Have You Seen This Guy?

I love these kinds of stories. A man and his two year old daughter were on a ship that is moored at South Street Seaport in New York City. The daughter fell into the East River and before the dad could get in the water, a mysterious Frenchman jumped into the water and saved the two year old girl. When she was safe, the girl's father was looking for the man but he had disappeared. Nowhere to be found. He is the younger guy on the right side of the picture.

To just immediately jump into the water and think about someone other than yourself is amazing. How many other people were there and didn't do anything, but this guy beat the girl's dad into the water. Incredible.

  1. God bless him.
The world needs more of this kind of courage.

  2. Wow, the papers have it all wrong then, they have it as the father jumping in to save his daughter here.

Some people 'freeze' when they see danger or anything out of the ordinary. That being said, I would have disappeared after I saved the little girl too. He is to be commended.

  4. @MontanaMarriot: that's how it was reported yesterday in the (television) news here.

Meanwhile, in Australia, a 68-year-old man died while trying to save his two sons who had been hit by strong waves. :(

  6. Probably the NY Post and Fox news left out the mysterious Frenchman angle because they still hate the French! lol

If he was so quick, how do we know he was French? He's kind of hunky, though.

  8. The dad was checking his digital camera & didn't notice the girl fell in. The French guy was obviously paying more attention to a 2 year old walking up the gang plank by herself.

I saw this last night on the Inside Edition. It did show the father going into the water and having his little girl on top of him. I believe the mystery man got into the water afterwards to help. The little girl looked so calm.

  10. I've noticed these days that parents don't seem to hold their toddlers' hands anymore! What's up with that???

  11. Ch. 5 news (Fox) had the dad on last night. Definitely said the Frenchman was in the water first. Wants to find him and thank him in person.

Well, because he was wearing a beret and carrying a baguette, of course!

  14. This is getting ridiculously overplayed here in the city, specially by the Daily News. The father did not get to her first, the tourist who disappeared into the taxi did. They keep calling the father a hero. He's the one who responsible for her falling in! If you have a 2 year old (heck, a child any age), you never let them out of your sight, specially in public places, and even more specially, on a gall plank or A BOAT.

Exactly, you can't criticize other people for not doing anything (well, you CAN, it's your blog LOL,) you never know how you're going to react in an emergency. Everyone WANTS to believe they'd do the courageous thing asap but like Melody said, you can totally freeze up. I remember seeing a guy get hit by a car - my immediate reaction was to cover my eyes and scream "No!!!" Some help I was...LOL (the guy was fine, BTW.)

I'll never forget when my cousin was about a year & a half, she fell into my grandmother's pool. My uncle, her dad, was up and in that pool before any of us knew she'd fallen in. SO scary, but my cousin only started crying when everyone was freaking out around her LOL. She's fine too, BTW. LOL ;P

  19. I think it makes a HUGE difference that it's against the law in Europe *not* to help someone in these situations.

Here in the United States, we are such a litigious country that we will sue anyone and everyone. Who wants to help people if we will get sued for it if something goes wrong (or not satisfactorily done)?

  20. janele, after a winter New York plane crash, there were several incidents of regular, ol' Amurkins (who weren't compelled by law) hopping in deadly freezing water to haul out people from the drink.

That said, it would have been easy for the French guy to just say he wasn't looking. Instead, he took action and saved a child's life.

And I really can't bring myself to judge the father. Shock and terror will give the most courageous person pause. In some cases, a stranger would be able to act faster than a parent.

  21. Yea I know him, it's Jake Gyllenhaal. In between filming scenes he heard cries & jumped into the water and saved a few lives.
