Four For Friday - Complicit

Way back in the day at about the same time there were "baby groupies," this mogul decided he wanted the same for himself. The thing is though, there were no screaming underage boys who were desperate to sleep with him. So, he got some help. He had asked around to many of the people on his label and most, thankfully said no. He also had to be discreet about it because not that many people knew he was gay. At that time he was still pretending to be straight with several of his clients including an at that time A- list singer who this mogul would go to parties with and do more indulging with the drugs than the 14 and 15 year old girls on offer.

Instead he got this A list female singer who was probably the lesser known of a group of women who roughly had the same style and seemed to be cut from the same mold. This A list singer attracted a more diverse crowd and she was able to pick through her fans and find a few dozen teen boys who would do anything she asked of them. Considering what was done to them, she probably should have felt horror or shame, but she didn't.

  8. The woman was in a girl group, so cant be cher

  9. FLorence Ballard of the Supremes for the " group of women who roughly had the same style and seemed to be cut from the same mold"

Diverse makes me think this is also a woman of color

  10. How is Cher a lesser known singer in a certain genre? That does not fit.

  12. "this A list female singer who was probably the lesser known of a group of women who roughly had the same style" definitely rules out Cher. She's never been the lesser-known anything. Likewise not Linda Ronstadt, who in her prime was the top female singer in pop music.

Maybe someone on Geffen Records in the 80s or 90s?

  13. The group of women he was talking about has to be the school of singers from that era that were part of the Canyon, or their East Coast equivalents. - Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Carole King, Carly Simon, Bonnie Raitt.

Mitchell, Ronstadt and Harris were signed to Asylum, Geffen's label.

  14. Way back in the day is when? to me sounds like 60 or 70s? as back in the day is often 80s and 90s

  15. Carly Simon? She and Geffen had an affair.

  16. Geffen is in here....but who's the Lady Monster?!
Bigger mystery is... people believed Geffen is straight?!

  17. Yea, this is 70s. By 1981, Asylum was mostly defunct, with the artists all merged into Elektra Records. And by then Geffen was wealthy enough to be attracting young guys with his money and clout.

BTW, does everyone know that Joni's "Free Man In Paris" is about Geffen?

  18. Geffen gave up the beards a LONG time ago.

  19. How about Clive Davis for the mogul and Janis Joplin for the singer.

  20. the first singer is cher. there's 2 singers in the blind. and that pig geffen. she did date him in the 70s.

  21. The Pointer Sisters? Anita or Bonnie?

  22. It probably can't be Clive, he was married from 1956 - 1965, and again from 1965-1985

  23. Cher never did drugs, though, so I can't see her as the first singer taking in tons of drugs

    1. Cher was at a party with one of the guys from Average White Band when he died of an overdose. Just because someone says they never did drugs doesn't mean it's true. Geffen has said Cher was the only woman he ever loved.

  24. @Moose, yes was just about to mention that.

  25. 1 geffen

2 Cher dated Geffen for an extended time and was A-. She had no problem marrying Gregg Allman, so the drug part points to enabler

3 a supreme not named Diana? A member of Labelle not named Patti?

  26. Cher is the first singer and Laura Nyro is the second.
The blind doesn't state that the singer indulged in anything, just that they were present.

Nyro's fans were trippier, I guess.
The past tense was used for how she might have felt, but didn't.

    1. I think third one is Linda Ronstadt. People used to lump her, Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell together a lot.

    2. Linda Rondstadt was never lumped in with anyone. She was one of the biggest singers in the world.

  29. Cher liked underage boys herself, and dated a lot of druggies at one time. The mogul was the one using drugs. This was the seventies, when baby groupies were out in the open. The 80s brought AIDS and a higher drinking age, putting the end to it in public. I think he did "date" Laura Nyro though.

  34. Would the Runaways fit for this? Cherie Currie?

  35. I was thinking Phil Spector too. His "Wall Of Sound" attracted many people "Way back in the day"

  36. I just googled "Ba6y Groupies".
Sable Sheilds better known as Sable Starr pops up.
Queen of the groupie scene in the 70s.
Hung out with, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, David Bowie and Marc Boland.
    Her favourite was zJimmy Page.

Claimed to have lost her virginity at 12.

Looks like Almost Famous could have been modeled on her.

David Geffen of course and as much as it pains me to say it I believe the woman who assisted him was Joni Mitchell.

  39. It is not Phil Spector. I have read volumes on him, and he has always been straight.

  40. This sounds like P. Daddy and J.Lo. Don’t know who the second singer was.

  41. Cher has to be involved in this in some way. Anthony Kiedis has said that his Dad was the drug dealer to the stars and that Cher was his "babysitter" and he lost his virginity to her at a very young age. She clearly was an adult who should have known better-unless she was also a hooker. Or a person who preyed on children.

  42. Mogul: Geffen
    Singer 1 (dated): Cher
    Singer 2 Laura Nyro

I'm thinking, "group of women, roughly same style, cut from same mold", would be, Carly Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro. Laura being A list but lesser known of the group. Also, seems to be speaking past tense in how she should have felt. Laura is the only one in the group that is deceased.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Would Joni Mitchell have fan boys who'd do anything for her?
    Nyro seems more likely.

  44. Cher most certainly did do drugs back in the day.
