Your Turn
Does anyone make actual photo albums anymore or is everything you have online? Remember back in the day when you would drag out family albums and embarrass other family members? Now, it seems like you have to find a photo on your phone or scroll through Picasa. Does anyone use actual albums anymore?
I don't. But I have made printed picture books using shutterfly, mpix, mypublisher, and the like.
ReplyDeleteI JUST finally spent last week slogging through almpat 7 years of photos to make albums for my twins. I grew up when there was no Internet & no digital cameras, so I really feel like younger people are missing out on the fun of looking through family albums and the big box of photos your parents never got into albums! I'm going to try to keep up with the albums, but whew! What a project!

ReplyDeleteI have one of those big box of photos that never got into albums. Two of them, actually. All the photos from my grandmother, my mother, and my own. Sometimes when the kids visit, we dump a box into the floor and sit there going through them and it's a blast.
ReplyDeleteDigital is great but I seem to lose a lot of photos that way, either accidentally deleting them, or getting a new computer, etc. I love that digital is so inexpensive, but hate to see the real photos becoming history.
When I recently visited my mom, I went through many boxes of photos. Found some photo albums here, and I'm taking them down with me when I visit mom again next week to make albums. So, yeah, they exist. It was a lot of fun looking through the albums I'd made in high school, stupid captions and all. I'm glad I wrote the notes or I wouldn't have remembered names. (Still can't remember most of these peeps but at least I have their names, right? I'm not old but my memory is shot.)
ReplyDeleteI caved and joined FB a couple of months ago, I like being able to make albums there.
No photo albums now. It's so much more fun to embarrass people online in an instant!
ReplyDeleteI have probably 10,000 pictures on my computer. One of my favorite things when I was a kid was to look at photo albums of my family.
ReplyDeleteThis post has inspired me! I have a photo printer and paper, now I need some albums. But the time I will spend on it will be nothing compared to the amount of time it took to take the pictures. If I lost them all or even half of them I would be devastated
The fact that a lot of pictures are lost or deleted on phones and laptops is really sad. I always make an album from trips to NYC and I always, always SHARE pictures.
ReplyDeleteI have made collages of special events for family. Michael's has cute stuff even though I'm not very crafty.
My wonderful, awesome DBF just surprised me with a coffee-table like photo album of our first 10 months here in Seattle. It is filled with photos from all of the things we have done and seen.
ReplyDeleteI have family photos that go back to the late 1800's. they are preserved in an album. I also have my Red Sox scrapbook which has moved along with me for decades.
ReplyDeleteI do too many photos! Albums on FB, instagram, hipstamatic. UPload everything to shutterfly and get prints from them and also prints via hipstamatic. Love photos!
ReplyDeleteFor vacations I make those photo books on shutterfly so my kids have all of one trip in one book to look at!
Yes, still keep up the albums. When things are going badly, I can drag them out and remember the good times, and that helps me put the present challenges in perspective.
ReplyDeleteI also know people that accumulate photos on one of the photo-sharing services, like Shutterfly, and then once a year drag and drop all the best ones into one of those make-it-yourself books. With coupons they cost about 20 bucks, which is a pretty good investment, I think.
I make them for the cats. Not FOR the cats but you all know what I mean. Last time my mother made one was when my dad died (10 yrs on the 28th). She put together all the pictures and jewelry he ever gave her into this really awesome album for me.
ReplyDeleteI scrapbook my photos. Recently acquired alot of vintage photos after my mom passed away, and I'm gradually working on them. I also contribute layouts to a sketch team. It's lots of fun and allows me to be creative a bit.
ReplyDeleteI lost my lifetime of photos, 20 albums and numerous shoeboxes waiting to be made into albums to a flood in 2005 (along with around 300 record albums). I miss them all terribly, but keep everything digitally now, whether I have it printed or not.
ReplyDelete@Momster - I don't scrapbook, but was going to say, doesn't anyone on here scrapbook? Good heavens, Enty, you must really not have your finger on the pulse of today's moms :-)! I have many friends who are scrap booking fiends! Creative Memories, anyone?
ReplyDeleteMy kids have big boxes of momentos that I add to each year. That's my best offering. I hate taking and editing pictures, so am fortunate to have a professional photographer in the family.
Rickatoo, that's do sad :-(. We used to live in hurricane country, so I have my kid's stuff in plastic containers with snap - on lids so it would stand a chance in the event of a flood.

ReplyDeletebacked-up. When my mom passed away, my family sent me her old family photo albums. Priceless, but I still want to back them up digitally. This environment is too harsh on photo paper.
I divide my life in two parts before divorce and AFTER divorce. Very technologically Telling!
ReplyDeleteEvery year for Christmas I make my nephews photo books from Shutterfly from the events over the past year. It takes quite a while, and I didn't think they appreciated them, but I was late with them this year and they both were bummed they didn't get them Christmas morning. Plus I always tell them that when they get in their 20's and start bitching about how crappy their childhood was, I can use the books as evidence to call BS.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite is looking at my moms family photo albums. My parents were huge hippies so seeing pics of them in the 70's are a kick. My mom had Cher hair and my dad was a " long hair ". I love playing " spot the bong " in our family albums .. There's one in the background on at least every other page!

ReplyDeletea store my pictures on a yahoo email account. that way if anything happens i still have them. when i got divorced, my ex refused to let me have any of he photos of the kids. his attorney actually told my attorney that he felt it was "all he had left" (snif). but i had them online, so it didn't matter. i have a lot of pictures up in the house and i use that app that leta you make it look like your in a photobooth (think thata the name). i love pictures.

ReplyDeleteMy parents never really made albums since we used to move around every couple of years when I was younger and it was just a hassle to make big albums and lug them around. Mom used to just dump all the photos into boxes of her old heels.
ReplyDeleteNow a days I do try to make prints of the photos I take from my camera - there's just something I love about holding a photo in my hand. Plus SD cards are so small and some cameras are tiny - I borrowed my moms little cam to get pictures of my time at prom since I didn't want to lug around my giant dslr and I forgot all about in the pocket of the tuxedo and lost it :(
I was obsessed with making albums and scrapbooks, but haven't made one since college. I do make digital ones for our big vacations. I loved using My Publisher, Mixbook, etc.
