Don't believe the hype. That wasn't this one named street artist hanging out in the back of an auction. It was a double. Well, not really a double because if it was a double, then it would have to look like this foreign born three named actor. So, more of a stand in really.

DeleteBansky represents the old left wing social awareness type. The debate is between Robert del Naja (massive attack singer and artist) or Gunningham. Perhaps enty meant del Naja, it is a three named artist who also made films.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to say Banksy has jumped the shark but this latest gimmick was definitely legit--possible commentary on how much his own work is garbage? Or how the art gallery biz has turned into a vehicle for money laundering? That patrons are idiots?

In EVERY age the art is mostly shit. In retrospect, we are just seeing the crème de la crème of all the different types and epochs. Sure, there are clusters of great artists (this is talked about in the excellent Quebec film The Barbarian Invasions) in eras like The Renaissance or during the Impressionist phase. But even then there were a larger number of mediocre or just plain bad artists as well that are forgotten.
We now see the best of every era in the past while living in the cacophony of expressions of the present, which has ALWAYS be the case.
Banksy's stunt was spectacular. I hadn't paid any attention to him before, but this was genius and hilarious. Although the purchaser should get their money back if they want.

ReplyDeletePlot-kun, the difference is that in the Renaissance most artists had to follow a specific technique that they were taught by their masters. You didn't just pick up a paintbrush and a canvas because that stuff was expensive back then. Canvases had to be reused many times so there's a lot of lost art we'll never see because it was painted over. There wasn't a huge amount of room for individuality. You can tell a Raphael from a Michelangelo. But they are pretty much painting the same sorts of things. a great deal of it was religious iconography and portraits of rich people and royalty. And you sure as hell better paint those richies and royals looking as attractive as possible if you want to get paid and keep your reputation. If that duchess has a wart on her nose then you better not let future generations find out by painting it.
Now there's less direction and people do what they want. Although they still follow trends. Like hideous Tumblr style art and bad anatomy ridden anime style.
My husband is an artist, and I actually Love Banksy, We have a piece of his artwork, well a copy of a piece of his artwork on our wall. It is our favorite style. Loving my new city artworks, we now have the worlds largest 3D mural just a block from my home and its amazing! I also loved this gimmick. Though I still believe that the real art is still in the frame, and another copy piece was put in front to shred, to show his point that art should be free.

ReplyDeleteAmateurish stunt--the K Foundation (KLF) did it better in the 90s when they stapled 1 million pounds in cash to a board and sold it for $500,000. They also filmed themselves burning a million pounds. Let's see Banksy do that.

ReplyDeleteThat is all true, but there was still a wide range of styles even in the Renaissance, especially comparing country to country or even region to region.
There were less supported artists then, as far as we know, but there were also less people and shorter lives. We don't know much about the folk art or the lesser artists. There might be a portrait in a castle done by some unknown artist of the time, but he was forgotten. So are the artists of many alters and churches. I've seen lots of those over in Europe. At the time, if all one knew was those inferior artists, one might also say that art is mostly shit, just like J does about this age.
People might be doing what they want these days, as you say, or they might be just as programmed as the painters of the Renaissance without even knowing it. Maybe it isn't patrons who are prescribing the limitations but our culture itself in it's media forms. Also, film has taken over a huge portion of the visual arts medium and artists have to wrestle with that, one way or another which can render their art meaningless or poignant, but they still have to address it.

I don't think the buyer will be asking for a refund, Bansky just doubled it's price with tha stunt. As for art and garbage my favourite quote comes from Andy Warhol...... 'Art is what you can get away with'
