I don't have kids, but I work remotely, so I did have my dogs with me (same as every day).
I thought the idea behind it was pretty cool back when it was take your daughter to work day to show young girls what careers are out there for them. Loved going with my dad for that.
My old bosses used to bring their kids in all the time. It was TORTURE. They all had like 6 kids each and I'm pretty sure they were inbred to some degree. They would run around the office screaming all day.
When I was at Microsoft, my coworkers would often bring their kids in. I hated it -- you have to ooh and aah and pretend you like their kids, when really you're thinking "just let me do my work!"
Yep, but I always made sure my kid had something cool to do. The last year I did it, he was really into computers and also sea life. He took the metro by himself down to DC (he was 14), he spent a couple of hours with me and my team, then I took him to the Natural history museum, where a friend had hooked us up with a deep sea scientist who was an expert in the Gigantic Squid. The guy was phenomenal, and my kid has a great time.
I don't have kids, but if they ever have a "bring your dog to work" - day, I'll bring Miss Juno in a heartbeat, and she can drive everyone nuts and probably pee on the carpet.
In Ontario the BYK to work is for Gr 9 students only, and I think the day is in Nov or Dec. Only a few of my coworkers at the time brought their kids in, and it was annoying. All they did was stare around and play on cell phones, and their moms were distracted all day and it was hard to work with them. I'd like to think kids would be better off to be in school, but considering what my stepdaughter brings home as homework... Gah. I weep for the future.
Please refrain from disrupting your children's schedules (daycare or school) for bring your child to work day.
Your co-workers will not appreciate it. They see your kids in the pics on your desk or on your PC and know enough about them based on the conversations that you have about them in the office.
Work is where you go to earn a living and get away from home. Home is where you go to unwind and get away from work.

The original idea was to show girls mum worked too and what she did, to make them aspire higher than suoermodel. Then boys had to be added to be pc, and now its just degenerated into a pain in the ass day. It cld easily be done away with.
Yes and she loved it. She got to hear about all the different parts of our operation, and she had to say what I did and had no idea, but I have a laptop and cellphone. The best part...she got her first paycheck! She was so excited she had to call everyone and let them know.

My dog mostly slept under my desk. They still do it once a year, I'm told. :) I think the kids thing is fine as long as the kids are above a certain age. Otherwise I could see where it would be disruptive & people would get pissy.
At my old job doing payroll, our company had a whole routine for "Take Your Child To Work" day. A group of us took turns babysitting, err, showing them around and giving them activities to do while their parents worked. My daughter loved it.
She has accompanied me to work in various jobs, as well. When I was a reporter, she loved coming to the newsroom when I pulled a Saturday shift, and thought the old building was pretty cool.
She thinks my current job as a retail rep for a snack foods company is much less cool, but she still has come with me from time to time. The only cool part about it for her is seeing what new products I get. It pays reasonably well, too.
No, No and No. We don't do anything that a child would be allowed to see or be involved in.

Children are a distraction in the workplace. I've seen colleagues bring in multiple kids and what do the kids do all day?

We all protested to HR at my last corporate job and it was stopped after the 1st year. It was just plain..stupid
