Blind Items Revealed #1

September 7, 2019

This A+ list comedy showrunner claims to be a champion of diversity, but has "let go" of all three diversity hire writers who have walked through the door on his show. For the upcoming final season, his room is mostly white and male.

  1. So a typical virtue signaling Hollywood Liberal then?

  2. Earth to showrunner: we live in the #metoo era. Comedy doesn't have to be funny any longer. Stop expecting your writers to have that obsolete skill.

    1. With all white boys in the room it won't be.

  3. so people should get hired based on the colour of their skin? Wasn't Martin Luther King Jr against that? People should be hired on the basis of their character, not on the colour of their skin?

  4. The cast is pretty diverse.

  5. I guess white males are just really good at comedy writing.

  6. so what? The show is supposed to be funny

Hate to break this to you, but most satirists and comedians are liberal. The ones who aren't funny are the Republican ones like Jeff Foxworthy.

"so people should get hired based on the colour of their skin? Wasn't Martin Luther King Jr against that? People should be hired on the basis of their character, not on the colour of their skin?"

So....what you're saying is that only white men deserved to be hired, and if a minority is hired it's because of their skin color

  8. "three diversity hire writers," That's a pretty strong statement on its own, like the interviews took place in the Home Depot paint dept where they could color match the applicants.

The cast carries that show anyway, sometimes you can see the frustration in the cast's faces like they know they could be funnier on their own.

  10. who gives a shit?
stop pandering to pc idiots, and give job based on merit, you fuckwits

    1. The merit belongs to people of good conscience, not racist white choads

    2. Merit? Do white guys still think they receive jobs on merit? Now THAT is privilege: thinking you are special when you are obviously and demonstrably not.

Equality will be a reality when people of color can be as mediocre and dull-witted as most other people and still end up a Division Manager or head of the editing unit. Mediocrity is the standard, not brilliance.

There is no such thing as making it in Hollywood without knowing of or serendipitously stumbling into the orbit of someone with influence and then being obnoxiously relentless. Stumbling into that orbit assumes a trail of connections with the bread crumbs leading to the office of a minor bigwig. Relentless desire is an attribute, not a marker of intelligence or talent. We can all name a dozen performers who thrive in the well of mediocrity celebrating their inflated self-regard.

It's a bell curve. Even in the writer's room.

  11. "The room is mostly white and male"

Yet, the biggest influence, outside of Schur himself, is Megan Amram. So far, she may just have five episodes under her name, but she's responsible for most of the background jokes.

  14. So he couldn't possibly have let them go because they were crap at their jobs?

    1. Most likely, no. Once you're in that room, staying comes down to personality conflicts bred of incompatible sensibilities.

  15. I love it when alt-right morons out themselves by using terms such as "virtue signalling", naming the Clintons or anyone associated with them in blinds because of the fantasy of them being evil, and use "liberal" as an insult.

    1. Reading Alt-Right comments is a similar experience to listening to Coast-to-Coast AM. The disjointed thought processes while being furious that the government is perfecting remote-viewing and hiding extra-terrestrials is definitely car-wreck reading at its finest.

"Lines are open, west of the Rockies!"

  16. Do you not see the hypocrisy in your criticism? Of course, you don't. You're "liberal" and everyone to the right of Fidel Castro is alt-right in your world.

  17. I think this revealed is too general, Enty, details are everything

  18. So he's basically like all showrunners.

  19. @Whisper
Enty has zero details. The source or the writer is obviously someone who is pissed off at Michael Schur, who is also a well-known liberal. The blind merely tries to depict the "champion of diversity" as a hypocrite, like all liberals are.

Funny thing is that Schur commented on the diversity in his writers room six months ago. His words are totally different from the description in the blind.

    https://www.vulture.com/2019/03/good-place-writers-panel-good-one-podcast.html

"I knew many of these people from Parks and Recreation, but the ones I didn’t, I read the stuff they wrote, obviously. But I think I was most interested in like, I hate the word, but diversity. It’s not ethnic diversity; it’s like intellectual diversity."

I haven't find any statement or interview showing that Schur emphasized diversity in the writers room.

You can also notice in the pictures that the writers panel had a few people who could be the "diversity hires" described by the blind item.
Cord Jefferson is of mixed ethnicity (his dad is black). Still lists on his Twitter page that he works on The Good Place.
Andrew Law (Asian) has at least one credit for the final season. So, definitely not fired.

Three out of the four female writers for the show (Amram, Jen Statsky, Kassia Miller) also appear to be on board for the final season.

And then, there Rae Sanni, who came from the stand-up scene. She's now one of the main writers for A Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO, which is already renewed. Either she was fired from The Good Place, but she still mentions she worked on the show in her Instagram bio, or she took the opportunity to join a new show that's more suited to her strengths as a writer and also had potential to last for a few seasons (it's common for shows to have a smaller room when it's the last season, given that the writing spends more time finding closure to arcs than developing new plots).

Once again, there are very little facts to support the claims made in that blind. But, hey, that shouldn't bother you...

  20. https://www.vulture.com/2019/05/tv-showrunners-advice-staffing-schur-khan-flahive-mensch.html

Schur.: All members of a dominant, entrenched majority have a moral responsibility to transfer some of their power to members of minority groups. That means casting, hiring writers, hiring directors, choosing which stories to tell, choosing whom to support and back as new showrunners. I personally have been, I’d say, “decent” at this, and am trying to be better every year.

  21. @Angela, do a better job at research and read the above comment/vulture article from only four months ago. Also just scroll through Michael Schur's twitter account sometime. The point is definitely his liberal hypocrisy. If he cared about diversity hires he'd keep them aboard even if they weren't good and would mentor them, not get rid of them. That's the whole point of diversity hiring in Hollywood - hire someone of color who doesn't have to be good at their job. If you just get rid of them, you are hurting their careers more than helping.

  22. So Chidi, Tahani, and Jason won't have as much air time? Too bad.

  23. Oh you kids. A Writer's Room is filled with what the showrunner wants so he--yes, HE--can be as douchey as he can without being reported to HR. #MeToo and #TimesUp has scared the shit out of white guys and they're CYA-ing like a bitch.

Let white guys write about white guys. We'll take everybody else.
