For years I have been telling you that the permanent A list mostly movie actor with multiple Oscar nominations/wins and another on the way is not the person you see portrayed in his carefully crafted image. Some of that came out this week via a former back in the day A+ list actor.

Henry Winkler is one of the "Good" people in Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteWay, way back in the 1980's, I was once able to get him a film script I wrote, and it came back with hand written notes on how to make it better.
To me, this meant he actually read it, digested it, and offered suggestions to make it better.
But it ultimately wasn't something he wanted to do.
(It was about an old man suffering Alzheimer who kept talking to his "friend" long dead, that only he could see and hear.)
I had thought it would work for him and Robin Williams.
That would have been an awesome movie!

Who are the questionable friends of Hanks?
ReplyDeleteOn Gilbert Gottfried's podcast "Amazing Collossal" they interviewed Henry Winkler. He did not offer details about Hanks, but the interviewers laughed at the realization that both of the two popularly characterized nicest guys in Hollywood hate each other. Regarding Hanks, his public persona seems fake and trying too hard to be seen as a great guy. I liked him better when he did comedy movies at the beginning and I never saw him in interviews. Winkler does not seem to be faking it. If Hanks really is a great guy, he should dial it back to look credible.

ReplyDeleteMy wife and I actually sat next to Hanks and Rita for a performance of Cirque Du Soleil (Dralion) and they couldn't of been nicer. Was sitting right next to Tom and he made the effort to chat during the performance with me (I didn't want to bother him). He was totally cool and we shared a couple of quiet chuckles during the performance. Just my two cents. I don't know anything about the freaky deaky stuff.
ReplyDeleteI know someone who went to college with Hanks, used to give him a ride because he had no car. She told me a couple of cute stories about him but she says he was the nicest guy then. And mutual friends that kept contact with him (she didn’t) have said he stayed as humble and as nice as he always was.

Also and however, someone who worked for De Niro has been talking, and more, about his behavior(s) towards his "underlings." Okay,they shot Turner & Hooch up here on the Monterey Peninsula. A few days before filming begins Winker and Hanks wander into the store in Carmel where I work. Some runs to the back and tells me The Fonz is up front and I go up to check it out. Winkler was cool, signing autographs, ans saying hi to everyone. Hanks never took off is sunglasses and couldn't wait to get out of there.

When Hanks filmed the upcoming Mr. Rogers film in the Pittsburgh area, he was nothing but gracious and friendly to all locals that approached him. If he had an ego 30 years ago,thats not the worst thing he could do. If other things are true,then that would be highly disappointing.

ReplyDeleteand to those asking, I think the friend of Hanks that doesn't sit right with everyone is Spielberg. Those 2 have been thick as thieves since Saving Private Ryan days and with everything we know about Spielberg, many have felt there was no way Hanks was as clean as portrayed.
I remember reading about a carpenter who built a creepy dungeon in Hank's mansion. Something like that.

Hanks is definitely a creep, and it's a given that Henry Winkler has MUCH MORE to say about his behavior on set. The way he deflected the question in the interview is extremely telling. He can't say more, or his career would be over.
ReplyDeleteOr... it could be that, thirty years ago, Tom Hanks second guessed Henry Winkler's skills as a director (he was the original director for Turner & Hooch, not an actor). Given that Winkler has ultimately directed two films in all (Memories of Me and Cop & 1/2), that neither of them has made much of an impression, Hanks may have been right on this one.
But, yeah, okay, that would mean that Hanks is maybe not the monster I fancy him to be, and that would force me to admit that I'm a worthless piece of shit, and that I get my kicks by fancying that every person who doesn't share my views on society and politics is a degenerate from Hollyweird. And I definitely don't want that. So, Hanks is indeed a creep.
Love that the consensus here is Team Henry. Winkler seems like a genuinely good person who isn't merely playing the part of "Mr. Nice Guy". Everything Hanks does seems insincere

DeleteI was so fortunate to meet Henry Winkler and John Ritter about 20 years ago when they were starring in a production of "The Dinner Party" at the Kennedy Center in DC at the same time that my 12 year old niece was appearing as Scout in a production of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' (also at the Kennedy Center). Both of those guys went so far out of their way to engage with us and out children (we were all having lunch at a deli across the street from the Kennedy Center). I still have their signed programs, etc but, most of all, best memories of two of the most wonderful men one could ever meet! It broke my heart when John Ritter died so young; I love Henry Winkler so much and hope that he will outlive all of his fans!!

I remember thinking, "I swear, if Hanks turns out to be a sex pest, I'm burning Hollywood to the ground.". Other people who raised the red flags for me were Bill Cosby, Rolf Harris, Louie CK, Kevin Spacey, and that chick who was dating the chef who looked like Epstein. Spielberg's child stars all seem to go crazy too but nothing he has said or done has raised any red flags so maybe he's good at hiding it?
Another random "hey, what's going here?" thought. At a recent Comic Con panel, people were suggesting celebrities who should have superpowers. Most suggested Keanu Reeves but the non-americans in the panel all just kind of went "Nah... I'm gunna shut up now... but nah. Ok sure, whatever.".

ReplyDeleteI was in high school when Bosom Buddies was on. He started his career in drag. It's an initiation. Fast forward to Saving Private Ryan. I can not even start on the many reasons I hated that movie, not the least of which that I knew many vets that were literally traumatized in the THEN DDAY museum's IMAX or whatever version it was. I was a tour guide at the time and my dad volunteered at the THEN DDAY museum. I know more than I can get into about that whole VENTURE but it would be a book. Hanks was in New Orleans constantly, because I get he got close to Ambrose et al when he did SCHPIELBERG's movie. They used it for fundraising for the DDAY museum, and then they changed the name to the WW11 Museum to expand the fundraising base. Now they have a whole complex in downtown New Orleans, which includes some fancy ass resort / hotel that is on the brink of opening, I think. It's a fucking circus around celebrating "the greatest generation" to milk them of their money before they are all dead. It literally makes me sick. Did I say every other week Hanks was in town fundraising for this shit. Yes. It's a really cool museum but I don't like anything or anyone behind it.

He said she pulled her eyebrows out, because of her problems. The movie she was in starred Molly Ringwald and River Phoenix was in it. It went by several different names.

So I went and watched the Henry Winkler video on Heather O'Rourke. I wouldn't be surprised if something sinister that people are alluding to her did indeed happen to her, BUT..other than the flu, he's mixing the details of Heather's Death/Life up with Judith Barsi. At least in that video. Judith was a child actress who died around the same time. She had been the voice of Ducky in The Land Before Time, the little girl in All Dogs Go To Heaven, Michael's daughter in Jaws The Revenge, etc. Her father was very physically and verbally abusive to both her and her mother. Judith had started plucking her eyelashes out from stress. Makeup people and people on set were aware but no one stepped in. Her father ended up shooting her and her mother in their sleep. Then set them on fire.

@Artful Roger,you are likely correct.I didn't realize the timing was so close. Judith Barsi's death points out the fact that everyone knew things went on but did nothing. This just happened to be with the Father not the industry was the guilty party. But they and government agencies knew.
