Your Turn

With Beatles and iTunes billboards everywhere around town, it got me to thinking, what is your favorite Beatles song? Or do you even care that Apple finally got permission to sell their songs?

Huge Beatles' fan, and I couldn't even come close to chosing one favorite, but a couple that spring immediately to mind are Happiness is a Warm Gun, Lady Madonna, While My Guitar Gently Weeps and side 2 of Abbey Road.

I'm THRILLED the Beatles' catalog is on iTunes.

Little Miss Smoke and Mirrors said...

Solid list, Dana.

I still am a Stones girl but my favorite Beatles song? "Why don't we do it in the road..."

LOVE that it's on iTunes.

and I hate to admit it, but I love You Won't See Me. Mostly because it reminds me of a fun summer. I didn't even know it was the Beatles.....me --> clueless!

Top 3

Let it Be
Come Together
Here, There and Everywhere

Don't care lol

I'll go with the "Side 2 of Abbey Road."

However I've got a spot in my heart for "I Want To Hold Your Hand" because it was the very first conversation I ever had with a girl about sex when my pretty next door neighbor explained to me that the song wasn't about holding hands.

hmm, tough call.

i'm glad they are on itunes, but even better to listen on my dad's original records

I don't need iTunes to get Beatles on my iPod.
Sorry, Steven P. Jobs
Top picks:

I Saw Her Standing There
Lovely Rita
Eleanor Rigby

and post Beatles:
#9 Dream
1985
Photograph

among many others

Little Miss Smoke and Mirrors said...

1985! Great one! So was Photograph, but I'd have to go for Mind Games as my Lennon post-Beatles pick.

My favorites change depending on my mood. In college I slow danced with a cute guy to And I Love Her.....Bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky, I know this love of mine, will never die....Damn John and Paul could write, but cute guy and me were not to be.

Bonnie Blue said...

Hey Jude...I have always just LOVED the song.

mooshki said...

Too many to list. But I downloaded their music a long time ago. I usually pay for all my music, but if they aren't going to provide a legal option for me, then fuck 'em. This kind of manipulation of the market pisses me off.

Oh my...so many to choose from.
-I've Just Seen A Face
-A Day in the Life
-Martha My Dear (so sue me...I had an Old English for many years)
-Eleanor Rigby
-Penny Lane
-I Saw Her Standing There
-When I'm 64
-A Day in the Life
-Got to Get You into My Life
-Here, There, and Everywhere

As you can see, I tend to prefer the McCartney aspect of Lennon/McCartney.

Even though I already own all of this, I'm thrilled it's on iTunes. A friend's hubby is a big cheese there, and I was excited to know before it was announced.

Yes it is

childeroland said...

1. Yesterday
2. Hard Day's Night
3. The Night Before
4. Something
5. Glass Onion
6. Let It Be
7. A Day In the Life
8. Help!
9. Paperback Writer
10. Only a Northern Song

And tomorrow this list will be completely different.

Stacy said...

1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
2. Girl
3. Norwegian Wood
4. Fool on the Hill
5. Something

And no I don't care that its on iTunes now. 6-7 years ago I would have been ecstatic, but I spent the time and money to re-collect every Beatles song digitially, so now I don't need it on iTunes.

I love the Beatles. I grew up watching their movies when I was little. Love love love. I can never decide, but I do love me some Here Comes the Sun, I've Just Seen a Face, Sgt. Pepper's, She Came in Through the Bathroom Window ...

I'll be here all day if I keep going.

Stacy said...

George was my favorite Beatle. Lennon is so overrated.

New Life and Attitude said...

Never been a huge Beatles fan, but I don't mind them. I pretty much like the Sgt. Pepper's songs (am I big dork because I actually like the movie with the BeeGee's and had the soundtrack?). The Long and Winding Road and Strawberry Fields Forever are probably my favorites if I have to pick.

Jackie said...

I love the Beatles! But I hate iTunes, so I'm meh about the availability. I had the CDs already anyway.

My favorite is "Something." George is my favorite Beatle! But I also love

When I'm 64
Elenor Rigby
Octopus's Garden
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Here Comes the Sun
I'm So Tired
Within You Without You
etc etc etc...

was my favorite...

iheartjacksparrow said...

It has to be "I Want to Hold Your Hand." That was the first Beatles' song I ever heard, and I played the single (no iPods in 1964) over and over and until it was virtually unplayable.

Anyone here seen Across The Universe? That movie made me realize how timeless the Beatles' tunes are, even the ones from the really early days. Heartily recommend.

Treesap-Covered Lady, the Humanist said...

Yeah, I had think outside of the box for getting Beatles tunes years ago too...

Got to Get You Into My Life
Happiness is a Warm Gun
- I Will
- While My Guitar Gently Weeps (George!)
- Something (George! Again!)
- Eleanor Rigby
- Let It Be
- You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
- I've Just Seen a Face
- Two of Us
-

I think one of my favorite memories was when I played Beatles Rock Band with my parents--it was a lot of fun.

Helter Skelter is the only Beatles song that I find remotely listenable. I've always thought them to be overrated, sorry.

nancer said...

i saw the beatles when i was 15 and have been a confirmed beatlemaniac since the first time i heard them.

there are too many songs to choose a favorite from, but i still listen to side 2 of 'abbey road' incessantly. it's a symphony and a masterpiece.

if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to name a favorite, though, it would be 'the long and winding road.'

Yes it is...

Top fav is "Julia." And hearing John Lennon sing "Twist and Shout" is always a pleasure. Also, "Here, There and Everywhere." And "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and a lot more.

I always said I'd never marry unless the guy had all the Beatles albums. I was wrong on both counts. But now I can get them on iTunes, so I'm happy.

Meg said...

@RocketQueen - I LOVED that movie. It was beautiful.

How can we pick just one???

Hey Jude & Let It Be

And yes, when they announced it I yelled: FINALLY! Although my husband & both already had albums loaded into iTunes, so it really didn't affect us.

musesx9 said...

5. Strawberry Fields Forever
6. Yellow Submarine

10. While my guitar gently sleeps

@mark please tell me I misunderstood tie comments about I Wanna Hold your hand!!! Sex???

I too don't care about itunes. I don't even own an ipod or a personal mp3 player. It is hard to pick a favorite--
Ticket To Ride
You're Gonna Lose that Girl
While My Guitar gently weeps
Hey Jude
Eight Days a Week
And I love Her
Can't Buy me Love
and quite possibly the saddest song ever--The Long And Winding Road

There is no way to choose. Depends on my mood. My mother had all of the early Beatle albums, and I basically grew up listening to them. My husband and I both joke that we have succeeded as parents by having two teenagers that LOVE the Beatles as much as we do. And I still pull pot my albums to stare at them.

MadLyb said...

Dear Lord, I love The Beatles, and remember crying when I heard John Lennon died. I love your guyses (yeah, I know) lists! My favorite Beatles song is "Hey Jude". Who'da thunk that a repetitive song would be so catchy and never get boring? Plus there's a heartwarming story behind it. My square mom (who thought Elvis was vulgar) used to play Beatles tunes on her guitar. They are the undisputed, greatest Rock 'n Roll band ever, IMO. Most bands go from hard core to mellow. The Beatles were relatively mellow and went hardcore.

I really can't make a list - "The White Album" was phenomenal and got me through a large part of my teenage angst. Then there's "Abbey Road" with all the medleys when they were breaking up. And the psychedelic, "Revolver" - Tomorrow Never Knows, incredible bass on Taxman. No, I cannot make a top ten list. After "Hey Jude", I'm torn.

Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, When I'm 64...I am in love with every Beatles song though, and I love that I caught my son rocking out to them when he was about 1 year on camera without knowing that I was taping him.

They make me so happy that I cry when I hear them. But a lot of music does that to me. What can I say, I'm a freak.

I am sitting here looking at my framed copies of four of their album covers: With the Beatles, Rubber Soul, Abby Road and Beatles for Sale. Love them.

Stacey Charter said...

it is hard to pick just one but if I have to I will say Blackbird. Or norweigan Wood.. No Blackbird thats my favorite. When I was in college i lived on a coed wing and we were like one big family. Almost every night 2 of the guys would play blackbird and sing it as we were all getting ready for bed or trying to fall asleep. Yes you could hear it on the whole floor. Ahhh good times. Definitely Blackbird

shakey said...

Really hard to pick one.

You're gonna lose that girl
This boy
And I love her
Got to get you into my life
Rock'n'Roll music
Hello, goodbye
If I fell (makes me feel so sad)
I'll follow the sun
She's leaving home
You've got to hide your love away

among many others

I was about 10 when I first heard Abbey Road--I sang along with the whole thing but especially loved "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." I liked the childish sound of the tune that contrasted with the horror of the lyrics. I consider the song my introduction to irony and cynicism.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

I never really got into them whole hog, but I really liked Hey Jude back in the day.

Mostly because of St. Jude being the Patron Saint of lost causes. I liked the idea of that a whole lot.

Sorry.

My dad was a huge Beatles fan - in fact, he pretty much only liked the Beatles *L*. He became very ill with cancer and towards the end of his life, when he was all zonked out on painkillers and seemed nervous and confused, my mom would play a Beatles record and it calmed him down, he would even sit up and tap his foot a little to the music. Maybe it would have worked with any music, but the Beatles were really special to him. At his funeral, a friend played "Yesterday" and "I'll Follow The Sun".

dbfreak said...

You guys already covered many of the songs I love so I'm going to try to add some I don't think I've seen listed yet : )

1. Baby You're a Rich Man
2. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
3. You Never Give Me Your Money

My Dad got me into them when I was about 12 - I used to listen to his copies of the White album and I think he also had the Red and Blue albums too. So when I got married, I decided that our father/daughter dance song would be "I am the Walrus." That was pretty cool but turned out to be *extremely* hard to dance to ;)

Please don't make me choose! I love the Beatles so much, and have had to resist the urge to buy the catalog on iTunes, even though I own all the CDs.

A few (current) favorites:

1. In My Life
2. Got to Get You Into My Life
3. A Day in the Life
4. I've Just Seen a Face
5. Hey Jude
