Your Turn

Did you take your child to work yesterday? Have you ever? Do your co-workers?

No, No and No. We don't do anything that a child would be allowed to see or be involved in.

I'd also like to smack whoever started this idea.

I don't have kids, but I work remotely, so I did have my dogs with me (same as every day).

I thought the idea behind it was pretty cool back when it was take your daughter to work day to show young girls what careers are out there for them. Loved going with my dad for that.

This question is discrimantory against childless people.

I'm a stay at home mom, so yes :)

My child is a dog, and I take her to work 3-4 times a week! :)

As a former teacher, I would never have taken my pre-school aged child to work. The admin would have frowned on that.

My old bosses used to bring their kids in all the time. It was TORTURE. They all had like 6 kids each and I'm pretty sure they were inbred to some degree. They would run around the office screaming all day.

Does being at the preschool downstairs count?

I didn't realize yesterday was BYOK day. Guess my employer's not into that so much anymore.

Children are a distraction in the workplace. I've seen colleagues bring in multiple kids and what do the kids do all day?

Run around;
Sit in daddy's office drawing pictures or;
Sleep in a chair;
Ask when they can go home.

When I was at Microsoft, my coworkers would often bring their kids in. I hated it -- you have to ooh and aah and pretend you like their kids, when really you're thinking "just let me do my work!"

Don't have kids but when I worked in hospitals, people never brought their kids into work. Just not appropriate around sick and injured people.

They will get more out of a day at school then watching me use a computer all day. Never, never, ever liked this stupid day.

This is off-topic but I wanted to post a link to this tribute to Roger Ebert--talk about a feel-good moment.

Yep, but I always made sure my kid had something cool to do. The last year I did it, he was really into computers and also sea life. He took the metro by himself down to DC (he was 14), he spent a couple of hours with me and my team, then I took him to the Natural history museum, where a friend had hooked us up with a deep sea scientist who was an expert in the Gigantic Squid. The guy was phenomenal, and my kid has a great time.

I don't have kids, but if they ever have a "bring your dog to work" - day, I'll bring Miss Juno in a heartbeat, and she can drive everyone nuts and probably pee on the carpet.

In Ontario the BYK to work is for Gr 9 students only, and I think the day is in Nov or Dec. Only a few of my coworkers at the time brought their kids in, and it was annoying. All they did was stare around and play on cell phones, and their moms were distracted all day and it was hard to work with them. I'd like to think kids would be better off to be in school, but considering what my stepdaughter brings home as homework... Gah. I weep for the future.

I bring my kids to work every day.. of course I am also a stay at home Mom....

Or a different take on 'did you take your kids to work'

Yes! Drop them off at school 5 days a week!

@Karen, and people who just want to WORK!

@Lotta, are you going to be the slayer again? You were killing me yesterday, and now this!

Karen said...

@Lotta, I'd thank you for your support, but warlords don't have to thank anyone for anything.

Please refrain from disrupting your children's schedules (daycare or school) for bring your child to work day.

Your co-workers will not appreciate it. They see your kids in the pics on your desk or on your PC and know enough about them based on the conversations that you have about them in the office.

Work is where you go to earn a living and get away from home. Home is where you go to unwind and get away from work.

Steps off soap box and walks away whistling.

When I was a kid my dad's job was all classified stuff, so I went with my friend. Her mom owned a salon. We got free massages.

My co worker bought her hs age daughter in and made her do the work she usally did. It took FOREVER and fouled uo whole day. The original idea was to show girls mum worked too and what she did, to make them aspire higher than suoermodel. Then boys had to be added to be pc, and now its just degenerated into a pain in the ass day. It cld easily be done away with.

no kids and wouldn't ever. I really don't like children and wouldn't want to be subjected to them in the workplace.

Enty Jr !!! RCB, lol:)

I should be allowed to bring my cats to work. They are cuter than children and better behaved.

Yep

I never had kids, so the answer to that is, "No, thank God."

My kid has a job, she took her own self to work. We've got enough screaming children at work (hospital) we don't need the coworkers' adding to it.

Pink Cashmere said...

Yes and she loved it. She got to hear about all the different parts of our operation, and she had to say what I did and had no idea, but I have a laptop and cellphone. The best part...she got her first paycheck! She was so excited she had to call everyone and let them know.

I work at a jail so definitely NO.

@RejectedCB - ha!! good one!

No, I don't have kids and have never worked anywhere where this would have been allowed. At my last office job, i was in charge of Take Your Dog To Work, which was pretty fun and hassle free. My dog mostly slept under my desk. They still do it once a year, I'm told. :) I think the kids thing is fine as long as the kids are above a certain age. Otherwise I could see where it would be disruptive & people would get pissy.

At my old job doing payroll, our company had a whole routine for "Take Your Child To Work" day. A group of us took turns babysitting, err, showing them around and giving them activities to do while their parents worked. My daughter loved it.

She has accompanied me to work in various jobs, as well. When I was a reporter, she loved coming to the newsroom when I pulled a Saturday shift, and thought the old building was pretty cool.

She thinks my current job as a retail rep for a snack foods company is much less cool, but she still has come with me from time to time. The only cool part about it for her is seeing what new products I get. It pays reasonably well, too.
