For the past few months, the permanent A list actress who is an Oscar winner/nominee has been willing to talk to me after a years long hiatus. This is not about her so much although she is the one who brought up the topic. We were talking about certain events that happen towards the end of the year and the public even has a term for it even though the culmination is not until late winter or early spring.
It starts now though. It starts now with an organization that has a get together and if you are invited, you better show up or get on their bad side forever. It is also the time of the year that members of this organization will start calling actresses for "dinner meetings." If you don't want to go, you better have a substitute. A former A+ list mostly movie actress all of you know went on a dozen of those dinner meetings which is why she gets nominated even in years she does't have a movie that necessarily qualifies time wise. There is a married A list dual threat actress who is also an Oscar winner/nominee who did the same thing for five or six years straight two decades ago and now has a younger actress she sends in her place. This all began because of this back in the day really bad actress. Like Tori Spelling bad. The actress took on five or six of these guys and the next thing you know she was bathed in glory. Since that time, everyone knew how to get ahead. Many many take advantage of it. Lest you think actors don't have to do anything, you would be wrong. They also have dinner meetings or have been known to have to attend children's birthday parties or be a co-host of a dinner party. This permanent A list mostly movie actor who has a movie out right now has done all of the above.
As for the Oscar winner/nominee who is talking to me again. She says she has been on a lot of dinners, but drew the line at after dinner activities.

DeleteI can't believe anyone holds those sham Golden Globe awards in any sort of esteem enough to go through with any of this.
ReplyDeleteDoTell,we know and Hollywood knows,but the general public think they are legit. And therefore,people will go to see the films. And,let's face it,other awards aren't much better.

DeleteI don't think anyone with an interest in Hollywood respects the Golden Globes. I think most people think of them as akin to the People's Choice Awards, and the People magazine of the awards world.

ReplyDeleteThe Pia Zamora win for “Butterfly” was always said to have been bought by her then incredibly wealthy husband, Meshulam Riklis, who flew all the members of the HFPA to Vegas to see Zamora perform, comped them with rooms, food and casino chips, and gave them watches, jewelry and other goodies.

ReplyDeleteAs badly as it back fired on Pia Zadora back then, it seems that the Golden Globes would have stopped being a thing at all. They are a joke as it is. Everybody knows they are bought and sold and mean nothing.

Good for Renee though. And, any other actress/ actor in Hollywood that refused to sell themselves for a stupid Gold Statue.
@Moose,they saw her perform,not only sing. No bigwig is going to be swayed by normal comps.

ReplyDeleteAnd Pia did end up fairly successful with her cabaret/cruise ship/nightclub act. That's what Raquel Welch and Debbie Reynolds ended up doing at the end of their acting careers. There is a niche for everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe general public believes it to be a prestigious award given by a prestigious organization. Even Pia Zadora got a couple of years of fame off winning it.

I love Ricky Gervais, but I didn't like when he took a jab at RDJ regarding drug abuse that is long behind him.

ReplyDeleteJodie Fosters family mother and brother were in the entertainment industry. Much like Kristen Stewart, Gwyneth Paltrow and countless other actors who have nepotism to thank for their Hollywood careers.
ReplyDeleteNot saying those withl the family in the business haven't slept their way to awards and higher fame, but, they always had the leg up and connections that an aspiring actress from say Iowa never did.
Jodie, Gwyneth, and Michael Douglas also are very, very talented. Celebrity connections do not guarantee success. Case in point: Rumer Willis.
ReplyDeleteIt does say Brad did the dinner party and show up at children's parties,remember,Pitt is a huge star and his presence is worth more to a bigwig than a less famous actress. MAYBE he put out in the early days, but having Brad next to you could just attract a higher class of women.

DeleteGuesser, and who are these "Bigwigs" of which you speak? HFPA is made up of just that, foreign journalists. An entertainment writer for a Polish paper or some journal in Argentina is far from a "Bigwig" and yes, they are very impressed by comps. I did award season marketing and if they weren't impressed, they wouldn't have it in their contracts that any screening done for HFPA members must be catered. If you're impressed by mini sliders and crab cakes I'm pretty sure being comped at a top Vegas hotel and given free money to gamble will more than sway you.
