Your Turn

You visit your friends or family at heir place for several days. On your last night in town, do you eat in or take them out?

  1. Go out. I'll take any chance I can not to cook!

  2. You take them out. Or you cook up something delicious. Easier to go out.

  4. Oh hell no, get a hotel room every time. I don't need to put up with any weird household schedules or routines or low flow shower heads.

  6. Take everyone out to eat. If your host/hostess doesn't feel like going out, ask if they have a favorite restaurant and if they'd like you to go and pick up food to bring back home.

If they still flake on you, "no, save your money," "it's okay, really," etc. and are pretty adamant about it, don't make it difficult for them. Instead, once you get home, send a thank you card and a gift card for a restaurant (or a pre-paid Visa/MC) with a little note to 'enjoy yourselves the way I enjoyed being with you!' inside.

PS: Although no one asked, recently I traveled out of state following a sudden death, to the decedent's family/hometown. We all say "if there's anything I can do, let me know". No one can think of what they want done, when they really want to just crawl in a dark hole and hide (or drink, or or or).. I took it upon myself to take the father and brothers' dress shoes out back and give them a good polish for them. That afternoon, another friend and I took their 2 cars to a car wash then filled up their gas tanks. Your thoughtfulness will go along way, even if the recipient never knows it was you.

    :)

  8. You should always take your hosts out to eat at least once while you are staying there. It's only good manners.

  11. Stay in and treat everyone to take out so you’re not wasting your last bit of visit driving

  12. Stay in, for sure.
We go out the first night in town, because jet lag is real.
Decide the options are "meh" and enjoy the fact that none of us are "meh" in the kitchen.
    :)
Plus, it's difficult to wrangle so many littles in a public setting.

I like to cook though, so I wouldn’t mind cooking a good meal and staying in.

  17. I try very very hard never to stay with anyone. If I do have to, then I take care of the meal the last night, and majority rules. If most folks want to go out, we go. If not, I go to the nearest market and pick up whatever looks good at the time and I cook there.

  20. Go to Publix or some really nice grocery store. Get a mix of pre-made options from the deli and other items that you will have to prepare and cook. Get several bottles of wine and beer. Make dinner and/or brunch for them. If you don't know what to buy, ask them about meals they've always wanted to eat but it was too expensive. Sometimes your idea of expensive and theirs can be different.

  21. Take them out.. Especially if they've shown so much love and hospitality. That's the least I can do.
