ReplyDeleteCardinal Roger Mahoney succeeded in keeping a lid on it for decades, until the nationwide scandals broke. Much of LA's downtown political, journalistic and business establishment was at least complicit in perpetuating the abuse.
While I know that a number of prominent industry people participated in nxivm, I don't believe it has a facility in SoCal.
I don't recall ever hearing much about scientology-related child sexual abuse in LA. There are plenty of other stories of immoral, unethical, tortious and criminal misbehavior, just not that particular crime.
The pedo stuff has yet to come out from Scientology, but it's there. I agree with the Catholic Church having the worst record of child sexual abuse, but they tend to keep that at the upper levels of the clergy and the parishioners are not involved or typically aware. In some of these other "religions" it tends to be pervasive among the members too.

"Religious officials" implies a local church organization large enough to have officials -- and in this case, enough of them to provide a lucrative source of cheese pizza customers. Not some small cult. Also, the homosexual priest molestation scandal in the Catholic Church touched very few above the level of parish priest. Mahoney, as one of the most powerful American bishops, was likely part of the reason for that. Common sense says there's still a lot of creeps in his org tree.

The priest who baptized my daughter had a "relationship" with a 12 year old boy. I know they paid that family off and just moved father P. To another church. Thankfully, because of the heat from the press, he is no longer a priest- though he isn't in jail. Lots of shady dealings in the church- including priests who befriend older parishioners and get them to leave money for them in their will. Father P drove around in a convertible and wore a toupee. I lost faith in the organization used church years ago. Now I just try to be a good person and pray to God on my own. Much more fulfilling.
