An Amazing Story

This morning I found myself amazed at the story of survival of Bahia Bakari and wanted to share it with you. Bahia is a 14 year old French girl and is the only survivor of the plane that crashed in the Indian Ocean yesterday. Despite having a broken collarbone and lots of other bumps and bruises, the girl who can barely even swim managed to hold onto a piece of the airplane after she was ejected during the crash.

She held on for 13 hours through a storm and the night until she was spotted by rescue planes. Apparently she is going to recover physically 100%, but keeps calling out for her mother who is believed to have died in the crash along with another 152 people. She is in a hospital right now and is with her father. She and her mother were on their way to visit family when the plane crashed.

How sad that she is calling out to her mom. I do hope she will get thru this.

  5. i can't even begin to speculate as to how anyone would survive a crash like this.

it really is one of the most incredible things i've ever read about.

imagine how truly terrifying it would be to at one moment be sitting in a plane with over 150 other people and the next moment be all alone, floating in a gigantic ocean and in a storm no less, clinging to a piece of the wreckage.

i hope she heals mentally just as well as she's expected to physically....

  6. That's some gutsy kid!

Anybody want to bet she never gets on a plane again, though?

  8. It's amazing that she's alive, but her survivor's guilt is going to be overwhelming. I hope she gets lots of really good therapy.

  9. emailchallenged, that was the original rumor, but they found that it was a 14-year-old girl instead of a 5-year-old boy. The original report may have come from someone who didn't see her clearly.

  10. Oh my heavens. That breaks my heart about her calling out for her mom. I hope she can get some stringent therapy.

  11. Those planes are supposed to be awful. People call it a cattle plane because so many people have to stand up for hours to make that trip (no seats for some!), add to it that they're rickety and in desperate need of repair! Stunning that she survived.

  13. The truly sad thing about this is that even though she survived, her mom died. That will always overshadow everything else.

  14. Heartbreaking, and yet amazing.

  15. You know what saddens me more? The fact there will only be 15 comments on this story -- a story of true heroism, whereas Lohan's collar bone will likely get 150. The world's priorities are totally skewed in the wrong direction.

But I love you, Ent. I do. You know what I mean....

  16. After seeing this report on the news this evening my son comment, "Boy, that sure is a different kind of news." I thought he was talking about the newscast itself then I realized what he meant - there aren't enough stories we hear of someone surviving something or some kind of good to come out of something tragic.

  17. Yemenia is a shit airline .. but ironically .. that is what might have contributed to saving that little girl.

They have been sited numerous times for no or non-functioning seat belts in their aircraft. Sounds like her seat didn't have one or it was not functioning properly .. thereby saving her.

I hope she will be okay emotionally as well as physically. She is off to a good start .. that is for sure.

Too bad EL already has his donation charity sorted .. we could have voted to send it to her.

  18. I believe that other passenger families will tell her to have NO guilt and just move on with her life. She is very special, and obviously God said no, to her. He had other human plans for her. That's wonderful.

  19. Collective hug to that little one {}. Thank goodness she still has her Dad. It is so hard to let go of your Mom. :(

  22. Jamie's Girl, I know some people are inspired by a near-death experience, and it makes their lives extra precious. I hope that happens for her!

  23. I too hope she is not racked with survivors guilt. The part that saddens me about these type of stories is that we are amazed and happy for this girls heroic tale, however when the camera's leave she still has to go on with her life. I am putting forth a huge burst of positive energy her way. She will need it. I am sending a mothers love her way :)
