Whitney Houston Died With Valium, Xanax & Booze In Her System

The coroner report in Whitney Houston's death has been opened and Whitney died with Valium and Xanax and booze in her system. She really liked to be down didn't she? What about the crack? So far, there are no indications she had any illegal drug in her system which means she was medicating on her own which never works out well in the end. She probably knew how much crack she could smoke but you never know how your body will react each day to prescriptions and booze, especially if you can't remember when you took some last. The coroner says her heart stopped because of all the suppressants and Valium dependency. This is why the only suppressant I take is NyQuil.

No one should be suprised. Addict moves on from illegal drugs to legal drugs. Which society tolerates.

Big surprise.

Valium and Xanax with alcohol? Jeez, that is just so stupid and she paid for it dearly.

Lovely picture.

"there are no indications she had any illegal drug in her system which means she was medicating on her own..." I don't understand what he means by this. Valium and Xanax are both prescription medications, correct?

So both Whitney and Amy Winehouse died of "socially accepted" drugs in their system. It just goes to show all the drugs that they had subjected themselves to over the years just weakened their bodies immeasurably. So sad....

The only surprising thing to me, is that there was no crack or coke. Enty-look into the story that her "family" is going to sell the funeral footage as a tribute DVD. It's tacky enough that there is an auction of one of her dresses, but this story.....Tacky to a whole other level.

Amy in MI said...

Medicating on your own is getting the drugs from doctors and deciding how and when you are going to take them. I say this cause reports say she had prescriptions

timebob said...

@Amy Enty is saying she was taking more pills then the Dr. perscribed her to take.

She overdosed herself.

How do we know she was exceeding the prescribed dosage? She may have been prescribed the layers of meds to counter some serious anxiety issues, especially leading up to major media exposure at the Grammys. We need to hear from her physicians and the police findings after reading her medical records.

Prescription drugs scare the crap out of me. When I had my surgery I was afraid to take the pain meds. I hate that she went this way, but I agree that we hear it more and more as time goes by.

The experts say the legal drugs are worse than the street drugs because people seem to think it's ok to up the doses, just crazy.

DixieTheNoble82 said...

Such a shame she wasn't able to find true peace & be well while she was still here. I hope she may rest in peace eventually.

I think a lot of addicts fool themselves into thinking well if I am taking 'script drugs i'm not a junkie.

You are a junkie no matter what drug you take on the street or off.

You take too much too fast, you die.

This came from an "exclusive" from Radar Online, which I don't trust at all. Toxicology tests takes weeks to get back, and if you read the story it even says tox results wont be back for a couple more weeks, they are just going ahead and saying this after TMZ reported these type of pill bottles were found in her room, so when the tests come back they can say they were first.

My brother died at the age of 40 from a drug given to him in the hospital. I can't remember the name, but it was a drug very similar to morphine. He had an accident years prior that left his body very broken. He packed on a lot of weight after that (he weighed 315 lbs!) We believe it was actually a combination of the pain killer and perhaps sleep apnea.

These drugs are scary and can definitely kill. I can 100% verify that my brother NEVER took an illegal drug in his life annd NEVER abused prescription pain medication. In fact, he took great pains in weaning himself off of medication through several years of surgeries due to his accident.

The fact is that his body was worn down from factors outside of his control due to the accident. When the body is worn down, something as simple as taking a strong sedative can be deadly, so it isn't necessarily that particular drug or drug combination that killed you, although that is the primary cause, but the secondary cause is the underlying condition of the body prior to taking the drugs.

In Whitney's case, I suspect she had taken this mixture of drugs on hundreds of occassions without incident, or perhaps some "close calls." But her body had had enough and was too weakened to come back from this particular event.

I am going to put money that the level of drugs in her system is not going to be much higher than therapeutic levels and that her BAC is going to be relatively low. It is going to be the combination of the drugs, alcohol and previous health conditions that contributed all together to cause her death.

(So technically not an overdose, in my view.)

Its a sad story that so many of these celebs r self medicating with prescription drugs. Unfortunately this is not the first and not the last.

It's so easy to OD. If you're on your own, nobody paying attention, it's way too easy. I always have to put the meds by the clock with pen and paper so I don't forget when I took them last. Any body can only take so much. It's just so sad.

True story...I was just taking vicodin for a cramps and minor surgery last week (Mon - Sunday about three pills a day) and I am actually going through withdrawls right now - bad sleep, cold sweats, fatigue. Prescriptions are a lot more potent and harmful than people give them credit for.

Unknown said...

this isn't from the coroner's report. This is gossip that Perez had on his site claiming the family said she took all of those drugs....

califblondy said...

After surgery I took Vicodin for the first time and I knew by the second day that I liked it way too much. Put the right person with the wrong prescription drug can make anyone an addict.

Moosefan - I read that the family is trying to get some fast cash for Bobbi Kristina by selling the funeral video. As far as the auction, I think that someone other than the family has the rights to the gown and earrings.

valium and xanex(alprazolam)are both benzos, not a good idea to take them together, especially since alprazolam is always listed on the interaction list for valium. Both are a bad decision when coupled with addiction issues, as well. Add that to the fact that you are supposed to avoid alcohol when taking either because it increases side effects (as all 3 are CNS depressants)including slowing down or stopping of breathing.

Most of you are probably too young to remember Karen Ann Quinlan, but I'm old enough. I never even sniff alcohol within 24 hours of taking a benzodiazepine. The smallest dose of Xanax (0.25) will allow me to sleep 10 hours straight. That shit is powerful. Ditto Valium.

parissucksliterally said...

If you are taking Xanax, why would you need Valium? Or vice versa? Who gives someone a prescription for both?

She must have had multiple doctors prescribing shit for her.

I hate to say this, but Dr. Drew was right. He was on Anderson Cooper 360 a couple of times last week and each time he begged everyone watching to be very aware of the legally prescribed drugs they were taking and what their affects were. He mentioned Heath Ledger, Whitney (probably), and Anna Nicole Smith all died from using prescribed drugs. He believed that Whitney was clean from the coke and had just moved on to alcohol and xanax as replacements, even though it was a different kind of 'high'. He also said that prescription drug addicts were harder to rehab than drug addicts, and that this problem was growing very quickly in the US. It was strange, he wasn't his usual kind-of-obnoxious self, and honestly, he kind of scared me.

Well bummer, I take Xanax for sleep nightly and drink wine as well most evenings b/c I have severe sleep anxiety. I had surgery for spinal fusion and was on Valium as well as percoset, and taking Xanax. So Valium is a very good muscle relaxer/anti muscle spazam medication and Xanax is for calming anxiety. Both benzos but have different effects on the body.
I heard Whitney would always take Xanax before a performance to calm her nerves. I am sure the beer and champers helped that too although that would just put me to sleep as it did her. Probably her body was in a bad state from at least two previous nights of total partying which was documented and the normal amount of meds she could take was just too much after her benders.

It's all how your nod metabolizes it. The poster who mentioned that their brother died from a drug similar to morphine. It was probably Dilaudid, which I
Have to get injections of often because
Of crohns disease flare ups. They will not give me Dilaudid ifmy blood pressure is under 100 systolic or if the respiratory rate is decreased. With someone with sleep apnea he hould have been checked
On within 30 minutes after being give the drugs
Just because a drug is highly abused doesn't mean it shouldn't be prescribed. Thank god the docs and nurses at my local ER know me. Cause there are a ton of drug seekers that ruin it for the rest of us.

When I had my hysterectomy, they decided to give me an epidural, before the epidural they gave me a muscle relaxant. The muscle relaxant never worked. I got the epidural and had to hold myself still, the anaesthesiologist never even asked me if the muscle relaxant had worked. He then added a small amount of morpheine to my epidural, and when I recovered it made me sick. My self-medicating stuff had morpheine in it. I told the nurses I wouldn't take it because I had vomited from the morpheine, but they didn't swap out my medicine, so I couldn't use it. I ended up with a suppository which was bliss. After that experience, give me pethidene any day. You don't know how drugs will affect you until you use them.

I had some surgery this month but used hypnosis prior to the surgery to keep the pain level down. Despite the fact that I would answer 0-2 when asked what my pain level was, the nurses kept asking if I wanted Percocets or morphine.
I didn't even fill the prescription for Tylenol 3s that they gave me when I left the hospital.

Super strange how no one is dying of crack or cocaine these days - it's all the pills combos, etc...

Thank you Enty for using a lovely photo of Whitney. Prefer to remember her in this image.

@weezy -- ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

"How do we know she was exceeding the prescribed dosage? She may have been prescribed the layers of meds by diff docs..."

Never met an addict eh? Must be a sheltered life you live.

Amy in MI said...

It's actually not as good for your body to NOT take pain meds when you recover.. It slows down your recovery time as your body is working to help the pain vs heal... There's a reason they are offered.. However it's also to know when to take them as prescribed

I've been given various meds in the hospital over the years--demerol was great when I first ended up in the hospital w/severe diverticulitis, in that it really knocked the pain out; PCA morphine helped after surgery, and a shot of it was great when I landed in the ER w/an ovarian cyst, but I didn't love it enough to want to keep doing it. For some reason, though, I don't think percocet really works for me; I think I get better results w/good old ibuprofen. I guess I just don't understand why people take them if they don't need them, because pain relief did not equal fun times for me. JMHO...

Opie said...

I agree, I take Vicodin now for the 10 years of the back issues and now 3 surgeries later. With it I can function, without no way with the pain. I want to be pain free thus the fusion but still not working. When I take it peeps go crazy and want them so bad. I do not know why, just takes me from bad to tolerable. But I hear it is a good high if you are not in pain. The addicts take like 20 a day which is crazy when I have taken like 3 a day for years of the same dose. I try to not take it for as long as possible during the day. I do also drink a little vino to take the edge off though at night, I know bad on me.

Love how everyone has pretty much turned this into an opportunity to describe all the drugs they are taking and their experiences with them.
Everyone thinks their own experience is EXACT and the WAY IT IS.
*sigh*

Lori said...

@Amy in MI- absolutely correct. You should take meds exactly as prescribed for pain. It absolutely has an effect on recovery time. Dr. will tell you that waiting to take meds till you are in a severe amount of pain is the worst way to treat it. Pain is much better controlled when treated at a moderate level.

Btw..I took Dilaudid after surgery last year and it made me feel awful! Nauseated, dizzy, and generally gross....though did take away the pain. I couldnt wait to stop taking them.

LOVE xanax...low prescription though. I think the problem with Xanax is that Dr's give it out too freely. I have 5 other friends and a sibling who went to the Dr's cause they were depressed cause they lost a job, were bored with lives...etc. Instead of suggesting a therapist or explaining it's a part of life, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...he prescribed Xanax.

@parissucksliterally, The benzo drugs are addictive and powerful tranquillizers that were initially approved for 2 to 4 week usage. Used for a week or two, they do diminish anxiety. Used more than a month, they decrease the coping skills of the person taking them, until the person literally cannot handle any difficulty in life, even the smallest. I hate benzo drugs.

Why take both? Xanax has a 4 hour halflife in the body, while Valium has more like a 12 hour halflife. Some of the benzos, like Klonopin, stay in the blood for 30 to 50 hours, and many people are increasingly being given multiple benzos, so that they are on a roller coaster to death.

I always talk to everyone I know who takes benzo drugs, and I show them the research: Using a benzo drug for any reason will result in decreased coping skills, drug dependency, and the loss of years of their life. Because at some point everyone has to go off benzos, either because they learn to cope and to deal with life, or because they die in a bathtub or wreck their car or OD in bed.
