This former A- list mostly movie actress who had quite the run back in the day before coming out (which caused a huge run of people being quiet about their sexuality) was passed over for a chance at a big sequel because the lead actor wanted to be seen opposite someone young. Plus, they hated filming with each other during the original, so that was never going to happen.
Kelly McGillis/Tom Cruise-TG 2
ReplyDeleteSaw kelly Mcgillis in the DM. She was so sexy back then. I'm sure Tom wouldn't want his tinyman ego hurt over sharing some screen time with a frumpy lesbian.
ReplyDeleteThey could of at least made a cameo for her tho. like Stan Lee. But old and gay and a woman. Rest assured a certain crowd would go wild
Yep. I expect it has more to do with how badly she aged than anything else, though. Ultimately people that make movies want good looking people in their movies.
ReplyDeleteHate to say it, but Kelly doesn’t look like she could play the part of anyone’s ‘love interest” these days. Aside from her age, she has really let herself go.
ReplyDeleteIf they hated filming with each other then obviously the producer and star wouldn’t want to deal with that again.
ReplyDeleteThey could cast her as Tom Cruise's mom though. That would be a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteI don't think fighting alcoholism, being injured in ANOTHER home invasion, surviving being mostly homeless, and being a rape survivor constitutes letting herself go, but whatever.
ReplyDeleteShe's 62 Tammy is 57 no way is he ever going to let a woman that age as a love interest. Jennifer C is 48 but she looks 35. And she is an Oscar winner to give this lifetime + movie some clout.
ReplyDeleteShe has been very graceful in interviews. She doesn't care she isn't in it she just lives her life.
Well said, Zebra. I can see the reasons why she wouldn't be cast, but those implying she let herself go really need to learn compassion.
ReplyDeleteThe Don Simpson biography has a great portion where Kelly had her G.F's at a pool party after filming and Tom had several boys there.
ReplyDeleteTom and Kelly didn't have great chemistry in the original.
ReplyDeleteIt's not as bad as the romance flick that starred Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson - they look like a divorced couple forced to share a taxicab - but it's pretty close.
Do not consider Kelly old.
ReplyDeleteThe movie is about a man wrestling with his sexuality.
ReplyDeleteYes no knock on Kelly who had amazing presence in the original but even back then they were MEH at best. He was like a total BOY to her ALL WOMAN... bit Leo-Kate in Titanic or again Tom with Rebecca in RISKY BUSINESS.... just mismatched but we all knew they wouldn't last as lovers. She could have popped up in a scene/cameo. All kinds of fear and memories would pop up about Goose given his son as the focal point and Kelly WAS with Maverick during this tragic time. They really should have secured Meg Ryan too since TG Maverick is about Goose's son. Wouldn't it have made sense AND well she stole her scenes in the original even NOT as a big star. Still.... oh well.
ReplyDeleteFrankly the Kelly/Tom thing was barely tolerable the first time....thirty three freakin years ago.
ReplyDeleteNo way she could pull off any kind of love interest story. Sorry but old, fat lesbians aren't sexy...at least to movie going audiences and before I get hammered, she called herself "old" and "fat" in ET interview released this am.
Kiki71-- great points! Meg should have been in this movie, even MORE than Kelly! I was an As the World Turns watcher at the time, and got such kick out of her making the most out of her part (Julianne Moore and Marisa Tomei were from similar era of that soap, btw). Im sure they'll have some sort of explanation in the script that will explain Kelly's character's absence, without having to pay/give screentime to the actress.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy that Kelly isnt bitter about not being included. Im sorry to hear she's had a tough road in her personal life. I remember her being quite enchanting in Witness.
Maybe the next one can be filmed in the nursing home.
ReplyDeleteI'll say it: I think she was a strange choice even then. She was so much larger than the guys who were supposedly in heat over her.
ReplyDeleteShe looked matronly in comparison to the young hotshot pilots she was supposedly teaching. I also didn't find her believable as a flight instructor.
They were the biggest odd couple in the history of film.
ReplyDeleteShe had big ol cow eyes. Blech!
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry Kelly has had a rough time too personally. But I never cared for her as an actress so could care less that she isn’t in it.
ReplyDeleteThe only cast member that isn't old is Miles Teller. This movie should have took place at the VA hospital instead.
ReplyDeleteAt least she was brave and came out....TC has hidden his sexuality behind a veil of COS and has had a slew of contract wives....so which one deserves your scorn?
ReplyDeleteKelly chose to not live the hollywood life and this is the result. And she seems super happy and healthy!
ReplyDeleteSorry folks but have you seen a recent pic of KM?? I can't imagine a role for her in sequel. Probably didn't have anything to do with chemistry or 'age'. If she was still hot she would probably be in it.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason Kristen Stewart's dry ass came to mind.

ReplyDeleteGeez....Christina...total homophobic comment...are you saying that gay actors can't play straight characters?
ReplyDeleteYou are right - that comes across very wrong. I will delete it!
ReplyDeleteWill they cast much younger actress for the female lead, compare to the original cast of male leads brought back, in their 50s + ?
ReplyDeleteIt's Hollywood tradition. The woman will probably be half their age.
She’s probably a nice lady and I think she looks perfectly normal for her age. But this isn’t real life, it’s a movie and it makes sense to not cast her, by Hollywood standards. I am sorry for her trauma and her struggles and I wish her happiness and good health.
ReplyDeletePeople get old and fat, it happens to pretty much everyone and it doesn’t seem like the end of the world. Considering what some people go through with cancer, and other horrible illnesses, loss of family, children, parents, whatever, I’d choose being old and fat any day, over any of those others.
