Blind Items Revealed - Old Hollywood

September 21, 2013

Which former A-list Oscar winning actress and singer was arrested when she was a teen for forging a prescription for her actress mother? She told the pharmacist that she was buying the pills for herself and her name was on the prescription, but in fact they were prescribed for her mother. The police took the teen to her mom's house and confiscated the prescription pad. They then let the teen and the mom off with a warning.

Liza Minelli/Judy Garland

Ugh. Poor Liza. Never really had a lasting sobriety chance.

I think universally everyone got this correct. This would be a punishable with jail offense now!

A little bit off topic - but isn't one of the characters in Valley of the Dolls supposed to be based on Judy Garland? Haven't read the book in a long time, so don't remember which one.

@Silje. Yes. Neeley.
(and I haven't read it in 40 years. where did that come from?)

We should all feel empathy for Garland. The Hollywood machine chewed her up and spit her out. The studio head got her hooked on speed and sleeping pills to getout of her what they needed. I will always look at Judy with a profound sadness.

Really fucking sad....

VotD movie is awful in comparison to the book. I was so geared up to watch it when I was in high school, since I was utterly obsessed with the book since middle school. Saw it and was like wtf is this garbage.

Off-topic but kinda related, when I was in 5th I read a rather inappropriate book with a main character's name listed as "January". I had no idea up until a week ago that Once Is Not Enough, was the book, let alone that it was another Jacqueline Susann novel. Apparently that book is where Ms. Jones's mother got the name as well.

Now I really have to read Valley of the Dolls again, had forgotten about how GOOD it is, a least for a gossip lover like me :)

@Oopsy_Daisy what's the book Once Is Not Enough about? Would you recommend it?

Ok, another question about Valley of the Dolls and then I'm gonna stop before this turn into a book club :)
from what I remember from the book, everyone of the girls were obsessed with being skinny, and they dieted down to like 80 lbs. I might be wrong here, because I use the metric system, but isn't that like really skinny? Like Nicole Richie blue bikini skinny? Can't imagine anyone back in the 30's/40's looking like that..?

Loved the book, hated the movie of One Is Not Enough.

Susan Hayward killed it in Valley of the Dolls. Sharon Tate was so sixties beautiful.

Poor Judy - so incredibly talented and so used and abused all of her life. Liza's not quite as talented but no slouch and she's a wreck as well.

There's a lot of sadness in that family.

I just checked the book, and about halfway through, Neely's husband (at that time) Mel tells Jennifer that he's worried because Ted Casablancas wants Neely to lose 15 pounds, and she was then 118 pounds and 5'5". (He calks that "a nice weight.") I don't remember the weights that the girls get down to, but I don't think they were quite as extreme as 80 pounds. Perhaps I'll reread it to be certain. ;-)

I thought Once Is Not Enough was a better book than Valley, but not as over the top fun.

The movie of Once was beautifully shot with a great cast but left out all the drug use that was naturally in a Susann novel. Pretty dull.
