Blind Item #11 - The Lookalike - A Reader Blind Item

Back in the day, this band was one of the most popular acts touring America. They were a traveling party and their fans worshipped them.

Some of their fanbase was very young. Too young to legally consent to certain activities. And tragically, an adult male on the fringe of the rock scene in

one part of the USA who looked a great deal like one of this band's lineup took cruel advantage of a few kids and their star struck naiveté, convincing them

he actually was a star in this group. He lured them to motels and did very illegal things to these kids. Stories started floating around about what was happening.

The manager knew he had a huge problem on his hands. This musician was no boy scout, as he loved to party and loved his drugs. But he wasn't

a child abuser. The manager soon talked with a leader within a certain very notorious subculture (these guys DO NOT like being referred to as a 'gang').

The members of this subculture were greatly offended anyone would abuse their friend's celebrity in such an evil way. The two commiserated over how the musician's reputation could suffer enormously if he was thought by police and the public of committing the crimes that his lookalike had. They needed a plan.

The very scary if he wasn't your friend leader assured the manager he'd take care of it soon. And he did, with some other very scary friends of his.

The lookalike conman predator soon disappeared. Did he get a stern warning to leave town permanently? Was he beaten into a bloody pulp and maimed?

Killed?! Not exactly sure (the scary guys tend to not talk about these matters publicly), but he wasn't out impersonating and raping anyone on that scene anymore. Can't imagine

anybody, even law enforcement, if he was on their radar back then, are too concerned about his general welfare after he did these things that made him such dangerous enemies."

  1. Just a guess, Jerry Garcia and the Hells Angels? I know it doesn't say the musician is dead though.

  2. "Notorious subculture" is the Juggalos (Insane Clown Posse fans). The FBI once branded them as a gang.

    1. They're still around (unfortunately), so not "back in the day".

  3. I like the Hells Angels guess,Sandy... if so could be The Allman Brothers as well

  4. @Sandybrook, is anyone in the Grateful Dead still alive? It could be one of them. Its seems obvious that thats the band and the HA are the gang, even to me on this side of the pond.

  6. Most of them are still alive

  7. I read this as The Grateful Dead and Hells Angels

  8. Summary:

Child predator impersonates member of popular touring band. Band manager gets subculture gang to intervene, predator stops impersonating for unknown reasons. The End.

    1. Can you summarise Lord Of The Rings, please ? :)

  9. Does any gang like being called a gang? Seems like that could fit any "notorious" group.

Interesting that the manager went to gang enforcers instead of reporting the crimes to the cops. Maybe he already knew from experience in the industry that that would accomplish nothing.

  10. Oh, as for the rapist, if this is true then as the great Sergeant Major 'Shut Up!' Williams would say.... http://i67.tinypic.com/25i7m1e.jpg

  11. My very first thought was The Travelling Wilburys😂

  12. Agree with the Dead and Angels with Bob Weir, rhythm guitarist, for the Dead band member being impersonated.

    1. +1 I think it's Weir.
Jerry had that gimpy finger, a fan would easily know it's not him.

  13. Whoah. Being a pedophile on the radar of the back-in-the-day Hells Angels is one thing, but impersonating someone they know and like in order to abuse children? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the pervert didn't go quietly or quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Terry, same here. Looks like they never toured, though.

  15. Sonny Barger would have been the HA leader in the Bay Area at the time--he's pretty famous. I prefer thinking it's the ICP, although the Angels is almost certainly correct.

  16. I’m sure this is the GD. Their shows were traveling parties and usually involved a weekend of camping and partying.

    1. Also, the HA will ALWAYS refer to themselves as a “club.”

That's the funniest thing I've ever read on CDAN. If I'd been drinking coffee I'd've spat it all over my screen.

The Hell's Angels inspire fear, the Juggalos inspire embarrassment. That's the long and the short of it.

  21. Mad H-- you can interpret these items however you want--my way makes these reader blinds more interesting...!

  22. ICP for the gang/posse and Slipknot for the group? They wore costumes so I can see how someone could take on the personality of one of the band members.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mrs EM-- "very scary" would be the mitigating term in the blind.

    ReplyDelete
  24. To summarize:
Look alike for Grateful Dead band member is drawing attention to the myriad of illegal activities going on at the tour stops. Band manager tells the drug dealer gang who is making mucho dollars selling to all the drug users at the events. Gang finds the guy and kills him. Preserving their cash cow. Is that about it?
To pretend that the HA is anything other than a drug running op is doing them a disservice.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Do you think members of HA read CDAN?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jerry Garcia was missing a middle finger. A fan would likely know that, so they'd know it's not him. Even if they didn't know, they could easily provide a description and prove it's not him.

So it's someone else from the Dead.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Pro-Hells Angels: Jerry Garcia was friends with Sonny Barger.

Pro-Juggalos: On what planet do the Grateful Dead have a lot of underage fans? Their concerts were full of fat, balding, smelly casualties of the 1960's and random burnouts.

    1. I went to plenty of dead shows when I was underaged. The Ventura ones were the best with the beach camping. There was definitely a young following throughout the 80’s.

      Delete
    2. I grew up very near a venue where the Dead played every year (this was in the ‘80’s). We used to see a lot of stoned teenage kids all over our area when the Dead played.

      Delete
    3. Lots and lots of high school kids followed them, middle school if they're precocious. It was practically a rite of passage at my high school, from the 60s till Garcia's death. Then Phish.

      Delete
  28. Phish was a traveling party with loyal fans, but no scary vigilante affiliation that I know of.
I did meet a guy in a bar who claimed he was Trey Anastasio, but I was neither underage nor impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. But have the Dead fans always been old? "Back in the day" maybe there were some pre-teen fans?

Insane Clown Posse doesn't strike me "back in the day."

    Allman Bros - maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think this is the ICP, as this is back in the day, and they're not so back in the day.

this is definitely the Hells Angels. They DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT, tolerate anyone fucking with children.

    I know for FACT.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Remember guys, Hells Angels used to do security for the Dead back in the day, and there are more members of the dead than just Jery Garcia.
All main members are alive except Jerry. Phil, Bobby, Mickey, all alive

  32. Reader blind, did not waste time reading.

    1. You just waste your time posting on it?

  33. it would be fairly easy to impersonate the ICP, as they are in full make-up , for this reason i think it would be the Dead, plus the phrase "back in the day" signifies something distant past

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is the Teletubbies. The artist impersonated was Tinky Winky, by that sick fuck Grimace of McDonald's fame. The "gang" with the scary leader is Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and the rest of the Anipals.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Or The Doobie Brothers and the Hell's Angels

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is 100% about Jerry and Sonny Barger. The story is told in one of the tell-all books written after Jerry died. It may be in Rock Scully's book, Living with the Dead.

    1. +1. Back in the 70s and 80s there were tons of underaged Deadheads. Pre internet the detail about Jerry’s finger wouldn’t have been spread as far and wide as easily. And the HA were both friendly with the Dead and remain very hostile to any kid touchers.

  39. not them...but James Young of Styx had an impersonator that did this as well, raping girls and stealing free rooms and food in hotels. but I'm sure it's not him. Just thought it was interesting.

  41. If it was the Dead it would have been Bobby being impersonated, he's the rhythm guitarist and the lead singer for at least half their catalogue. He was also the babe of the band, back in the day, having joined up when he was 14.

  48. Picturing 80s/Gen-X kids getting newly recruited into the cult of an aging Grateful Dead is kind of LOL. It's a little funny since this band was THE quintessential face of the hippie 60s. But where it all kinda faded away the Dead were still there, unchanged, and still gaining new flowery followers. Kids most likely wishing they had been born early enough for that notorious heyday of Rock n Roll counter-culture, though AFAIC, they were just as well missing out on the best stuff happening in their time (which at this point of Rock n Roll wasn't always mainstream). Also if some of those actual traveling cult 'followers' were UNDERAGED then I don't wanna think about it. None of that sh** sounds appealing.

(Sorry about the deletions, hate not having an edit option. I'm a sloppy typist.

  49. Anybody who actually thinks ICP/Juggalos are a real gang are just as dumb as the FBI agents who branded them as such.

    ReplyDelete
  50. So clearly the Osmonds & the Boy Scouts.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If this were the Juggalos it would be a trick blind. All Juggalos were molested at a young age.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm a Deadhead, long into the culture. I get how this could maybe "supposed to be" GD and someone on their security crew of the Hell's Angels.

However something doesn't sit right to me. I think ICP would make more sense.

Also let's not forget that the bassist of Phish was caught in a compromising situation with a very young girl, like 10 years old, and had his ass handed to him by the Hell's Angels. Good. Fuck Mike Gordon for that.

  53. @AIP - thanks for the clarification, you may be correct.

    @marsh666 - absolutely correct.

  54. The Wiggles. Those guys are creepy, and there are always of kids around. The guy in question was impersonating the narcoleptic one then got "handled" by Dorothy "the raptor" and Henry "8 arms". Those two are savage.

Seriously, it sounds like the dead, and nobody would ever want to impersonate Phil, Mickey, or Billy.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Well if it was 'Dead and the HA, which makes sense, the real backstory is that the "management" were trying to cover for Garcias liking for very looking underage girls. Which was common gossip in Marin County in the 1980's. He was involved with a succession of them. Dumped when they started looking too old. From what I hear the HA are just as active locally now as they were back then. Heard some great stories back then out of the bailbond place across the street from the County Courthouse. All the best barbershops share buildings with bailbond offices. The one in Santa Venetia was the best. The one in Redwood City ran it a close second.

  56. I had never even listened to a Grateful Dead album and I would still go hang out around the venue/area they played at whenever they appeared in my city without having ever gone into one of their shows, just because it was an all day/night party atmosphere, where you could get away with lots of activities in downtown public you normally wouldn't have at any other time of the year bar a championship parade. There were plenty of drugs, and it was plenty easy to find n buy them. I imagine there were plenty of non-fan teens in any city/location where the Dead regularly appeared who would hang out around the scene for however many days they were in town playing up until Garcia's death/the end of the steady touring.
It'd be pretty easy for someone on the fringes of the group/tour, who could get access to exclusive areas and lots of drugs, to lure underage kids into bad situations whether the kids even knew or cared who the band member he was impersonating was.
