Blind Item #15 - Reader Blind Item - Kindness

This occurred on the set of a science fiction themed TV show decades ago.  The show only lasted a couple of seasons but did become a cult show in syndication and was briefly rebooted a few decades later.  The lead actor , who is still alive, was tall and handsome and should have probably been a bigger success than he was.  Most of the other TV series he was in didn’t make it past the first season.  His two other greatest successes were in soap operas both daytime and night and in several appearances in an important role on this much more successful sci-fi show that took a cue from his original cult show.  He also starred in both cinematic and TV movies primarily in supporting roles.

This particular day on the set there was a chase scene being shot in an outdoor market which was covered by a tent.  It was supposed to be midday so the tent was full of extras.  A fire broke out during the shoot and quickly spread via the tent.  The lead actor ran through the fire and tore a hole so all the people could escape.  He himself did not leave until everyone else was already out.  His jacket caught fire but he took it off quickly and he was not burned.  This is mentioned briefly in a documentary about the series.

  2. RIchard Hatch of the original Battlestar Galactica?

He was in Dynasty (night soap) and Santa Barbara (day soap) and also did movies and tv

  3. Gaul, I immediately thought of Battlestar Galactica as well and I was trying to see if it fit so +1

  4. Hatch also did All My Children very early in his career.

  5. I like the Richard Hatch guess, but the original Galactica was only a single season.

  6. Oops can't be Richard Hatch because he passed away last year

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah, but Richard Hatch is dead and the blind says that the actor is still alive.

    ReplyDelete
  8. David Hedison did Another World and The Colbys

  9. Hatch is deceased though.

  10. This seems to fits Richard Hatch except the fact that he's dead. If you count Galactica 1980, then the original Battlestar Galactica did run for two seasons.

"several appearances in an important role on this much more successful sci-fi show that took a cue from his original cult show" Hatch as Tom Zarek from the Galactica reboot.

  11. Young and the Restless not Another World my bad.

  12. Was Voyage to the bottom rebooted?

    ReplyDelete
  13. @gauloise not to my knowledge. Voyage was originally a movie that was soon turned into a tv series.

  14. The second show wasn't a reboot, but had a similar idea to the first one. And it was more successful.

  15. Lost in Space of the 1960s, Mark Goddard.

the show was Remade, he is still alive and was in General Hospital, The Doctors and One life to live.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @sandy but it said it was rebooted decades later. But he does fit otherwise.

  17. Does Mark Goddard have a night time soap? Off to imdb.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't think he made appearances in a more successful sci-fi show, so strike him out.

I feel like this one should be able to be figure out!

  19. Can't find him in a nighttime soap, besides that he also fits.

  20. Maybe Judson Scott from V?

    1. Tall (6'3")
      Recent reboot
      Colbys & OLTL soaps
Guest starred on several episodes of X-Files (is that reaching a bit to say they took a cue from V?)

    2. Although V only ran one season, not a couple, so this may not be it.

  21. @Sara, great guess, he was also in Star Trek Voyager & Next Gen.

He certainly fits all the clues!

  22. Marc singer - v

  23. Or john wesley shipp- the flash..... but tht didnt seem like a show with a cult following

  24. Patrick Duffy fits pretty well but he also had a hit comedy (Step by Step) so maybe too successful for this blind.

    Sci-FI - Man from Atlantis
    Nighttime Soap Success - Dallas
Daytime Soap Success - The Bold and the Beautiful

  25. I think this is Mark Goddard. He was on The Doctors and General Hospital. Lots of 1 year TV series on his IMDB. I'm not finding the nighttime soap, though.

  27. Roy Thinnes? The Invaders (2 seasons)
    reboot:a 1995 miniseries (mini=brief!)
    soaps: general hospital/knots landings
    more successful/similiar show: xfiles

  28. +1 Mhb
Roy Thinnes, Falcon Crest nighttime soap

  29. thanks brayson, yup it was falcon crest i meant

  30. Nathan Fillion.
He was on Firefly, One Life To Live and a tonne of bit roles on big shows. @ Guys a Girl & a Pizza Place, Modern Family... He was in Saving Private Ryan but eventually scored Castle and now The Rookie...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Firefly was barely one season, damn you Fox :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was a great find Mhb, those two scifi shows have a lot of similarities.

  33. Dean Stockwell from Quantum leap. It has a cult following and he appeared on a couple of daytime shows and TV movies. Then appeared on Battlestar Gallactica which could be the more successful sci-fi show.

    1. Hey I do remember seeing him in tv movies quite a bit..great guess

  34. @sandy I believe David Hedison DID do AW too, later on in his career?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mark Goddard wasn't the 'lead actor' on LIS, was he? So I think not him.

    ReplyDelete

  36. The blind says it is "sci fi themed" as opposed to "sci fi" so maybe it could be one of those anthology type shows like Outer Limits that were revived in the 90s.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I loved Richard Hatch when he was on AMC. Looking at pictures of him when he was young....he was sizzlin'!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think this might be Marc Singer from V. Between the mini-series and regular show, V was around maybe three seasons. The show was later rebooted. He did lots of TV work including season long spots in Dallas and TY&TR.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dean Stockwell was a famous child star in the 40s, who transitioned into adult roles, I am sure the blind would have mentioned that. This sounds like someone who never broke through.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Best blind in a while. Marc Singer seems to fit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shatner. Leonard nimoy talks about it and Shatner tries to downplay it saying "all I was thinking is I have to film tj hooker in 6 hours"

    ReplyDelete

    1. If this is supposed to be Shatner, then the writer here did their best to throw us off on purpose, because I would never describe him as he was described here. So much to the point that if he was in an incident as described in this blind, I would think it's a coincidence.

  42. Spencer Milligan on "Land of the Lost" (and later on "General Hospital") was the first person who came to mind. But then I saw his virtually nonexistent IMDb resume and figured Entoid's clues couldn't possibly be that off.

    Replies
    1. Land of the Lost was the first one I looked at because I remember a reboot. But I can't imagine an episode that would feature a chase scene through a tented outdoor market.

  43. Was also thinking Gil Gerard but I don't think Buck Rogers got a later reboot.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dean Stockwell very big child star back in the day. Not really tall, handsome. Lived quite the bohemian life in Hollyweird. Still alive.(You can thank my obsession with TCM for this info.)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Gil Or Mark Goddard.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I hope this is Nathan Fillion. Geeze, I miss Firefly. Most of the cast is now available to do a reboot except Nathan. Ugh......Fox blew it by losing this show.

At first I thought it may be Adam Baldwin, but he hasn't been in too many movies or TV shows.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nathan. Super guy.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Sara, Making It Work

Nope. But then I couldn't remember an episode of "The Invaders" that had one, either.

Also, Roy Thinnes (who this clearly is supposed to be) is not tall.

I'm a newbie here, but wanted to take a guess.

This has Ben Browder of Farscape written all over it,
until you consider the decades between reboot
(only 2 years), and lack of a daytime soap credit.
    Thought I had one there!

    ReplyDelete
  50. These are all great guesses. Wow...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I guess Marc Singer wss the lead on V, so it fits better than my original guess. I had forgotten the "lead" element of the blind.
But I don't know what the "much more successful sci-fi show that took a cue from his original cult show" would be. He's been on "Arrow" but that doesn't make sense. But then again I've never watched it.
Also it seems like his biggest claim to fame (What his fans know him from) is the Beastmaster franchise, movies and TV. I'd think it would be mentioned here. But then it is a reader blind, so Enty rules do not necessarily apply. 🙂

Congrats, reader, I think you've stumped us!

  52. Van Williams, Green Hornet

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think that this is Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) although Enty may have mentioned Golden Globe winner.

    ReplyDelete
  54. One good thing about these reader blinds is it got me googling forgotten sci-fi shows and I found one I have been trying to figure out the name of *forever*. I know know that it was called "Otherworld". I loved that show in the 80s.
