This comedic actor is most famous for playing the fast talking title character on this TV series from the early days of television which had a failed movie reboot in the 90's. He also was in movies including this comedy epic that starred almost all known comedic actors at the time, another film based on a popular Broadway comedy, as well as a few Disney films. Throughout his life, he struggled with a severe gambling addiction. So bad in fact both of his wives and his daughters (one did some acting herself) had to offer themselves as sexual collateral when he couldn’t pay his debts.

Double reboot for Silvers. Beverly Hillbillies (1993) and Sgt. Bilko (1996.) Daughter Cathy was an actress (Happy Days.) Publicly acknowledged his gambling addiction. So nice to know this legend of my grandparents era was pimping out his family while my grandfather worried about claiming the wrong mileage deduction on his taxes every year.

ReplyDeleteIt's ironic that gambling addicts are addicted to losing. Like hey dude, if losing is your specialty you might want to avoid betting. Perhaps you might have better luck at drug abuse, sex addiction, or the dirtiest of the dirty, Magic The Gathering, the cards the cards!

To be fair Bilko was an astonishinly funny show. How many other comedies - TV or Movie - from over 60years ago make you laugh out loud today.

My first thought was Don Adams, too. He was at the Playboy mansion playing poker every night, or so it's been said.

ReplyDeleteOnce I spent an evening playing some card gambling game with two others, and betting was pennies.
Nearly made me brain dead by the end of the evening.
And they did it every night for weeks.
I never looked at them the same way ever again.
Not Don Adams. The Get Smart reboot was in 2008 and the Inspector Gadget animated series was not in the 'early days'.
ReplyDelete@MrsF2U....Jackie Gleason wasn't a gambler but he did have another kind of addiction, he was a book buyer and spent a great deal of his money on his collection. When he died some went to a university but most of the older volumes were aquired by ......the Vatican.
ReplyDeleteJackie had perhaps the largest and most valuable private collection of Occult/Paranormal/UFO books in the world at the time of his death.
Phil Silvers was brilliant and Sgt. Bilko was one of the funniest shows ever.
