Blind Item #10 - Reader Blind

This is entirely random and on the d/l, but since it involves that most public of public figures I thought I'd share. Can you imagine how strange and surreal it would be to wake up in the morning and find yourself the subject of one of his 3am hate tweets?

This just happened to someone I know (though haven't seen in a while). In her capacity as one of the most high profile of these, she has in the current era become a lightning rod for both sides. Not a week goes by when that Philadelphia-based blogger doesn't diss her - men, in particular, are basically obsessed with this person (in a sort of analogous way to that A++ list female politician). Of course, because it's him who is hating on her, DK has a sympathetic front page post. This all switches from day to day, basically.

Anyhow, back in the day (are the 90s back in the day yet?), she and I were in a fiction writing class with a certain out gay novelist who didn't much like teaching, and was known to the young men of the class for sometimes sleeping with them, and his voluminous porn collection.

I wrote this story about being a barely legal hustler in San Francisco called "the Tenderloin's Edge." It wasn't very good (largely because it wanted to be told for what it was - a true rather than fictional story). But she was the only person in the class who got what I was trying to do, and asked me questions about the experience behind it afterward. That's how we got to know each other. It's funny because she was practically a magician when it came to making people feel comfortable about answering questions/sharing. She'd go on to make a living doing that.

And she was right: I should write it in her preferred medium, non-fiction. I'm trying to get on that long running radio show - the one with the themed episodes on the not-for-profit stations - to tell this story.

When she won the Pulitzer, her son, who’s about 10, posted a congratulatory/proud message on twitter and promptly got attacked (the child!) by trolls from both ends of the spectrum.
It’s sad - he’s a cute kid, too. And very bright.

  6. Dear Reader-Author,

I have no idea about anything but my guess is you want to be interviewed on NPR. I pray all your dreams come true. God bless you.

  7. Super interesting blind. Partisan hack journalist doesn't like being attacked herself, also one time took a writing class with another partisan (non-hack) journalist. Wants to be on famous radio show.

Also, men are obsessed with and mean to Hilldawg.

    Ground breaking.

  8. Guessing:

    Teacher: Allan Gurganus
Journalist: Maggie Haberman - DailyKos has a feature called "front page", and there was a piece about her this morning. Trump tweeted about her earlier this morning as well.

Holy $hit! Gurganus is gay?! I went to a church a relative of his pastored. It was time for me to move on but the relative is one of the good ones, not a fake Christian.

Trump fired off a tweet about her early this morning

She went to Sarah Lawrence, but not too sure of the writer.

  11. Shit like this is why Trump won.

  12. Didn’t the dancing boy go to Sarah Lawrence ?

  13. Wikileaks also this morning tweeted a TRUTH-TWEET laying out evidence of Maggie's lap-dog status with the Clintons...

  14. @Adrian - he never taught at Sarah Lawrence. Gurganus was the first openly gay writer to be published in The New Yorker.

Misread that part big time, my bad!

  16. Great blind! And how ironic that Trump hate-tweets at her when he's called her asking for interviews several times because he respects her work and her status in the journalism world. And misspells her name while he's at it. Good Lord.

  17. Maggie is owned by Donald Trump...not HRC. Also, Trump usually says the opposite of what is true. Thus, this mornings tweet re Maggie.

"Didn’t the dancing boy go to Sarah Lawrence ?"

Yes. Same year, same story. This blind is from DB.

  19. I'm guessing the new blind is about Aimless Spectator and their Keurig!

And I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess Kroger as the grocery store. It's certainly not Whole Foods.

  20. Haberman was owned by Clintons when they were in power, she's own by Trump now. She's a mockingbird journalist. Writes about some small stuff that's bad to keep the plebs occupied and confused, but is far more propagandist than journalist. She's really not worth thinking about or paying attention to. DK was once effectively pretended to be a legit progressive hangout but now its for puppets, pawns and the brainwashed only. Markos just one of thousands of disappointments in my life.

  23. @T. W. Ayup. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Gurganus.

Relevant excerpt: Cheever sold Gurganus's short story "Minor Heroism" to The New Yorker without telling Gurganus beforehand.[2] It was the first story The New Yorker had ever published about a homosexual character (the magazine's founder Harold Ross had instructed his staff that there was no such thing as a homosexual).[1] Gurganus himself is a gay man.[2]

My dad was a pastor. He actually counseled several families during the late 70s where the father realized he was gay and that pretending wasn't working. And by "counseled" I mean actually HELPED and listened. All of those divorces were amicable as a result, with co-parenting and everything, and Dad providing references for the kids to get help dealing with bullies and whatnot as well.

  24. I love This American Life. I could listen to Ira Glass all day.

  25. @Sara - I'm wondering if the show is not The Moth. People tell real-life stories, and this is the kind of material that gets on there all the time.

  26. As badly written as this blind is, I shudder to think what the rest of this person's writing must be like.

  27. Good luck telling your story. Do you think maybe Maggie knew your story was not fiction because she’s intimately familiar with such stories? Are you aware of her complicity in Clinton campaign propaganda? She was their fake journalist. She ruined her reputation as any kind of real journalist with the release of the Wikileaks emails. Deserves what she’s getting now,

This screams Ann Rule to me.

  37. Didn't take long for that Tweet to get nuked.

    ReplyDelete
  38. "DK" screams Daily Kos to me too, but then who is "that Philadelphia-based blogger"? Markos is west coast based and I think the actual Kos offices are in NYC. Not Philly based in any way.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Katie Tur. Trump is obsessed with her though less lately. He has both insulted and praised her at various times and always points her out if she is in the room. He obviously has a huge crush on her and is pissed he told to too much on the campaign trail.

Show at the end is The Moth on NPR.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Wikileaks also this morning tweeted a TRUTH-TWEET"

Truth needs to be in quotation marks if Wikileaks claims it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I used to donate to our local NPR, but can't do it anymore because of shit like this.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Shit like what?

I'm normally obtuse but I don't see much "shit" going down here.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Plot: I always got the vibe that Trump hates Katy Tur because her father is a trans woman. But I'll bet you're right. She followed him on his campaign and then wrote a negative book about what she saw. If she was charming to his face (which Trump would interpret as "she's hot for me"), then "stabbed him in the back", that would make him want to destroy her.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yep! All of that, just sayin'

Trump really liked her and flirted with her when she was traveling with his campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  45. "...her father is a trans woman." ErrRRrr, WUT?

    ReplyDelete
  46. A man who was born a woman and transitions to female is a trans woman. He is her parent, so I assume that Katy Tur refers to Zoey as her father, just as the Jenner kids do with Caitlyn.
