Gordon Ramsay Heads To QVC

My mother loves QVC. She loves it so much that back in the day we had one of those monster big screen televisions that took like 6 people to get in the house but was still probably only like a 40 something inch screen. Anyway, she would leave it on all day and eventually the QVC logo was burned into the bottom right of the screen. Seriously. So, if you were watching a program that had graphics like a football game and they put the score in the lower right, the only thing you could see was QVC.

Well, yesterday she told me that Gordon Ramsay had been on her show. When my mom refers to her show she is usually referring to The View or Ellen but sometimes it means Today's Special Value on QVC. I can't tell you the number of times she has stared at the television at 9pm just waiting to hear what Today's Special Value is going to be. When I am drunk enough I usually tell her something to the effect of it only being 9pm so they actually have two special values today. This is usually met with some kind of remark about letting me live in the house for free.

Anyway, all day yesterday Gordon Ramsay was selling some cookware set of his and looked extremely uncomfortable. Kind of like, I cannot believe I have come to such a low point in my career that I am having to sell things on a cable channel. Hey, he probably made a ton of money for doing it, but it does kind of cheapen the Gordon mystique doesn't it?

  1. I am in no way shape or form a QVC shopper, but tons of HUGE people sell their crap on it: Designers, Martha Stewart, Emeril, Rachel Zoe, etc. I don't think this is a step down for Ramsey. Rather, it's boosting his brand.

  2. It's a good place for a "chef" that was caught getting food delivered to his restaurant to serve customers.

  3. Are any of his shows any good? I tend to stay away of obvious hotheads, and every time there is a commercial for his show, I cringe, for he's swearing up a storm and throwing things around.

Would rather watch Paula Abdul's Planet of magical faes.

What's that? Do tell. I've never heard that before.

  5. What? Gordon had mystique? I didn't realize that and I watch Hell's Kitchen.

I don't think Gordon is comfortable just being a normal person. It's easier to be the screaming, cursing character he plays on TV than to show real feelings.

  6. That isn't a bad price. I wouldn't get nonstick, though.

  7. Can you imagine the delay they had to have on that program in case he lost it? Priceless.

  8. What Susan said. Didn't Mariah sell some of her stuff on QVC, too? No biggie - I think they stand to rake in some major dough.

  9. He's a total sellout, but I can't honestly fault him for it. You gotta make hay while the sun shines. His popularity probably peaked about a year or so ago. He needs to cash in while he can. In a few years most non-foodies will just remember him as that guy who used to have some shows where he screamed at people. All reality people, "celebrity" chefs included, need to put $ in the bank whenever the opportunity presents itself.

  10. He has a line for k-Mart as well. The commercial is pretty funny.

Makes sense. Todd English has a line of cookware on HSN, as does Wolfgang Puck. It's an easy way to make money while still somewhat involved with what made you famous.

These fashion/cookware lines on the shopping networks are no joke. Lots of big names have them: J-Lo, Queen Latifah, Serena Williams. Mary J. Blige made a mint with her My Life fragrance. And because there's not middle men or store overhead to pay, the endorsers make tons of cash.

  12. Queen Latifah was just on a night or two ago. And I'll be the first to admit that whenever I see Isaak Mizrahi (sp?) I watch it just to watch him.

And I have to admit that lately I've been getting sucked into watching QVC and HSN and I actually made a purchase - Mally cosmetics. Just got them delivered 2 days ago and so far I'm really liking them.

  13. So, Enty, was your mom a fan of Jeanne Bice?

That is a good price, but I have no idea if his stuff is any good or not?
I have never bought anything off QVC before but every other celeb chef sells their stuff pretty much where they can, so I don't think it's a big deal.

  14. Jeanne Bice would have kicked him in the Nutsack and blamed it on menopause.
