Today's Blind Items - Lawless

I'm not sure if I can find it, but shortly after I started the site, I wrote about a singer who owned a trailer park and each trailer was being used as a grow site for pot. Considering the person I am writing about today is also a singer, this time of a permanent A list group who is in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, perhaps he knew the other person. This not just using trailers to grow. It is in Northern California. It is close to the coast to avoid any chance, or at least reduce the chance of being consumed by fire. It is 20 minutes from any kind of major road, and 30-45 from any kind of major town with a grocery store. It is perfect for the people who live there because none of them are up to any good. The singer doesn't like to talk about it because all he does is collect the rent, and a little taste. The way things work in California in these types of communities is you pay for a space. That's it. The landlord has no other obligations. Because the rents in an out of the way place like that are low, around $200 they are usually paid in cash. Often the case is that someone who is not afraid of violence is the one who collects the rent from each site. Often, they will live for free and take a cut of what they collect to make sure enforcement efforts are strong.

This little outpost of about 150 sites makes the singer a nice little steady income. Unlike many other owners, he reports all of the rental income he receives. What he doesn't report is the percentage he receives from the various enterprises going on at the sites. There is meth, but apparently only one person who is experienced at cooking it is allowed. There are a couple that are used as fencing locations and another couple that are safe houses for motorcycle gang members. There is one that is a strip club which is next door to one used as a brothel. It is amazing the kind of illicit businesses you can put into a double wide. Because it is so far from a grocery, there is a grocery store in one that charges normal prices because of a beating that occurred when it first opened with prices commensurate with being out in the middle of nowhere. The singer doesn't like to talk about any of it, but generates enough from his percentage that it exceeds royalties he receives from several of the band's records. You know, I titled this Lawless, but that is one thing that is crazy about the place. Sure, there are fistfights and there is one trailer that is used as a bar, but the rule is only fists. No feet and no weapons in a fight. There really is no violence because they don't want the police to show up for anything.

If Joe Walsh was a singer I would have said him but ya know. Joe Walsh is definitely messed up off the drugs

    5. Joe Walsh is clean and sober and counsels other musicians as to how he maintains it.

  4. He doesn't spend money on nice clothes either, I think he wore the exact same shit in the 70s and 80s.

  10. Henley is too legit rich to risk jail for drug money. Its conceivable Walsh might need the money. Frey is dead, which kind of rules him out.

    1. Glenn Frey is dead? I missed that.

  11. Frey family and henley make the most from royalties. That’s why Felder sued them and was kicked out because he complained. Joe Walsh is a good guess because he was probably screwed over.

    2. No it’s in the lawsuit. Frey and Henley came to him before the concert and said sign papers that basically made him an employee of them. He refused and they fired him.

  13. Joe Walsh sings and wrote songs, but his function in the Eagles was guitar player and that is what he is known for--he's a singer in the same way Keith Richards is, in other words, he isn't a singer...

  15. Joe Walsh was in James Gang (Funk 49 and Rockey Mountain Way) before he as in The Eagles. After the Eagles he went solo and has several hits including Life's Been Good.

  21. FINALLY!
A Hollywood Celebrity who knows how to make money through (passive investment) renting real estate!

Now, if only more celebrities would learn this trick!
    (Hint! I can help!)

Sure, the legality of the activities is in question.
But, as long as the Owner/Landlord stays more than an arms length away, his liability is minimum.
(Now, this doesn't mean the Police won't take his property if any of the tenants get busted.)
He's smart to NOT be directly involved.

  24. Key issue here is who would make more money off this enterprise than their royalty checks? Neil Young? Don't think so, he owns too much of his own music which is covered constantly by others. Joe Walsh isn't a bad guess but he is actively sober now. Crosby? Stills? Nash? Henley makes too much off royalties as well. Who else?

  27. Man, I want to buy into this shit. Visit quarterly. Love the seedy bullshit that does not involve pedo's. Really why should any food source take advantage of the neighborhood? They deserved the beat down. One for all, all for one here it seems. A good concept that does not have to be centered around illicit activities.

  30. Off-topic, but the description of this trailer park being in desolate Northern CA where the residents are always "up to no good" brought the Keddie Resort in Plumas County to mind. It was a super low-rent joint where some atrocious murders took place in the 80s, and the corrupt local po-po's let the murderers walk scot-free. Anyone know of who runs that place currently? Is it still standing? I could see that place being ripe for meth manufacturing.

  31. @Tricia13: please do not EVER AGAIN make fun of someone with Autism. Insulting Darryl about the way she dresses is over the top. I have a nephew who was recently diagnosed with Autism & it’s been very difficult for both his parents as well as our entire family. For whatever reason, he chooses to dress in shorts and a t-shirt every day (even in the winter and they live in the Northeast.)

I generally enjoy your comments and your sense of humor, but as a mother, you should know better than to insult someone like this. Please remove your post and/or apologize, as you are totally out of line.
    Thank you, AG

Kind of hard to pin this on anyone, because the blind doesn't state that the singer is from Northern CA, just that he owns land there. The only clue is that he's in a band that's in the RNR Hall Of Fame, so that could be Young, Hagar, Bob Weir, Gregg Rolie from Santana and Journey, there's not enough to work with here. Could be John Fogerty. There's a lot of bands in the Hall Of Fame, with singers.

Just find a 150 space trailer park in a remote part of Northern CA along the coast (Start around Morrow Bay, "NorCal" informally starts around there), and call the assessor's office in that county to find out who owns it. Probably owned by an LLC of the singer, but hey, if you're gonna stal...investigate that far, can't hurt to ask.

PS - Keddie resort, no. That's cabins, not trailers. TRAILER PARK. Get ready, get set...GOOGLE.

  33. I don't think this trailer park would be anywhere in Marin County, too expensive, if they even allow trailer parks. Somewhere south of San Francisco, like Humbolt County is more likely.

  36. Cetera still makes a ton of money from royalties, doesn't he? Would a pot operation eclipse his other earnings?

  37. @Mrs. Libnish — That is a pretty doggone similar blind from back in 2007! Makes ya wonder if this is recycled? But Ronnie James Dio died back in 2010, so maybe the owner of this particular trailer park was inspired by Dio? Personally, I think this sounds a whole lot like Bolinas, CA, a place I had the misfortune of visiting when I was a teen (my ex-hippie mom decided she wanted to look up a freaky old friend). Super weird, locals removed the town’s signs on the highway, and they were definitely NOT into outsiders dropping in unexpected. Super creepy!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I’m sticking with my theory this location is in Bolinas, Ca., mostly based on my personal experience that the place is super weird & creepy. Did a quick google search and found out Stephan Jenkins from Third Eye Blind (not in rock hall of fame) and Paul Kantner & Grace Slick have all lived there. Jefferson Airplane is in the HoF, so I’m guessing it’s Grace Slick, since Paul died in 2016. Problem with my guess is Enty’s use of “he” as the pronoun in the blind. Perhaps it’s the red herring? But most likely, my guess is just wrong. Can’t blame a girl for trying!

  39. really hope this is not Neil. He seems way too mellow for this...Sammy Hagar because he has that Cabo Wabo crap down in Cabo San Lucas but is he in the hall of fame?

    Please not Neil.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Neil Young makes a LOT of royalty income. He doesn’t need any extra hassles.

Bolinas is barely outside the Bay Area. This place sounds a lot further north to me.

  41. In case anyone cares, I know the RE Broker who sold the California town(?) of Nipton, CA just southwest of the Nevada/California line.
It was bought by a marijuana company who plans to make it a marijuana resort destination with growing and selling of various marijuana products.

So, since marijuana is now starting to bring in the big tax dollars for the states, more states are now legalizing it.

(This past year, Nevada earned more then $42 Million from the tax on marijuana.)

    So, no big deal anymore.
No need to hide while growing it.
It's being done in the open as we speak right here in Las Vegas/Clark County, Nevada.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't quite understand the secrecy.
    It's legalized

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ok!

Since I have the resources, I think I will spend some time -- while waiting for the latest low-ball offer for my listed motel portfolio -- researching this blind.

Yes, I can find out who owns it and where it is.

But, Enty could spoil my research by posting the reveal!
But, I would just have another potential lead.

    Oh, well!

    And, a-way I go!

(I'll be back when I have the results -- if Enty doesn't post it first!)
