Did anyone not watch Leah Remini's shows? The hell that $cio puts people through who try to leave. Not to mention how poorly kids are educated within their system. Plus he would immediately lose all his friends (since he is not supposed to hang with anyone but $cio people). He is in a tough situation, made worse by the fact that his dad is the face of $cio. They are an evil group that would harass him to the ends of the earth.
