    1. I am with you, right up there !
What's shocking is we are so desensitized that a serious issue like college admissions fraud which takes away opportunities from worthy/deserving students doesn't shake us anymore !

  3. And the resident bigot, Gen-z chimes in again.

I can't stress enough how irritating it is to hear and see people bleat about how "students had opportunities taken away from them." Although, they may have a point, since USC IS the only college or university in the entire country.

    1. It's the money laundering -- shifting bribe money from offshore through a nonprofit/charity to make it look legit -- that is the issue for the feds and why she's in deep shit and should have just pled guilty and asked for mercy. Reporters generally are stupid when it comes to covering anything to do with money and like the Varsity Blues hook much better. But cheatig on your SATs by itself isn't a crime.

This is not about getting kid into college. It is about tax evasion. They are making an example of her. People better clean up their finances, because Laughlin case will set a precedent. She is going to prison...and no, a laser smile and a Hallmark movie will not save her.

  6. I have been following the Varsity Blues cases but I am an educational consultant. I advise students and families on the college search and application process for a living. There were 13 colleges implicated, so far and not just USC. There are likely many, many more. It's maddening since women of color who used a false address so their kids could go to better public schools have been imprisoned for as many as 12 years! So far Felicity got 2 weeks for her $15,000. A bay area winery owner got 5 months for his $75,000. Aunt Becky spent $500,000 and denies any wrongdoing. She's in for a rude awakening. I hope.

There have always been parents with the $$$ to donate. When they actually donate a building, the entire community benefits from that. The only folks benefitting from this scandal were the kids, the parents' fake tax write off, and those receiving the bribes. It's why the Harvard affirmative action case was such BS. The percentage of legacy and wealthy sport athletic admits at such schools far exceeds the number of people of color admitted.

    Rant over

  7. @ DarylsBigFan- exactly. That's what I've said since this broke. Quid pro quo college admission is a well known and long standing tradition in higher education world wide... when it comes to light people do the appropriate tut tutting and declarations of committees will be formed!Investigations will be done! Heads will roll! And then it will quietly go away.. maybe a low level admissions person will take the hit. This isn't going to go away.. this is tax evasion, and not on a $17k level like FH, this is $500K +. She may know/be able to star power judges on a local level, but this is federal. The IRS took down Capone, the Teflon Don, and numerous other nefarious types under the RICO umbrella.. LL should have fallen on her sword like FH and begged for leniency instead of smirking it up like she's too important to be bothered with this..
