Alfre Woodard was robbed. She should have gotten nominated for Clemency even though it was not a box office hit. I am sure Renee will win it for playing a caricature of Judy.

ReplyDeleteCan someone provide a good reason why we should care that all the directors are male (one being Asian), and only 1 of the 20 acting nods is for a woman of color?
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to oppose diversity - but if the point of this award show is to have your peers recognize the best of the bunch, shouldn't we be more concerned that outstanding performances get recognized, rather than counting how many of each sex/race/... got a nod?

Actors nominate and vote on actors, which I think is how it should be. So people who don't like it can blame them.
ReplyDelete@moose, I think the concern is that certain people's work is being disregarded because of race and/or gender. It isn't so much a complaint of inclusion, as it is good old fashioned prejudice.

ReplyDeleteI wonder how uncomfortable the Endgame actors were when it was said that Marvel was going to push them for nominations. I'm certain they are all very happy to be part of that universe, but I'm supposing that the major players in Avengers world that have nominations history probably would prefer to be recognized for other work and were happy to let Oscar noms go to other actors this year.
Don't like Brad Pitt, but he was good in Once Upon a Time.

And really DGAF about the rest of show in general. Props to the Academy for not hiring a host. It's a waste of money for such crappy ratings and too difficult to find someone who is actually funny and woke enough to host.
However if just one actor or actress will admit on stage that they had to suck d!ck to get their award, I will start watching again next year.

ReplyDeleteI want to watch Marriage Story on Netflix, but is it gonna be a big downer and trigger all my horrible memories of divorce? That’s my fear & why I haven’t watched it. My ex walked out on me & our 2 lil boys and never looked back. Hurt me, that’s fine. But hurt my kids? F you. They are grown men now, but each have permanent emotional scars from what he put them through. I rarely ever discuss it, because it gets me so pissed off. The only other option is Irishman, and everyone says it’s excruciatingly boring. I’ll have to wait til the others come to the bargain cinema.

'marriage story' was horrible, IMO. only bright spot was adam driver, who's good in everything. but the movie was NOT good.

i like to look at the dresses before the show, and then i turn it off.
I cannot believe Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson were completely shut out. Each of them, Pattinson ESPECIALLY, should have been nominated. Driver's nomination should have gone to him. One of the Supporting Actor noms should have been Dafoe's.

1917 and Parasite will sweep with maybe a token Oscar to the black lady to avoid racism charges. Between now and ceremony all we are going to hear is "Oscars so White" again.
They will find a way to shut Joker out completely to appease the haters.
I kind of wish the Oscars were fun again and they would give a nomination to someone like J-Lo just for kicks.
The only other funny thing to think about is how everyone involved in Cats thought they would be riding high today. I bet Swift and Hudson just knew they were going to be nominated for BSA.
Oscars are just boring and stupid and not even worth mentioning after today.
Sorry not even cable movie...I meant streaming movie for Marriage Story or Divorce Story or whatever the heck it is. This is not a good precedent. Every streaming service will now have a release every year and compete for things that are not seen by anyone but their subscribers. Another way to make money I guess. So is it also going to compete for Emmys?

ReplyDeleteI love how Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie get nominated for Bombshell while Hollywood and the press continue to write articles trashing the women who actually brought down Roger Ailes. Hollywood is a just a gigantic steaming turd of hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteI’ve only seen two films on the list JoJo Rabbit and The Irishman. JoJo Rabbit was the better film. The Irishman dragged. No standout performances in either of them. The votes are probably rigged well in advance, and while they have too many old geezers with the voting rights, the best films and performances rarely win and few make it to the nomination stage. It’s more of a pat on the back for the same inner circle.

ReplyDeleteI think Phoenix is a lock for Best Actor, and Zellweger too, but she could get upset. Best Picture is hard to say, 1917 or Once upon a time... I think this is Brad's year to win and he should! He was phenomenal and stole the whole movie from Leo. I'm guessing Laura Dern will win, a first for Netflix!

ReplyDeleteI saw only one film in a theater this year; THE IRISHMAN. I read the book when it came out and was shocked I had never heard of Sheeran. Been away from NYC for a long time. Came back for a couple of weeks and went to see it with my best friend of many decades. She slept through the entire thing. I realized it was the last time I would see the ensemble. Made me super sad.
ReplyDeleteI realize this was on Netflix, and not considered a movie-movie, but Mindhunter mesmerized me this year. I had never heard of Holt McCallany nor Cameron Britton, but they blew me out of the water with their performances. If Scorsese ever decides to do a film about Vincent 'Chin' Gigante, Holt McCallany is his guy. Perfect match. Holt's mom, by the way, was the late, great goddess singer Julie Wilson! The only award-winning performances I watched this last year. Joe Pesci is my all time fave, though. He was great.
Parasite for sure & The Lighthouse was amazing. I liked Joker, that's it.
ReplyDeleteI saw 1917 in the theater this weekend and it was really good. I'm not a big war movie but I was impressed that it was one long continuous shot. I thought it made the movie mesmerizing. It also helped that Andrew Scott had a part in it. I'd watch him watch paint dry.

Little Women didn’t deserve a best picture nod but the Academy loves Gerwig & Baumbach, big surprise. Gerwig never had to work hard to get to the directors chair w/all the unprecedented additional perks. Definitely helps being an established, oscar nom’d director’s muse (& side chick during ur breakout role ofc, but thats another story for another day undermining her pro-woman BS).
