Joss Whedon Responds To Buffy Movie News

When Warner Brothers announced they were going to make a Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie you would think they would give the television creator, Joss Whedon a call. Well, you would be wrong. Joss though, shows you why he is so great in this e-mail he sent E! about his reaction to the movie and being excluded.

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER." Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

  1. Joss Whedon wasn't just the televison creator of BtVS, he also wrote the screenplay for the original movie, that was then butchered by the director.

  3. Ironic, a movie from a show that came from a movie. Oh, that just made me dizzy. Hollywood is soooo original lately.

  4. *sigh* Love Josh and love when once every blue moon we hear something honest and real out of Hollywood.

He also wrote a hillarious open letter to buying the Terminator franchise awhile ago.

  9. I just can't wrap my mind around anyone else being Buffy. BTW, I read recenty that SMG was able to tape an entire episode in one take and not miss any lines. That just blows my mind.

  10. He's fantastic, got his start writing for Roseanne.
Xander and Spike are still 2 of my favorite characters strictly for some of the lines they uttered.

  11. Love hearing from Joss. I too am tired of Hollyweird raping our childhood. Granted Buffy was in my children's childhood, but that was the great thing a/b Buffy...it was adored by all ages.

I love all things from Whedonverse. Joss remains supreme.

  12. Buffy was one of my ALL TIME favorite television shows. It kills me to think what someone else might do to the characters. And other actors playing those characters???? Heresy! Say what you will about Mr. Can't Keep It in His Pants Boreanez - he is Angel. Period. I think I'll just get out my DVDs and watch them again.

  13. In my opinion, ALL movies would be better if Joss had a hand in making them. The suits at Warner Bros. are idiots for leaving him out of this. Joss's voice (for lack of a better word) is so strong in his work that hardcore fans can actually tell what episodes were written by him and which were written by his writing staff. He's just. that. good.

  17. I liked the original Buffy movie.
It had so many quotable lines.
    PeeWeeHerman as a onearmed villian!
    Probably all written by Joss.
If it's on anywhere on the tube, we leave it on.And laff.
    What's wrong with HWood!
Why would they leave him out of the loop on this one?
    Idiots.

  19. I frickin love Buffy and Angel... SMG made the character - and I had seen the movie prior to the show.

MCH I highly recommended you watch the show. The first season is iffy but season 2 is my fave.

    Best line from Spike
Buffy: Spike, what are you doing here, in 5 words or less
    Spike: Out for a walk.....bitch
