Anne Hathaway Turned Down Knocked Up Because Of Birth Scene

When Allure interviewed Anne Hathaway she was in the middle of that Les Mis diet that saw her only eating radishes and hummus. Nothing else. Can you imagine eating nothing else until you lose enough weight to look like you are dying of TB? Anyway, in the interview, Anne talked about turning down the role for Knocked Up. She started blabbering about craft and blah blah and said it all came down to the giving birth scene. "I thought about that [director] Judd [Apatow] was right to include the shot. I didn't disagree with the shot. My issue with it was that having not experienced motherhood myself, I didn't know how I was gonna feel on the other side about giving birth. Because giving birth involves another human being, I didn't feel it was fair for me to make that call for myself."

What is she saying here? That because she had not given birth it would be shortchanging her experience when she does give birth? Huh? She also said it was not fair for her to make that call for herself. Who is going to make that call? I blame the radishes for her answer.

It's called being a chick, Enty.

  3. Yes, her brain was starved and she couldn't get it to function properly...if it was she would have worn a wig instead of cutting her hair..

  4. I thought the headline indicated she had been turned down pregnant for sex because she threw such a bad tantrum when she was born.

  5. WHAT is she even talking about? I read this religiously. [[first post]]

  6. I think her reasoning for turning the film down was strange, but it sounds more like a public "Bitch, sit DOWN" Katherine Heigl, like she wants her to know who threw her the scraps.

    1. Sarah you are right. This has nothin to do with "craft" but a good, old fashioned, passive aggressive bitch slap to heigl.

  7. It's a strange rationale but I think she is trying to say that she doesn't want her future children traumatized by the existence of film of their Mom giving birth. There's a reason we don't remember much from those first few years of life. Most of the details are pretty disgusting.

  8. This is really old news and has been under the trivia section of Knocked Up on IMDb for ages. Just saying... I love Judd Apatow shows/movies.

I wonder why she is bringing it up again?

I think she was saying she couldn't be true to the experience, because she's never experienced it for herself and would feel she was shortchanging the scene. It goes back to the whole craft blah blah blah.

I remember one of my acting teachers from college telling us we couldn't fully give ourselves to an emotion if we'd never experienced it for ourselves.

So this is probably what she's talking about.

  11. pure and utter BS...she is not being honest...

  12. I think what @The Fame Whore said is correct.

This sounds like a whole lotta "craft" BS.

  13. Actresses are just kooky. It is no different when Natalie Portman said she turned down Doubt becuase she couldn't wrap her head around the character being celibate.

ohhhh your all so deep. Bitches please, its play acting and its fun.

Oh, geez, another not-so-great actress blathering on about her "craft." Get real.

A talented actress can realistically portray all kinds of things they've never experienced, including giving birth. Charlize Theron, to my knowledge, has never been either a lesbian, a prostitute, or a serial killer, but she won an Oscar for playing one. Sally Field doesn't have MPD, but watching her play Sybil is riveting. Shoot, "Nine Months" was a crap movie, but Julianne Moore gave a VERY realistic performance of a woman giving birth, before she had ever had kids IRL. Anne is just that drama kid geek who thinks she's much, much more talented than she really is and likes to pretend that acting is some kind of higher calling.

  15. I'll only do a killing scene after killing somebody.

Why didn't she get TB instead of dieting to lose the weight for Miserables?

I (think I) like Hathaway, but this is a load of bullshit.

  16. @ashleyguz - To be fair, wouldn't we all bitch slap Heigl if we had the opportunity?

  17. How hard is it to put a pile of clothes on and pretend to be someone else? And I agree about it being a bitch-slap at Ms Heigl. It’s not the first time she’s been mean about other people. Bitch needs to stitch her mouth up.

  18. I think she's basically admitting that she couldn't realistically fake a birth scene on film, for whatever reason. That she didn't want to be called out by moms for doing a bad job. Fair enough.

I like Anne, but I cannot deal with actors who get too much into that whole 'craft' BS. It's not surgery, it's acting. Yes, it's hard to stand around for an hour waiting for a scene to get set up, then repeat the same one line 20 times so it can be caught from assorted camera angles, but you aren't building a bridge across a canyon and no one is going to die if your work isn't perfect.

Okay, I laughed. In one short question, you just bitch-slapped Ms. Hathaway.

    Nicely done.

  20. She's a cunt. I'm glad she "turned it down" 'cause she would have ruined it for me. Can't stand her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. She probably just felt that she was above doing a Judd Apatow film. And above working with Seth R. Because she only takes on classy projects. And only works with classy people.

I used to think she was cool, but she's been grating on my nerves lately. And I don't think her diet is to blame...

  22. i think shes read 'Acting Without Acting' one too many times. ITS CALLED ACTING, NOT REMEMBERING!!!!

  23. She ate apples and had one protein shake for 16 days. Hummus is too loaded with fat & carbs.

  24. Shoot, I'm no actress and I've never given birth either but I'm pretty sure I could fake it for a movie since I've watched what seems like 1000+ birthing scenes in movies. And eeeeevery one is the same. "*puff puff puff* Oooooh!" Screw up face, grasp thighs, fall back against the pillow looking exhausted. "Oh I can't do it! I can't do it!" Roll head back and forth on pillow. "Yes you can, you're going GREAT! You're almost there!" "puff puff puff OOOOOOH!" *pop* Fall back on pillow to the exclamations and praise of all in attendance.

    It's just not that hard.

  25. This is the kind of absolute crap actors say when they think they are important, special, and actually make a difference in the world, but in reality they are shallow, shortsighted, egotistical, and too damn stupid to be able to make a sensible comment. It goes by many names, Wahlbergitis is how most know it.

I can't stand her. She's going to ruin catwoman and Les Miserables. I'm going to look at pictures of Michelle Pfeiffer and Natalie Dormer before I go so I can just pretend that a proper actress was cast. I think Natalie Dormer would have been an AMAZING catwoman.

  27. This reminds me of the Olivier-Hoffman "Try Acting" story.

This sounds more like Anne coming up with an excuse on the fly instead of saying she wasn't interested in the role.

Even if she is blowing smoke, doesn't make her a cunt or any worse than the rest of Hollyweird.

  29. There's nothing more tedious than hearing actors talk about their craft.

I read on Yahoo that Hathaway was allegedly on a 500 calorie a day diet-- sounds dangerous!

  30. "There's nothing more tedious than hearing actors talk about their craft."

    You have no idea...

("Craft" is actually a valid concept within the profession. But we really shouldn't blabber about it in interviews with civilians.)

  31. @Christina: I like your choice of Natalie dormer for catwoman!!

What are actors supposed to talk about in interviews? The weather? Their grandma's apple pie recipe? How they're still looking for just the right pen to do their crossword puzzle?

Do we expect them not to talk at all? Because if that's the case, that makes all gossip blogs (including this one) useless.

So what are the expectations for someone getting paid millions to be someone else for a few weeks?

  33. Has Katherine even ever had a baby? Maybe she's just being self righteous like, I had craft issues. I felt unethical trying to draw from an experience I've never had. Yet Katherine had no problem doing so. Apparently she doesn't mind compromising her craft."

The last sentence was as if she was saying she was unchosen by someone who could make that choice for her. 'Sorry lady, but this character doesn't have a rod up her ass. Just a baby in her belly. Be off with you, uptight princess.'

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't see how this is a big deal. Anyone can turn down any job they don't want, for any reason. Why would actors be any different?

    ReplyDelete
  35. So blame her for Katherine Heigl's success. "Everybody throw paper balls at Anne Hathaway's head..."

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous12:30 PM

She's just saying she could have done that movie if she had wanted to but didn't want to do the birth scene because it was gross. She's looking for an oscar worthy role, not a judd apatow stoner comedy. She's a climber, a perfectionist, a down and dirty funny birth scene isn't her style.

    ReplyDelete
  37. They tell a different story in the audio commentary for the movie. They didn't mention Hathaway by name, and it's true that other actresses were considered, but they explain they couldn't get an actress to play the part because nobody, apart from Heigl, was willing to play opposite to Seth Rogen, who was still chubby at the time and was virtually unknown.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I TOTALLY agree with Texshan! MANY actors portray characters with experiences they have not had. Heck, writers do it too! I wrote about birth before I gave birth. She is just being an idiot.

  39. Does anyone remember what she was doing around the time of knocked up? And my thoughts on this?? Rich bitch problems lol I like knocked up and Anne btw but I'm glad she didn't do it

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh shut up Anne. You don't have to experience it to peform it. That's why it's called acting. The greatest actors are great, because their able to be a character without having experience it. Do you think Russel Crowe was a Gladiator in real life? Were you really Catwoman in real life? Sit your ass down biatch.

  41. While I think her reasoning is lame and a lie (she really didn't want to do it because of that one shot, come on, we all know what shot that is-- and I'm sorry but I am pretty positive that shot was actually of KH anyway! but it was pretty in your face) I do have to kind of commend her for publicly bitch-slapping KH. Knocked Up is what put the idea in KH's head that she is anything better than a mid-level actor on a mid-level, retread of a retread show who was cute. Emphasis on was-- KH has aged like crazy. Looking at early Grey's it looks like she's 20 yrs older now.

But then again AH you are stupid bc you had a chance to have Adam Scott that close to your lady business and you handed it to Heigl. I would probably pay for that chance! Then again AH isn't known for her taste in men.

    ReplyDelete
  42. oh and sorry for the double post but Natalie Dormer as Catwoman? WTF? Unless the catwoman costume has been redesigned to only show the left side of catwoman's face and also show lots of side cleavage... that would not work!
