Blind Item #1

The streaming giant just made a rare change, far too late, for one of its shows.  This particular evil show has probably contributed to more real world tragedy than anything else, in the history of mass entertainment.

  10. Just seen Netflix has removed the suicide scene from 13 reasons why, probably that, absolute shame, my heart goes out to all of those with mental health issues or who have spent any time at all in that dark, lonesome place x

  11. Fucking lame. Suicide is blamed on everything but hopelessness, I spent three weeks calling therapists they had waiting lists until next year. That's why people lose hope, not some Netflix show. We have been fed stranger danger and macho man bullshit so much we can't talk about our feelings without seeming weak. One thing that doesn't take time to get into is drugs. It's hand in glove.

  12. I doubt some angsty Netflix episode generated more pain than, say, Triumph of the Will.

  13. People depressed often watch sad and depressing things which in turn make their depression worse kind of way to be a confirmation bias that the whole world is as shit as they see it. Depressing shows and scenes reinforce their hopelessness and Women especially do this (listen to sad music, tv shows isolate themselves and cry).,

The problem is that it was a teen show with the target audience aimed at teenagers vs. other graphic suicide scenes in movies/ tv where it was aimed to adults. Depression and suicide has been on the rise (I blame social media and lack of a actual human interaction) in schools and they really did not that graphic scene in that show. Also, I swear I have read of at least 2/3 teenagers who have offed themselves and said their inspiration was 13 reasons Why. Just because you can do something....does not mean that you should. And graphic teenage suicide aimed at a teenage audience is one of them.

And, no. I am not some snowflake...the exact opposite of it.

  14. Isn't that the blog that has never seen a suicide that it can't turn into a murder?

    Kurt Cobain
    Chris Cornell
    Anthony Bourdain
    Avicii
    Mark Salling, etc.

That's pretty rich to blame Netflix when you can't help using suicides for publicity...

  15. 2/3 of teen suicides specifically said this show was the cause?

    Highly unlikely.

  16. I meant 2 -3 INDIVIDUAL stories online. Not 2/3 of all teenage suicides. LOL

  17. Oh Enty.
You need to get with ALL the Enty's before you write something so tone deaf.

  18. Welp. we'll see if he passes that one thru.
Congrats on getting us moderated again.
I have to say, I always thought I'd play a bigger role in getting banned.
    I shall try harder

  19. I'm glad I grew up in a time when there was not 24 hour social media, 24 news, 24 hour access to streaming, 24 hour everything. Brains, emotions, and bodies need a break - and these 24 hour cycles don't allow it. No wonder kids and everyone else are so screwy these days.

  20. Teenage Suicide dont do it!

  21. Probably Romeo and Juliet inspired more suicides than any Netflix show.

  22. James Howlett - I hope you are feeling better. Life is difficult. It helps to have someone to talk to. All the best.

  23. Why is this a blind item? I mean it's just publicly reported news.

  24. Aren't most teen suicides due to closeted teen's unable to deal with their environment? Homophobia is a killer.

  25. After two years, though? Is this just a PR stunt?

  26. If only Climate Change, Racism and all criminal activities can be blamed on Netflix, we can absolve the human race of free will and individual decision making power! I always knew I didnt become a great scientist bcoz of outside factors. Me not taking an interest in science and not working hard enough was never a factor. It feels so good to be finally vindicated!

  27. Guess they didn't learn from East Enders. Many years ago, there was a suicide scene and that was blamed for a spike in suicides in the UK.

I don't think teenagers need to see a suicide scene enacted. It's complicated enough being a teenager.

But that's Netflix for ya - no moral code. They've used the train explosion from the Lac Mégantic tragedy in 3 (I believe) shows. One of them was Bird Box.

  29. Donald Trump & Fox are responsible for hate crimes, death threats and normalizing white supremacy. Why can't we ban them?

  30. More damage than one of Kenny Ortega or Dam Schneider's shows?

    Hyperbole much?

  31. But really though, someone just go through a scene by scene play of any new Netflix series, and identify the lessons taught in each scene. Figure out the morals behind the main moral plot, and you'll see just how weeeird Netflix has been lately.
Example: find me a bad guy in the series "Black summer". Just get a whole list of all of the bad guys. Then look at a list of all the good guys.

It's literally just 'evil white people stereotypes.' Vs minorities.

  32. A couple of years ago, during the first season of this show, a dear friend's daughter tried to commit suicide. Thankfully, she was saved, but the dr. came out and asked the parents if she was a fan of the show, bc they (a hospital in a large suburb of Chicago) had had a huge uptick (she gave alarming stat at the time) of suicides& attempts since it began airing. The daughter DID watch the show, but was also going through a dramatic breakup. So, I don't think anyone would say that this show is causing suicides, but, it is geared towards teens, and showed suicide as both a release of one's own pain and a way to make others take notice/regret the hurt they had caused. I don't think teens (or many adults) have a full arsenal of coping mechanisms, so why air something that glorifies the worst option?

  33. I think Euphoria is way worse

  34. Amazon recast Julia Roberts in Homecoming??

  35. B-but media has absolutely zero influence on people’s behavior whatsoever! Nobody ever follows media generated trends, spouts tv show catchphrases, takes fashion cues from shows/movies, nope not at all!

You know what’s to blame? GUNS. That’s right! The existence of guns out there (where most people never see them or know anyone who owns any), causes all problems! Oh and Trump. Don’t forget him. Now let’s all get back to watching violent, disturbing, perverse shit all day long every day and blame everyone and everything else but the things WE like and don’t want to have to give up, face, or examine. 👍🏻

  36. It "has probably contributed to more real world tragedy than anything else, in the history of mass entertainment"? Pretty sure "Birth of a Nation" has it beat.

    ReplyDelete
  37. There is about two triggering scenes on this show and it didn't cause mass tragedies...Hyperbole much? There are shows geared towards young adults with constant violence and no one says a peep. I am especially surprised this one garnered so much attention. Have any of you watched Euphoria? Every other Scene in ONE EPISODE has triggering glorifications of so much "evil". There are plenty of warnings just like there are with drugs its up to the people to moderate themselves.

  38. @ karma police - exactly! I don't do drugs or self injure but that show with all it's pretty editing and artsy stills was making me want to pop fenta and see what my blood looks like, and I'm a grown adult.

  39. Truly striking on this site, is the fact that anyone who hazards a guess that Trump is involved in a blind, or is critical of him in any way, they are immediately accused of having TDS. It smacks of gaslighting, or redirection at the very least.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Junebug

What's impressive is that these people think it's smart to always yell the same phrase, without any kind of imagination. Otherwise, they have a point when someones claims that Trump is involved in a blind. For two years, the blinds hear have gone at great length not to implicate him in any capacity. It may be tempting to connect him with some of the events described in some blind, but the site wouldn't try to criticize him or to offend his supporters. You can even say that it has become some kind of a "safe place" to them...

But yeah, TDS is supposed to be the ultimate retort against commenters the same way "So and so is a pedo" is automatically used when they want to discredit a celebrity.
