Today's Blind Items - Not Again

This former A list female singer thought she had it made. It didn't start out that way for her and didn't end that way for her, but there was a short period of time where she thought she was going to be on top of the world forever. Back when she was starting out she had a voice and a demo tape. She was lucky enough to have a guy hear it and the next thing you know she was meeting with some of the biggest producers in the music industry. Just because it is not acting does not mean there is not a casting couch. The producers told her they could get her with some great writers and other singers and make her a star, but what was she going to do for them? For a year she had to trade sex with producers for recording time and writers for songs and rappers for guest appearances. In a manuscript she is shopping right now she says that she had to have sex with over 50 different guys to make her first record. She said that if she didn't, they would have just found someone with just as much talent who was willing to have sex, so she did it. After her first record was a huge success, she thought that life was over and that she would have some clout. Nope. She did not have to have sex as much, but because the record company controlled her, the executives there said they were not sure if they were going to keep using her or go in another direction. That resulted in a long term relationship with three men at the record company who protected her from everyone else but also expected her to be on call for them 24 hours a day. They also got her hooked on coke and by the time she finished recording and went on tour she said that weeks would go by in blur. When it came time for her next record, she said she was numb and spent most days trying to sleep off the nights before. Not only the drugs but also the memories. She would record and have sex, often with all three of the men in the same night but never at the same time. She could not go on any longer and she told them that. She thought because she had so many hits and sold so many records that she would be immune like she had seen from some of the other females she worked with. Nope. They gave her a chance to change her mind, but our singer said not again. The next thing you know she was dropped and went from A list to, "who?" almost overnight. She blew through all her money trying to record her own album, but it sounded nothing like her other records and did awful. For years she tried to do it on her own but just was locked out. Then she made a call and said she wanted back in again. All these years later and she has a brand new anticipated record coming out that features lots of great producers, guest singers and she says she had to do it because she needed to live. She thinks she can make enough from the sales and from touring to live on and never have to go through the process ever again.

  1. I ws thinking Ashanti too, but was she A-list?

  2. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I feel bad for the gentlemen whose only sexual outlet is to have sex with people who are being forced into sex. It's sad if it's a bunch of agricultural workers pulling a train on a woman shackled to a bed in a bordello, and it's sad when it's an aging paunchy mid-level A&R exec putting the moves on a desperate young girl.

As for guesses, ... who sounds totally different on later releases than on earlier ones? I'm drawing a blank. Also, has a cd coming out with lots of guesting. Drawing a big blank here.

  4. Wasn't the story with Ashanti that her mother pimped her out for a record deal?

Also, I don't know that she was ever A-list.

  5. Ashanti or Ciara.

  6. I have no clue about the recording industry after, say, 1990 (proud to be a 70's girl :-), but there are enough clues here that this one should be solvable. Come on, guys, you can do it!

  9. I just read Ashanti's Wiki bio. She seems to have broken a lot of records when she first came out and surpassed record sales of Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys.

She seems like a reasonable guess.

  10. ^ I just finished reading the same thing, she's fits this blind really well.

  11. When Ashanti was on Murder Inc. (When she was famous) Irv Gotti did go on a interview after the labeled went down because of drug ties, and Ashanti "left" that he was having sex with her but her album coming out isn't really big and its getting released on her own again. Id say Ciara was bigger then her.

  12. Joss Stone has enjoyed consistent success, particularly overseas.

    ReplyDelete
  13. this sounds like jojo.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't think it would be Fiona Apple, given that she was raped as a child.

Cheryl Cole became famous on a TV show in the UK. That's how Girls Aloud started.

Nelly Furtado was around for a while before she became famous. Also, she writes and produces most of her own music, so I don't think she would necessarily need the hook up.

  15. Can someone clue me in on what the men have to trade for these benefits?

  16. Joss Stone is referred to as "Fucks for Songs" on another site. This wouldn't be much of a BI.

  18. If this is true I'm sure others have had to do it too.

Was thinking Blu Cantrell but she was never A list

    Hope it is not Sade

  19. I don't think this is typical of the recording industry as a whole. For one thing, there is a LOT of money on the line to put a new artist out there and yes, there is hanky-panky here and there, but not wholesale pimping.

Anyone wanting to be an artist in ANY field had better avoid these pitfalls because they are warning signs of the highest magnitude that you are not being groomed for legitimate reasons.

A legitimate record company will pay for (and produce) the material, time and people needed to make an album. A few years ago, it was $1m minimum to launch a new artist. Of course, then they deduct from the artist's income until the up-front investment is made.

If you are having to compromise yourself and/or pay for yourself, it's not a legit deal. Walk away!

  20. Ashanti was definitely A list at one point in the world of R&B. She had a big gap between her 2004 album and 2008 album, and now she has one coming out in 2013.

Ciara was also a big deal. There was a gap from her 2006 album to 2009 & 2010 albums, but her 2009 album is pretty loaded w/guest appearances.

I'm going to go with Ashanti on this one, because she has a pretty notorious rep for being a stable girl.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think this is Ciara. She was a much bigger name than Ashanti, not to mention that Ashanti was with Nelly for so many years. I don't see that guy as a sharing type with his main chick, maybe his groupies.
Ciara is rumored to have been paying paparazzi to follow her for a while, trying to stir public interest. I can see this being her.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't know much about this, either. Did any of the guesses have an album they produced themselves that didn't do well?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nevermind. I missed the guests rappers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i hope it's not fiona apple!

    ReplyDelete
  25. My first thought was Ciara who did go to "who" status very, very quickly.

I didn't know about Joss Stone's nickname on another fan board.

I say one of the two although Joss has quite a bit of cheese IIRC.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fiona Apple writes all her own material. Doesn't really fit, other than having a new record dropping.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Weren't they trying to brand Ashanti as the Queen of Pop at one point? Sounds like she was more like the Queen of Bop.

  28. Ashanti was my first guess but what about Monica?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I was thinking Monica too. She has been popping up lately at random places. Like a strip club with Ludacris. As for Ashanti, isn't she still dating Nelly? Surely he could help her out.

  29. a couple of weeks ago there was a blind about a singer (most of us believed it was about Ashanti), that had sex a producer, that could help her with her career.

it was at a fashion show i guess, where she was wearing a kind of see-through-dress, that made it especially easy.

    anyone remember?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Actually, reading about Ciara's album Basic Instinct (2010), it bombed pretty hard and she paid for a video to be made because the label wasn't promoting her at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_Instinct_%28album%29

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ashanti was my first thought, I'm not a big R&B listener, and her name I would recognize, I could not hum one note of a Ciara song.

I really hope it's not Joss Stone, I always thought she was a talented kid, key word being "kid" wasn't she like 16 when she started?

I agree with other posters, that a man who has to force a woman to have sex with him is either a pin dick, or legal rapist, either way it makes him a loser.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This makes me feel less bad about dropping pursuing music as a career back in the day, because of the sleaze factor.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was thinking ashanti too

    ReplyDelete
  34. Also: "When asked by Gerrick D. Kennedy. from the Los Angeles Times, if the label [ LaFace Records ] had anything to do with the delays in release or late promotion, Ciara replied "I did see a few comments and I said, 'You know what? I one day look forward to being able to share with my fans (things that happen).' "

    (sorry to post so much)

  35. I first thought Ciara, she was everywhere and was becoming a household name but then she fell off the face of earth. But what about JoJo? Wasn't she big for a little while and then her record company screwed her over, then no one hears about her, and now she is trying to sing again.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Fiona has nothing to do with rappers, and she'd write about this crap in her songs for sure. She'd write scathing material about these pieces of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Debbie Gibson! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Toni Braxton? She was beyond huge at one point .. then nothing ..

    ReplyDelete
  39. JoJo is in limbo with her producers, buti feel like this isn't her. She would have been wayyyy underage, that would have factored into the blind.
Ciara produced her last album, which flopped. She is releasing her next album through Epic, with LA Reid.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This is deff ciara.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ashanti already published a poetry book...whoever this is, she is shopping some kind of autobiography...

And yes, the music industry is disgusting, and pretty much any female solo artist got where she is by either sleeping with people to ladder climb or being in a relationship/marriage with someone who protected her as a manager or guiding force. It is a dirty, dirty business.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This better not be Joss Stone. She was 14 when she made her first album.

  43. So once again, we have powerful men - the good 'ol boys club, abusing women and probably children. Call me a man hater, I don't care. Good men are awesome - wish there were more of them. Most men are raging assholes, and this is yet another case in point. I said "most men", and I stand by that statement. Give them a little power and they'll beat their wives and rape their kids, or just sit on the couch watching tv while their SO does everything. They work their 8 hours, and so do their wives, but they come home expecting dinner on the table and don't bother communicating or hanging with the kids. That's the woman's job. This is my entire life experience with men. Assholes.

Women need to run things again. I'm not saying some women won't abuse power, but we have a bit more heart and the instinct to protect, rather than to degrade. After the horror stories I heard on Father's Day, I'm so fucking over men.

  47. this blind makes me sick. it seems like its all the same - hollywood and the music industry. vulnerable women getting raped in order for them to move ahead and if they don't agree to it, there goes their career.

I kind of long for the days when the most horrifying blind item was coke mom and the fake singer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @annabella - I hear you. Too many blinds like this. This kind of thing makes me want to go Old Testament on some people, but alas, I am not a god.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @Another Josh-they were calling Ashanti the new Princess of hip hop soul, which promptly pissed of Mary J and Aretha.

@hunter-yeah I thought of Joss "Fucks for tracks" Stone because there are videos of producers- I thnk Dallas Austin was one of them-talking about how she would do anything for tracks, so they did her. Also, Dallas was notorious for his coke problem.

I could be wrong, but just adding to the bit.

Also, common knowledge that Ashanti has been fronting money to Nelly since he hasn't had a big hit for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm gonna guess Jewel. She came put with a totally different type of album at one point.

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is heartbreaking and disgusting. I could see it being Ciara or Ashanti but I'm leaning towards Ciara. It's a low-down dirty shame that these beautiful, talented women get treated like fucking property just to get a record deal, which they should get based on their talent alone. Ciara is an amazing performer and she, like so many others, deserves better.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't think Jewel would have rappers for guest appearances though, would she? Unless she's going in a totally new direction...

    ReplyDelete
  53. No sympathy. She voluntarily prostituted herself for money and fame.

    ReplyDelete
  54. What about Lily Allen? She's supposedly recording again.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Not Jewel. Much as I hate her, I know someone who was with her at the beginning and it didn't go like that. (It also didn't go as the dramatic history she made up, either. Something much more boring LOL)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Not Jewel - she turned country after meeting & marrying a pro bullrider.

Anyways, I agree that it's probably not Ciara - she posted on her FB page in Feb 2011 that she wanted to (and asked to) be dropped by her labe l b/c she thought they didn't promote her newest single enough, no control, etc., etc.

    http://www.rap-up.com/2011/02/14/ciara-prays-for-label-to-release-her/

    Anyways, a few other maybes...

Christina Milian? She was dropped by Island Def Jam in 08 and recorded her own album with MySpace. (I'm not too sure though because she is an actress and a mother as well, maybe doesn't lend itself well to drug use?) Anyways, she supposedly has an article coming out in 2012 through Young Money.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I would have never thought about her but she fits! Young money is the most popular "hip hop" label right now... 8I like your guess!

  57. oops I meant an album coming out, not an article! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I wish more female artists believed in themselves and stood up for themselves. I think it is Ashanti also. She was everywhere one day and nowhere the next and was reduced to wearing bizzare outfits she was spilling out of at fashion shows to exploit herself for attention.

I think the worst mistake she made was going on Irv Gotti's label. Nothing good was going to come of it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. If you're desperate for the fame and money associated with a music (or film and television) career, suck it up and do what you have to.

There's plenty of other careers an aspiring singer or actress/actor can pursue if they don't want to get their souls dirty.

I'm afraid I have zero pity for anyone forced to visit the casting couch because, like this article said, there's plenty of people out there with at least as much talent.

If you don't have the skill to make it without selling yourself, maybe you shouldn't be trying to get into show business in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @MadLyb - That is why FemDom exists... and that many males believe Females are superior. The power of a sexy, confidant, intelligent Woman is a beautiful thing.

If a man is a "asshole" man as you put it chastity and cuckolding will put him in his place. men like the ones you describe actually have HUGE insecurities and they know it.

    Anyway... newbie on this site.

Whoever that artist is should have bought herself a whip.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just to be different I'm going w Lil Kim. I just dont think Ashanti or Ciara were A, or had just sooo many hits they thought they were immune. I could be wrong tho, other than that they're okay guesses, but Ashanti's new record is the first album to be released on her new label, which goes against the she went broke trying it on her own.. I thought maybe brandy but she was prob better known as an actress, or eve but shes def been relevant and making money so she wouldn't need to do that. Then I looked up lil Kim who has an album coming up this year after a 7 year gap, and back on her original record label. On her first album she had jay-z, jermaine dupri, diddy and biggie. Andddd she has a book that she's holding off to release with her newest album called "the price of loyalty"....so she's my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like the Lil' Kim guess, SilverOnyx. I know NOT ONE of her songs (except "Lady Marmalade" of course), but what I remember about her debut is that she seemed to be f*cking every big name in her genre. Didn't she make it part of her schtick, that she f*cked rappers?
BUT---Did she ever release an album that sounded 'different'? From what I've heard about her, her singing voice is atrocious. So did she try a non-rap album ever?

I think the big clue is somebody who had a huge hit 1st album with lots of guest big-name rappers, but her latest album (years old)was a totally different sound. Who fits this?

    ReplyDelete
  63. These men should totally have their pathetic asses revealed. Then they should crawl across hit coals and beg this singer's forgivness. Who the f*ck are they to play god with thus woman????!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. This is definately Nelly Furtado. She dropped off the radar fast a few years ago. Then she made her own production company and released a Spanish album (sounded nothing like rest...) She has a new album coming out with many top producers and cameos, Nas being one of them.
Perhaps she said she couldn't do it anymore because her popularity fell right around the time she got married?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Unknown- totally agree. I have no pity for these girls. They arn't getting raped, they're doing it of their own free will for fame and fortune. No sympathy from this girl.

All of them! Every female recording artist. Come on, if it's an industry wide practice why would they spare some and not others? The movie biz and the music biz are in the same town, and it's the same type of people running it. To get y a shot at millions of dollars and fame you have to give something that will set you apart from others. If you're not willing to put out, there's a million girls behind you just as talented and hotter than you that will. It's not just one a&r guy, it's not just one producers, it's 99.9% of them. Because 90% of men are douchebags and horndogs. Alot of women are bitches, psychos, narcissists too though. It's just human nature. All people are attracted to a hot body, a stunning face, and immense talent, look at the nature of celebrity. It's all made up of extremely attractive people that the public fantasizes about and wants to sleep with. Brad Pitt? Salma Hayek? Marilyn Monroe? Robert Pattinson? Would you be so interested in those people if they looked like tech support guys or long haul truckers? Underage girls should be off limits absolutely, but anyone of age knows the game and plays it.

  72. I think this may be fiona apple once she started dating that director her music career stalled. She no longer wanted to be used and opened her eyes to what was happening... so its a positive story in the end. I am trying to think of a female artist who has lots of cameos from other artists in her songs..... I just threw FA out there but not totally sure.

  77. I'm going out on a limb here and saying the BI favorite guess...Betty White.
Actually, I am thinking Ashanti, too. It is so sad, though, for someone to have that much talent and have to sell themselves out to even get recognized. I wonder how many extremely talented people the world will never get to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Not all of them - There's pretty good sign's of who it's not actually.

It's not Taylor Swift - Independent record label, writes her own songs and her own music.

It's not Alanis Morrissette - Writes her own songs, music, and writes OTHER peoples music too.

Taking my guess at this -

Nelly Furtado had two albums that were 'okay' in Canada (I'm like a bird) but did nothing in the states. She vanished for a bit.

Then she came back in hooked up with Timbaland and doing rappy albums (Loose, Promiscious Girl, Maneater) with tons of rapper appearances. She also seemed to suddenly develop a huge addiction problem - videos of her from the Much Music awards during this period are hideous.

Then she got dropped from the Timbaland money train and is now doing latin albums.

I think that's what the "It didn't start or end like it, but in the middle" refers to. She started out very folk, indie girl with a guitar, turned into a Timbaland toy and then turned back.

  81. I was in my late teens/early 20s when lots of the singers guessed were rising in the music charts. If I had to name the ones who have stuck with me in a, "Hey she was great, what happened to her?" way, I'd go with Ashanti, Brandy, Monica and Eve. All good singers. Like the Lil' Kim guess, but she's not R&B, and if her voice has changed, it's because she's gone all MJ on her nose.

I'm on the Ashanti train. Irv Gotti was a BFD back in the day, and he had quite an entourage to get through. And, she's guested on songs for Ja Rule, Usher, Busta Rhymes and Big Pun.

And, Enty mentions she was meeting with some of the biggest producers (plural) in the industry. Wikipedia notes that she originally auditioned for Puff Daddy and Biggie Smalls, but backed out of the contract they offered her, then went to Jive Records; finished school, went to Epic Records (which also didn't work out) then started "hanging out" at the Murder Inc. studio, hoping for a break.

Label hopping and "hanging out" seem to fit.

    ReplyDelete
  82. er Mr.Wolf out of curiousity how is it you know that Taylor Swift writes all her own songs? I don't doubt she writes the (horrible) lyrics. I seriously doubt she does all the composition. In fact I think I have seen a video of her collaborating with a songwriting partner before, it was on some horrible tweeny DVD my nieces have. And wouldn't it be easier to keep that you are not 100% responsible for your art under wraps if you had your own record label? So... I'm going to go with the "Taylor does everything by herself!" is a big load of PR nonsense that may have been true at some point but is definitely not now.

Ashanti and Ciara do make sense. Except I don't think Ciara was ever A list recognition. Ashanti, for a time, you couldn't go anywhere w/o hearing one of her songs with stupid Ja Rule etc.

Also- Nelly F. had guest spots on other artists songs too long before the Promiscious Girl stuff, like Missy Elliott/Get Ur Freak On.... so I think she is definitely a strong contender.

    ReplyDelete
  83. ashanti recorded her new unreleased album independently. this is definitely her.

    ReplyDelete
  84. This (horribly sad) item screams Nelly Furtado to me. I think she has been divorced for a couple of years now, so she wouldn't be cheating on a husband in order to do what she's got to do to get this next record made.

  85. Now I understand why Beyonce is with Jay Z.

  91. This just can't be Nelly Furtado. Her "Loose" album did change in sound from her prior stuff, but she won a Latin grammy for her subsequent album and it did well (maybe not in the US). She is really experimental with her sounds. Not to mention crazy talented. I don't think this is her at all.
I thought the Kelly Clarkson guess was interesting b/c she had label problems and a flunked album -- did she have any rappers on her earlier album(s)?
Throwing another name out but it probably doesn't fit b/c I don't think she collaborated w/rappers and not sure if she has an album coming out -- Avril?

What about Foxy Brown? I think she is more of a "who?" than Lil Kim who no one can forget ever. She said she had another album coming out in late 2011...

  92. I can't help but feel that "fucks for tracks" needs some x's to turn it into a really marketable trademark. Joss Fux4trax Stone, you know.

Get Fiona's name off your random internet tongues. She has real talent and has her entire life. People like that don't suck dick for record deals.

  94. I'm putting my money on Ashanti. it's well know in the hip hop world that Ashanti was label President Irv Gotti's side-piece.

Also as recently as a couple of weeks ago, she got paid $20,000 to talk to Atlantic City high school students about staying in school while wearing a freak em' dress. It was a big controversy because the school used their student improvement fund to pay Ashanti. Many are calling for her to return the money because she hasn't been relevant since the early 2000s.

  95. this is either Ashanti or Lil Kim, but I'm leaning towards Ashanti. either way, this is EASILY hip hop/R&B.

  97. I still feel that the "Not Again" references Ciara. She has a track "Never Ever" and one "Never Never".

  98. @NK Foxy Brown went deaf -- that's why she disappeared.
Ashanti seemed like the biggest deal for awhile there. She seems more likely to me than Nelly Furtado.

  99. @Izahar - No one rights all their own songs.

But if you look at Swift's first two albums on Wikipedia, she has sole song writing credit for the majority fo the album and seems to work primarily with Liz Rose for her singles.

If you look at Nelly Furtado's first album, she has shared credit on every song.

If you look at loose, she has no production credits and only shares the writing credits.

But yes, I do think you raise a good point that virtually no one writes their entire album solo.

  100. Nelly Furtado's spanish album has (unfortunately) been a huge hit.
It sounds awwwwful, omg, she schreeches. its been on the radio non stop so I dont think its her.

Actually I think this could fit BOTH ashanti and ciara, who are babes. I can see the poweful execs taking advantage on them :P

  101. I wish this would turn out to be JLo, but I can't make it all fit :(

  102. Definitely not Lily Allen, she's from a super rich and connected family. She doesn't need to beg for anything. Plus, no rappers.

Nelly Furtado would surprise me. Round the time Maneater was released she did an interview on British TV and when the host revealed he had a bit of a crush on her she threw a giggly fit and ran away, hardly the actions of a woman jaded by casual sex!

I would guess Lil Kim, Ciara, Brandy or Ashanti.

  103. Lily Allen comes from a rich family with that accent? I had her pegged as the daughter of Alfred P Doolittle, common dustman. She has a worse accent than Eliza Doolittle selling flowers in Covent Garden.

  104. The only thing that bothers me about this blind (and some others) is that once again we have a female vicer who (a) is apparently forced to have sex and (b) is forced to get hooked on drugs. My one question is: Do these women accept no responsibility? Unless these producers, etc. are forcing it down her throat, I have to wonder aloud: WHY DOES SHE SAY YES? She sounds so victimized --- "Showbiz is so horrible to women!" ... but why doesn't she just say NO?

  105. mandy moore cuz she is an actress too? or ciara lol

  106. This is definitely Keri Hilson. In the song, "knock you down" feat. Ne-Yo. She starts off by saying, "not again."

  107. Ciara might be a really good guess...Ashantiis a good one too... Ciara A list? Damn, I remember a MariahCarey A list...now anyone can be a list. Anyway, I have a feeling this could be true..
Check out what the streets are saying about Ciara... http://diaryofahollywoodstreetking.com/who-is-jacky-talking-about-january-30-2012/#more-41300
