Your Turn
So, do you remember back in the day when there were like three networks and no cable? Yeah, well I remember that if you ever wanted to watch cartoons the only time to do it really was on Saturday mornings. Oh, sure some UHF station might show some before you went to school, but that wasn't any fun because you kept looking at the clock so you wouldn't be late. Now, with cable and videos and DVD's, you can watch cartoons 24/7. I still think the old ones are the best and I will find myself watching Boomerang late at night watching Scooby Doo cartoons from like 40 years ago. Maybe you like the newer cartoons and the old ones are too cheesy. So, today. Your favorite cartoon of all time.

Favorite of all time is probably The Animaniacs, which I watched in college. I can watch it now and still laugh. But my sentimental favorite is probably Scooby Doo. I had a crush on Shaggy.
ReplyDeleteWhile the old Looney Tunes and MGM cartoons were great (still love those "House of Tomorrow" and "Farm of Tomorrow" cartoons), my absolute nostalgic favorite is Scooby Doo (the first series "Where Are You" and the 2nd one with all the "famous guest stars" - NO SCRAPPY DOO). I can't help it - I LOVED those cartoons, even with the crappy animation and the same storyline over and over again.
ReplyDeleteed, i wanted gargamel to capture and kill every smurf. i've gotten "slightly" better now due to therapy, but i can't watch them for more than five minutes, or i'll relapse into that dark abyss. just kidding, but i never liked the little blue people.

My cartoon era was Saturday mornings in the late 70's, but I loved the older stuff then, too.
Flintsones and original Looney Tunes. I am crazy enough to own an animation cel from my favorite Looney Tunes, "Feed the Kitty", the cartoon where the bulldog, Marc Anthony, hides the kitten he found from his owner.

I still remember watching The Flintstones on my bff's new color TV. I liked The Flintstones and Jetsons.

saturday mornings used to be a magical time, every kid in the country glued to the tv in their jammies until noon or until your mom threw you out of the house.
in comparison sunday mornings sucked ass, all we had was davey & goliath, but we watched it.

ReplyDeleteThough I'd have to say the Tiny Toon Adventures/Animaniacs! hour block we had for awhile was tons better than the 2 hours of afternoon Disney. (Though I still wish I had a copy of the Pop Top Cult episode of Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers.)
And I gave up my early childhood singing career because of Muppet Babies (choir practice was on Saturday mornings).

Even though they were made decades before I was born, I like the Silly Symphonies and Merrie Melodies cartoons. I was little and didn't really get the racial stuff, but I did like the dancing movie stars, I even recognized a couple of them, like Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. There was a gambling squirrel, which I really liked, but can never find now.

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Sweden, and any Swede from my generation (born in the 70's) knows that WATCHING CARTOONS IS A SPECIAL OCCASION, and it only happens on Tuesday nights and Christmas eve! It's different now, of course, kids there now have all the same TV shows you guys do, but when I was little, there was cartoons on TV on Tuesday nights - "Animated Pearls" (as in "gems") and it was most always Tom & Jerry. On Christmas Eve, which is when Swedes celebrate Christmas, there was a Disney Special on. Still is, every year, at 3 pm, and all of Sweden STOPS. Everyone has to watch Donald Duck & Friends. There were short segments from different Disney movies, like the dress-making scene from Cinderella, an old Donald Duck/ Mickey Mouse/ Goofy segment where they go camping, The spaghetti scene from "Lady and the Vagabond", etc. My favourite was always "Ferdinand". You know, the bull who doesn't want to fight the toreador, but would rather sit underneath his oak tree and smell the flowers. Love it.

Hated almost all other cartoons though. Was more of a Sesame Street or Electric Company kid.
OH!!!! And from a totally creepy factor .. a fave was Clutch Cargo ... those lips! I had nightmares about those! I think they showed it on "Garfield Goose" or the show with Ray Rayner and Cuddly Duddly on WGN. [I grew up in West Suburban Chicago in the early 70s.]

smurfs, strawberry shortcake (i would call her traberry shortcake and had everything traberry hehehe), rainbow bright, gloworms and my little pony when that finally came out.
ReplyDeletesmurfs 1st and formost...oh there was also some pink and white dog (something puppy) which i could only rent from the video store as a beta cassette (and as a silly child I would keep renting it over and over hoping my vcr would finally take it), fraggle rock and the gummy bears.
believe it or not, I didn't watch much tv.
one last fav was watching loony toons early saturday morning and my dad and i would eat jif peanut butter on toast like it was our religion.
ahhhhh good memories.
after this post, you will mostly notice that i am an 80s child.

oh btw guys...my "grandpa" Bob (long story) was the original creater and artist for Tom and Jerry. I wish I wasn't lazy and could figure out how to scan and import the originals into my post so you all could see what they looked like. the mouse ended up the same but the cat is somewhat different.

Definitely the Flintstones, and incredibly I got many of the jokes and references.
ReplyDeleteAlso loved Tom & Jerry, and one of the few people who liked the Chuck Jones era since he basically turned the show into a more back-and-forth version of the Coyote and Roadrunner.
I grew up in New England and somehow we got tons of anime from Japan. I LOVED Starblazers and Force 5. Starblazers is on DVD now but I would give anything for Force 5 on DVD, or at least Grandizer.

Tiny Toons and Animaniacs are my all-time favorite cartoons, and the ones that I mourned when they were taken off the air. Batman is up there too. Though I enjoyed Smurfs, Muppet Babies, Thundercats, He-Man and She-Ra, and the other assorted cheesy 80s cartoons at the time, I've found that they are ruined when I try to watch them now as an adult. Only Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and Batman have stood the test of time.

Bugs Bunny, hands down. A close second is the rest of the Loony Tunes gang. I find myself quoting Foghorn Leghorn and Daffy Duck a lot as an adult, inexplicably. I also liked the Flinstones. Fred Flinstone looked like my dad. And I liked Popeye. And I liked Scooby Doo before his cousin Scrappy.

ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I watched the hell out of Scooby-Doo, Fantastic Four, The Smurfs, Popeye, the Flintstones, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Sylvester and Tweety, Tom and Jerry, various Yogi Bear shows, Super Friends, Captain Caaaaavemaaaaan and He-Man (WTF?).
How can you pick just one? And why the hell did I watch so much TV? Cripes. No wonder my brain is rotted.
Katja--Wonderama was filmed in NY--if you saw it in DC, I guess it was either National or East Coast.
ReplyDeleteI had a friend whose family sent away for tickets years in advance.
When the tickets finally came, her youngest brother wasn't old enough to go, so they took me. Then when I got picked to do something om the show & the 3 kids in her family didn't, they all stopped talking to me! *Sigh*--pre VCR days--I wish I had a copy.

ReplyDeleteprincess-- i remember having all the little dolls, but i lost strawberry (i blame my evil older brother-i know it was him, that bastard was out to get me), so one of my aunts went out to replace it and got me a doll called Cherry Merry Muffin instead. I was heartbroken, but i acted like i loved it (i was eager to please as a child). My best friend totally made me feel like crap when she saw my dumb replacement doll. I was traumatized.
Looking back, I'd trade my adult problems for my childhood ones in as heartbeat.
deity2- Oh wow that's so awesome. I'm going to walmart this weekend for sure! And also on the show a few times was rodney dangerfield. i cant rememeber what character he played, but i loved the voice of bobby's mom (dontchaknow). Is the guy you mentioned the one who plays "uncle ted"? the script for that show was so brilliant to me, even at all of 8 years of age. I even still remember some of the episode songs, like "animals dont wear underpants", etc. Gotta find those DVDs.

I'm trying to think about a book I read where a little boy wanted to be on a cowboy games show really bad and then his mom forgot to pick him up. I think game shows are just traumatizing vehicles of doom. To much adrenaline.
I'm only 37, but when I was a kid, I would see these really old "Follow the Bouncing Ball" sing-along cartoons. Does anybody else remember them? They would use songs like "This Land is Your Land," and they were long and epic.
ReplyDeleteI totally grew up on Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera. And I LOVED "Battle of the Planets (G-Force)."
But my all-time favorite has to be The Simpsons. South Park is a current favorite as well.

I loved those floating ball cartoons! The Frito Bandito commercial I mentioned above had a floating ball. I was going to mention it but forgot about it completley by the time I watched 15 other commercials. I'm glad you brought it up! I'm going back to watch more old tv ads!

Bugs Bunny. I used to get up at 4:30 every morning in high school so I could watch two shows: Breakfast Time on FX and Bugs Bunny on TNT.

As for what I actually watched when I was young, Scooby Doo, the Flintstones or the Jetsons win hands down. As for my favorite old cartoons, I love the Tex Avery "Home of Tomorrow" bit. Pretty much any Tex Avery or old Looney Toons is great.

ReplyDeleteI lived in Brooklyn until I was 12, & then moved to Nassau County.
Yes--maybe in Russia they are still watching 35 year old Wonderama episodes--I don't know where I would find mine. The cool thing was they filmed a commercial that day and scanned the whole audience, so for about 1 year everytime they showed the commercial, there I was!
Anyway it was during the Nixon years, & they interviewed kids about what they would do if they were president instead--I remember going on about not selling our wheat to other countries when we had hungry & a bunch of other stuff, & I guess it was educated enough to say on tv!
The sad thing is my grandmother had passed away a few months before, & my father went to religious services twice a day and missed it.
I seem to remember cartoons on Saturday only going until about noon--after Fat Albert we would go outside. Until then we were glued to the tv. I didn't even like Fat Albert, but it was a cartoon, & we watched it.
I loved the Magic Garden but they never said my name at the beginning! And my brothers went on Wonderama and brought me back a laquered minibagel necklace that had googly eyes glued to it. The 70s were weird.

There are some old Disney cartoon where the artist is drawing stuff and I think Goofy was in it...it was good.
The Wonderful World of Disney. 6:00pm on Sunday night. Pooh...Jungle Book, whatever it was, I watched it.
I have guilt for these because they aren't really what I wanted my kids to watch, but...I like Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Billy and Mandy, CatDog, Rin and Stimpy. Fairly Oddparents(Once, Timmy's dad was checking on sick Timmy. He said, "You are hot and green, those are the symptoms of steamed broccoli!" It was really funny when he said it.
The 70's were weird, why these kids think that retro is cool I'll never understand. The clothes were, are and always will be ugly!

Adrian-I grew up on the border of East Meadow & Levittown. I went to Clarke HS. All the arenas have corporate sponsors...they'll always be Westbury Music Fair and Jones Beach Theater to me. :)

ReplyDeleteI always liked those animated versions of live-action shows - I think the Brady Bunch and the Patridge Family both had them. Same as the nighttime version, except the Greg and Marcia and Peter would all be able to jump over buildings, or something.

One of my earliest memories was crawling down the hallway after bedtime and hiding beside the large chair in our livingroom while my brother got to stay up to watch The Flintstones. Can't say the appeal stayed with me through the years, though.
Wow Shakey-- I didn't think anyone remembered Cecil & Beany. We had a Cecil stuffed doll that came with little hats and outfits to dress up.

...it was a little one-off from the 1960's that aired along with the Tom and Jerry cartoons. It was called "The Dot and the Line: a Romance in Lower Mathematics." Just the cutest thing ever.
