Blind Item #3 - Reader Blind Item - Old Hollywood

This late comedic actor who peaked in the 1960’s when he played a very popular character on a very popular TV show and also starred in movies was known for both his delivery and physical appearance.  He was also surprisingly quite the ladies man especially after he divorced his first wife and was single.  What is not publicly known is that in addition to the children he had with his wife, he sired a daughter in the late 60’s with one of his paramours.   She has only recently discovered the identity of her famous father  and is planning to write a book.

  5. Both Eddie Albert's are deceased and that would be interesting.

  6. This totally sounds like Don Knotts. It would be surprising that he was a ladies man and divorced his first wife in 1964. They had 3 kids. He did not marry again till '74.

  7. I was leaning toward Don Adams (known for his delivery) but he had three wives. Although its not specified here how many he ended up having, this leans towards him only having one.
Not that that means anything in Enty-speak.

  8. Jim Nabors!😅

  9. A couple hundred pages on "My daddy was famous"? Sounds like a NYTimes bestseller.

  10. Jim Nabours and Don Knotts are great guesses

  11. I thought Nabors was trapped in the closet.

  12. Jim Nabors was with his partner, Stan , for 38 years before marrying after gay marriage was legalized. No wife.

  13. In the surprisingly entertaining book "Mayflower Madam: The Secret Life of Sydney Biddle Barrows" (copyright 1986, available in the paperback section of your local third-hand bookstore), the Mayflower Madam tells the story of a popular 60s comedian who used to book the girls. They were always looking forward to seeing him because they enjoyed his work, but usually stuck to one session because he had a depressive personality in real life. I'd always assumed that was Don Adams, but it could easily be Don Knotts, too.

Interesting how the name Donald has lost popularity over the years. According to the Social Security website, it was the 6th most popular boy baby name in 1934, and the 488th most popular boy name in 2016. Of course, it might have a comeback soon because - reasons.

In related news, "Ronald" didn't have a comeback in the 1980s, but "Reagan" is now the 98th most popular name for girls.

  14. I was going to guess Don Adams because he was a staple at the Playboy mansion. But he didn't have much of a movie career. He also won a couple Emmys for "Get Smart," and you'd think that would be part of the blind.

Don Knotts was a big TV star, made some movies that did okay but weren't blockbusters, had an even more distinctive "look" than Adams.

Andy Griffith, Fred MacMurray, Eddie Albert--handsome men. Not sure that's what's meant by "distinctive."

Jim Nabors was gay, so it's not him. I can't believe anybody who reads CDAN would guess Nabors, LOL.

  15. Don Knotts was my first thought.

Ronald is interesting. I've known a lot of good Rons, and some bad ones, but none born after '60 or so.

  16. I'll bet it's Don Knotts. He played a "very popular character" not the lead.

  17. I think its Don Knotts. Married three times last time 2002 to 2006 I think. That sounds like a ladies man.

  19. This is definitely Mr. Ed, who got with that slut Lassie. Spuds McKenzie is the offspring.

And to make sure this blind fits with every other one here, Spuds is closeted and also yachts for billionaires.

  20. Buddy Ebsen was my first thought. God help me.

  21. And btw... Don Knotts was also on Three’s Company in the 70’s and 80’s. I’m not sure if that was a bigger hit than the AGS, but it was still huge.

  22. Dean Martin. Yes, i know he was know originally as a singer, and Jerry Lewis.
His movies, as a solo act were along the lines of 007, and his variety show was an act based on his "life" as a swinger in the 60s.
Late, he was the host for the famous "roasts".

  26. Peaked in the 60s.

Very popular character on a very popular TV show (Deputy Bernard 'Barney' P Milton Oliver Fife on 'The Andy Griffith Show')

Also starred in movies (mostly Disney movies: "The Apple Dumpling Gang/Rides Again", "Gus", No Deposit, No Return"; also "No Time For Sergeants", "Hot Lead and Cold Feet", "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken"...)

Unique delivery... (jittery-nervous pop-eyed on the big screen - "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" cameo, "The Shakiest Gun In The West", etc.)

... and appearance (scrawny pop-eyed bewilderment)

    Jesse Donald Knotts, no doubt.

  27. Don Knotts was a family friend. Ole Don was quite the player in his day.

  28. Awww. I miss Don Knotts! He probably was very fun to be around. 🤣

  29. My first thought was Don Knotts; maybe he played himself in "The Love God"?

  30. I'm going with Don Knotts. His appearance was definitely not what one would suspect of a ladies man.

  32. I looked into Ernest Borgnine. He was married to Ethel Merman mid 60’s. That is bumping uglies, but I digress.

They fought constantly. One night she came home from work and flaunted how the director said she had the face of a 20 year old, the legs of a 30 year old. Ernest asked “did he say anything about your old cunt?”

No, she said. He didn’t ask about you.

  34. People in Old Hollywood sure hated condoms.

  35. I’m confused. If she just discovered she had a famous father she never knew, what would she have to write about? Lessons I never learned from a man I did not know?

  36. I read a lot about Don Knotts and Andy being with LOTS of women.

  37. Yes, I think this is Don Knotts too. When he died I read that his daughter said he was quite the ladies man. Which I found odd because he is not a person I would describe as attractive plus, I thought it was odd that his daughter would call him a ladies man. Kinda weird.

  38. I agree with the Jackie Gleason guess.

Popular TV character - Ralph Kramden.

    Also starred in movies.

Had a distinctive delivery and physical appearance.

Was married three times and had several children.

  39. Dick Van Dyke? Super popular in the 60s. Divorced his first wife in 1984. Known for his delivery with his terrible cockney accents. Cheated on his first wife with another woman.

  40. I lived for a while in the small Alabama town Jim Nabors is from. There is no acknowledgement of him at all. All because he was gay. So sad.

  41. Couldn't be Don Adams because "he missed it by this much."

  42. This is old news. It’s Jerry Lewis. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4882456/Jerry-Lewis-illegitimate-child-lives-street.html. Dear Nty: This ‘I Am Not A Robot’ verifier is a pain in the a**. It can take 3 minutes and far too many confirmation screens to wade through; makes commenting alot more effort than it’s worth. Bah.
