Phil Everly, who with his brother, Don, made up the most revered vocal duo of the rock-music era and charted 36 songs in the Top 100, died Friday in Burbank of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 74. The Everly Brothers were in the first group of inductees to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

ReplyDeleteRIP Phil you will be missed. I was raised on your music as my mom adored you all. Kentucky boys that made good. I saw them several times growing up. I used to love watching my parents put their records on and they would dance around the living room to them. Wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteIf not for the Everly Brothers, there wouldn't have been the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, even Joni Mitchell or Crowded House. They were beyond influential, and Phil's high harmonies were transcendent.

ReplyDeleteI remember hearing Graham Nash say in an interview that he met his idols, the Everly Brothers, in the early 60s, and they spent about half an hour talking with him (at 2:00 a.m., after a concert). That meeting convinced Graham to go into music. He spoke with such reverence and love about the meeting; the brothers were very kind and encouraging. Paul Simon has spoken with similar warmth and appreciation about the Everlys; they were part of his "Graceland" tour.
