Blind Item #9

This recent big-budget release will not only put you to sleep, but it has been demonstrated that most of the story itself was made up.

  1. +1 on the Irishman. I was hoping for Goodfellas or The Departed....what we got was ZZZzzzs. We turned it off and figured we would try again at some point. We'll see. lol

  2. I have trouble watching anything with De Niro nowadays.

  3. Hmm, I mean that could be a brilliant marketing strategy! Come to the theatre and get 3 hours deep sleep! I could see myself doing that!

  4. Same with me Brayson. He lost me after he contracted TDS :)

  5. Agree. Hard to believe how compelling a presence De Niro used to be.

When I see him now I immediately look away, for fear of Ben Stiller walking into the frame.

  6. It's three and a half hours, I think it's faster to read the book it was based on.

  7. There is no way on this earth I am going to devote 3 and 1/2 hours to a movie.

  8. looks like his beloved TriBeCa film festival may be changing hands as well.. hell always be involved, but he isn't really "there" a it were. Not his biggest fan<but that was/is a NYC institution

You gotta see it! The beginning is so creepy. Old men with CGI faces but walking like old men. The curb stomping scene was embarrassing.

  11. the whole show was embarrassing. i stopped watching after 2 hours. i want my time back!

  12. I thought it was great. It must be sad to pick movies only where you agree with the politics of the actor. I bet you run out of James woods,Jon Voight and Scott baio pictures pretty quick!

  13. the worst part of The Irish Man is a tie between ..

old De Niro flashback to young De Niro which is clearly old De Niro with brown dyed hair

later in the film young De Niro kicking a grocer like an 80 year old

  14. Irishman nothin more than old man cash grab.

  15. I have started to watch twice. It is sooo damn sloooooow.

  16. I don't like CGI faces. They are creepy.

  17. I cant stand Deniro these days, so watching him in the Joker was great because I think many of us secretly want to do the same to him lol .. so yeah other than the joker screw that guy

  18. Love De Niro even more now that he has no effs left to give, is still a fantastic actor, expects nothing more than decency from political leadership and drives willfully insane Trumpists up the wall.

How exactly this qualifies as a blind though... movie review websites are thataways!

  19. There are so many actors that disagree with me politically that I will gladly still support. Same with family/ friends in real life. But, DeNiro comes across as an angry old man drenched in bitterness. No wonder his wife is leaving him. He is also supposedly very mean to his staff and a cheater.

And, I will never advocate violence against someone just because I disagree with he or she, but, that scene in the Joker was a classic ! "Damn!!!" moment.

  20. Huh. I thought this was 1917.

  21. It's top 5 Scorsese.

  22. I almost watched it the other night. I accidentally took NON DROWSY cough medicine before bed and OH NO I was staring at the wall all night praying for it to be over. I can't take any of that sudafed stuff, it makes my skin crawl. I kept grinding my teeth and crying, literally, about it. It's probably best I didn't put this movie on. It might have pushed me over the edge. I do love Scorcese and ALL of his movies but this one sounds like a pass.

  23. I think it was finding out about the teen hookers in France and supposedly teen looking ones in the US that turned me off De Niro.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I read the book so was looking forward to the movie. My main reaction to it was that all of the actors were too old for the roles they were playing. They should have had guys roughly 40 years old in the roles then aged them. The book was good though.

  25. @DJS NOLA, De Niro deserved to be in Joker. It was basically a ripoff of Taxi Driver with a little Bernie Goetz and Fight Club thrown in. I didn't blame De Niro for phoning it in for that movie.

  27. It’s so sad for me because DeNiro was always my favorite actor. Now he’s a complete joke. He’s deranged, always “extra” angry, and spouting complete nonsense. From such great heights he fell. Now he is nothing more than a clown.

    ReplyDelete
  28. De Niro's always had a rep for a bad temper and some serious anger issues, particularly as he's gotten older. I've heard some rumors from people in NY that he has his own demons stemming from some bad stuff happening to him in his childhood (don't want to go into more detail... even shady old men deserve their privacy). But I'd never not watch a movie because an actor happens to be a dick in real life. I thought the Irishman was really good, if a bit slow and not quite as great as Goodfellas.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can't wait to see it.
If he's saying JFK was murdered by the mob, in a conspiracy, he's right.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love DeNiro, and I love him telling it like it is about Trump.
He should have trademarked his phrase about him, made a fortune marketing that phrase on everything.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Of course its easy to have TDS, they old fat fart is a urine soaked orange cockroach. Got dementia in full swing too.

So go see the movie! forget about the cockroach for 3 hours.

We were trapped with official lies in the Soviet Union, but many Americans are willingly following Trump and the GOP into the post-truth world. My latest op-ed: (on cnn.com)

  33. Overall The Irishman wasn't bad but it in no way lives up to the hype. Deniro is way too old to be doing fight scenes, but he and Pacino were more cringeworthy when they were in Righteous Kill 10 or 12 years back.

Pacino looks and sounds nothing like Jimmy Hoffa, and IMO he was doing character he has been playing since Heat and Scent of a Woman.

If you want a good reason to watch it, see it for the scene when Hoffa (Pacino) is chewing the asses of the Teamsters Board of Directors and appears to lose his mind. The movie is worth sitting through just for that scene.

  34. It was spectacular. Anyone who is bored of it does not understand it. Also, I'm currently reading the book and it's just like the movie. Whether Frank Sheeran was telling the truth or not is questionable given he was on his death bed. But it was what he claimed to be his truth. I'm going to laugh at all of you when it wins Oscars. I saw it at New York film fest and it was breathtaking so fuck off.

  35. Anyone who falls asleep watching The Irishman should just stick w their shitty comic book movies. Easily top 5 for Scorsese.

  36. When I was a kid - I was an unusual kid - I would stay up late on Thursdays (easy to make it through the next day, Friday tired) and I would stay up late on Friday (usually I did not have to wake up early on Saturday, except in those years when I had a paper route) and watch the old guys on Carson trying to be funny and hip, whether they were funny or not is besides the point, I was fascinated by their ambition to be cool guys on Carson when I knew they were older than Methuselah.

Let's be kind to old people, many of them still have a lot to contribute, and years from now some kid who watched the Irishman is gonna have no idea what he is trying to remember when he remembers that supremely unusual work of art where a bunch of great-grand-pas were running around doing whatever it is they were doing.

  38. The CGI did nothing for the old, cataract eyes. The eyes were gross.

I watched it with my husband, he read the book earlier this year and was excited to see this movie, waiting for it to come out. Even though he now hates DeNiro.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I absolutely get your sentiment @Stephencooper.....But, why is The Godfather 2 and Taxi Cab considered classics with DeNiro while The Irishman is getting criticism because to me it did not draw me in like The Departed or Goodfellas (of The Godfather movies 1 and 2).

I think their is valid criticism to say that Deniro is a classic as much as Pacino and Pesci, alll liberal, but only one is considered ornery: DeNiro.

So age, has nothing to do with it as consersaives/ independents know where they stand in Hollyweird...but, hatred towards half the American population, himself, and anyone who disagrees with him...AT ALL on ANY ISSUE...is why DeNiro has lost repeat. DeNiro is classical projectionist.

Just look at Pesci, and Pacino who I will watch in anything.

There is a difference. Just how conservatives and independents know the difference between a RINO/ a "Catholic" late term abortion loving Catholic like Pelosi and someone rational and principled.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @TeeHee, Taxi Driver. :)

Actually, I've heard that Pesci is a Republican. Oddly, enough De Niro is friends with quite a few of those- I know he maintained a friendship with James Woods for quite a while too. I think his beef with DT is very personal: they ran in similar NY circles for a while and there may be some bad blood there.

He's an interesting fellow. I think there's a lot of shit about him that may only ever come out after his death, based on some things I've heard (and I'm connected in many ways to the NY show-biz scene). It's probably not going to be the shit that some people on this website think however.

  41. @Unknown...I get you. There is corruption on both sides. I just think Trump called it out.

I actually have a few connections as well in NY....which I base my comments on..( publishing, producing and weirdly, male modeling).

I get you. I think when there is a Patreon...aka...I'll publish if you pay.. it is a red flag.

  47. I'm not keen on large age discrepencies (power/knowledge) when it comes to sex but the French don't mind. Not only is the age of consent only 15 yrs, but incest is legal too. Mother-son, father-daughter, brother-sister etc. Even incestuous marriage is legal. The only thing not allowed is non-consensual sex/incest under 15yo. France is not alone, five or six other european countries have similar lenient laws. President Macron started his affair with his wife while as a student in her class, as was her eldest daughter. He was 15 and she 39ish. I believe Napoleon B introduced the laws.

  48. 2:00 the Biden Council to Foreign Relations Biden himself states:

I'm tell you. You are NOT getting a billion dollars...I said...We are leaving in 6 hours. If the prosecutor is not getting money...SON OF BITCH. If the prosecutor is not fired, you are not getting the money. We'll son of a Bitch."

    Biden's own words.

  51. It was tedious and boring and it was indeed a sleeper. 3.5 hours was ridiculous for a non-action movie. Martin sure is full of himself to put that crap out. Easy pay day for everyone though!.

  52. I'm not sure wish the deal is, but right now Netflix turns out films & series, except for a few, work big start names, but the shows have one thing in common: mediocrity. such a waste of talent - there a few exceptions, great productions have given way to mediocrity.
