many films don't break-even until the home market phase. I think Antman made a profit, but not hundreds of millions. A movie that cost $100M to make but earned $200M at the box office is generally still in the red.

  31. This is why DC should give all of the franchises over to the Nolan brothers

  32. Ok I heard AntMan was a bomb, sorry about that. Maybe compared to the other comic movies it's considered a bomb. I also heard it was awful, but I'm not one to ask about comic movies because I think they are mostly, but not all, awful.

  33. For funsies I did some math on that....using lowball and a highball estimate Ant-Man would've likely been making anywhere from about 90 mill to about 200 mill profit.

Lowball(90 mill) number comes from the 142 mill to production budget earlier in the thread x 3 minus the total box office according to Box Office Mojo (foreign & domestic).

Highball(200 Mill) is the Box Office Mojo budget number of 130 mill x2 minus the Total Box Office.

In both cases I obviously change the resulting negative to a positive number.

  34. Bad bad blind, the movie has only just started filming.

  35. Ever since pictures of him on set appeared in early March and it's obvious how padded the costume is, I've been asking myself whether they always intended to have that much padding or if they were forced to because the actor didn't bulk up enough.
