It looks like The New York Observer has decided to out Chace Crawford. They wrote an article about sexuality and actors and how a man had been enjoying the company of another man at a premiere party and how that man was Chace Crawford. Only, they are kind of sneaky about it. They only mention Chace's name at the end when they say this about the premiere party. “There’s also the simple matter of defusing the knowing laughter of a public that maybe just doesn’t care that much anymore. ‘If you’re in the closet,’ said [Lance] Bass, ‘you get made fun of more than if you just come out!’ If he’s in fact gay, that’s a lesson Chace Crawford—the dashing, engrossed young man at the premiere—may do well to heed.”
You're nothing more than a bully if you try and out someone. People hurt themselves because they simply weren't ready to tell people. It's personal and should remain so.

I think a person should handle the most intimate detail of their personal life in whatever way they feel most comfortable. They are actors, and should not be cajoled into being poster boys for anyone's activist agenda. That said, the magazine is probably right. Speculation won't stop for a high profile figure who's suspected of having a secret side.

ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous to me that celebrities do something completely normal and natural in plain sight and everyone watching is supposed to keep mum about it out of respect for their 'privacy' and 'he should be able to come out on his own terms.'

ReplyDeleteI am torn. I think it's mean spirited to put that story in the media if it's not common knowledge, but I also dislike the idea that someone publicly shows their true affinity then plants lies in the media.

ReplyDeleteBeen a member and poster of the CDAN community for a couple of years now. Whenever something like this comes up, I really do appreciate most commenters who say if someone is gay it is no problem to them and how they should be allowed to NOT talk about it if they choose.
ReplyDeleteI see a big double standard in the entertainment world and gossip world. Straight actors/actresses are bloody well expected to talk about their relationships in interviews, and they DO talk about them. A gay actor OTOH gets a tacit pass from media not to talk about it. Now why is that do you think? I know why. Because if an actor comes out as gay, he will all of a sudden be doing community theatre. Neil Patrick Harris is the only one I know of that has managed to survive being outed and still keep his job. But with him, when he was outed, he already had a HUGE fan base dating right back to Doogie Howser. He's one of the lucky ones, but I don't think you will ever see him as the main romantic lead in a movie.
It really sucks, but if you want to have a lucrative career in Hollywood, you have to lie about your orientation, or your past arrest, or whatever.

ReplyDeleteAnd oh, BTW, I saw Peace Love & Misunderstanding and Chance was not only gorgeous but very convincing as a hetero love interest. He is, after all, an ACTOR. Hope Hollywood gets some day soon the concept that if we ask straight actors to play gay, and they do it well, we can ask gay actors to play straight and they'll do it well, so who cares what someone is?
Then again, it sounds like most actors are gay, and since most roles are straight....oh this is so confusing.... ;-)))

ReplyDeleteI never understood why they continue to "out" or criticize people who live in the glass closet. These people aren't denying their sexuality. Just because they don't come out and say the words "i"m gay" doesn't matter. They live their life openly. Do straight celebs need to come out and say "I'm Straight" on the cover of People Magazine? The ones who hide it or deny it are a little different in my eyes. Not that I believe in outing them, but they sell us an image in order to make us spend money to on their products. So they are deceiving us, which is also not right. John Travolta doesn't hide it well, just because he's married with kids and says he's straight doesn't mean much when there are are paparazzi pictures of you kissing other men and tons of men coming forward. Tom Cruise hides it better. But the ones who are in the glass closet really should be left alone, They aren't lying to their fans or presenting a false image. They live their lives openly, they just don't speak about it.

Times have changed. I don't think anyone cares which actors are gay or not gay. It is interesting however to see to what lengths they will go to to cover it up. Look at Tomkat - it's insane but so is he so.... Look at Travolta - they say his life is absolute hell...I just don't get it. This is 2012.

Who among us hasn't preferred to talk to a friend instead of a bunch of strangers from time to time? Maybe it was his date, maybe it wasn't, but he wasn't "going public" with anything. ReplyDeleteOh, and Chase was "outed" to me the moment I laid eyes upon him. Seriously, I have the most finely tuned gaydar of anyone I know. I remember in late elementary school, when kids were first starting to be aware of nascent sexual attraction, I knew who every gay boy and girl in the class was. Not that I said anything, any more than I would have said "did you know Mary has red hair?!" because it was that obvious and just a fact. And believe it or not, I turned out to be right in every case.
(Didn't stop me from thinking a couple of boyfriends in my stupid 20s were enough on the cusp to actually be straight...in this case I was dead wrong, haha)
I think that the sooner more gay celebrities come out, the sooner there will be a critical mass of powerful people who just happen to be gay. THAT'S what will make the masses finally get over it.

Basil--I can see where you're coming from with the double-standard, but heterosexuality is not looked down upon or classified as something wrong by half of the country like homosexuality is. Who knows, maybe if there were no dbl-standard here, that would change--but for now, the different approach to homo & hetero actors in interviews (regarding private life) is necessary, albeit unfortunate, I think.
