It almost happened. The role that really set up Johnny Depp and launched him into his man crush thing with Tim Burton almost didn't happen. In a recent interview, Johnny said that he really wanted the lead role in Edward Scissorhands, but that he studio had its heart set on Tom Cruise. They really liked Johnny, but apparently they wanted a huge star, and Tom Cruise was the it guy then. Look how times have changed Tommy boy.
The studio went so far as to offer Tom Cruise the role and told Johnny that it was close but Tom had got the part. Well, the next day, the studio called and said they had a change of heart, and they felt Tom Cruise wasn't edgy enough for the role.
Although I'm sure the studio was just blowing sunshine up Johnny's ass, the thing is they actually got it right. Can you actually imagine Tom Cruise in that role? That would have been an absolute disaster.

cannot even fathom it.
i have seen the porntastic Edward Penis Hands and THAT i can see Tommy in.
THANK YOU studio executives for your wise change of heart!!! it would not be the classic it is today had it been tommy girl in the starring role...
LOL @ jax...edward penis hands sounds tailor made for tom cruise...hahaha
Tom Cruise definitely was the it boy at that time, and every studio wanted him for every role. I find it hard to believe that the studio deemed Tommy not suitable, but that probably Tommy and/or his agents backed out of it for something bigger. That's just the studio execs' egos talking out of their asses. No way they would have passed up the chance to have Tommy Boy in one of their movies back then. They were and still are, idiots.
I think Tom just wanted to play a hairdresser.. then chickened out.
They mighta been blowin' sunshine up his ass, but they were still right: Johnny is edgy, and they needed someone edgy.
I am in no way disagreeing that Johnny Depp was perfect for the part. But I think you're giving the studio and/or producers too much credit. I would say Tim Burton had more to do with that casting than the studio who probably would have cast Tommy in "Pretty Woman" if they could have figured out a way to make Julia's role male instead of female.
I personally think Winona Ryder probably threw a fit and that convinced them. Winona had a lot of "pull" back in those days.
BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA!!! Ooooh, >wiping the eyes< God that was good. I'm sure the studio did want Tom, and yes, it would have been ANOTHER absolute disaster. Thank you, Tim B, Winona, whoever.
Can you actually imagine Tom Cruise in that role?
I have trouble imagining that Tom Cruise even exists.
I'd actually like to see Johnny Depp star in the biopic of Tom Cruise.
