Charisma Carpenter Survived Evil

There is a new show that Charisma Carpenter will be hosting called I Survived Evil. I think they pretty much have an I Survived... for every situation now. Charisma seems to be the perfect host for this show considering she is actually someone who survived evil way back in 1991. She was out with two guys in San Diego and they were swimming at a beach. Suddenly, a man with a gun, who turned out later to be a police officer ordered Charisma to tie up her two male companions. Knowing they would all die if she did that, Charisma refused and the two guys overpowered the gunman who shot them both during the fight. Charisma held on to the attacker's flashlight which led to the conviction of Henry Hubbard Jr., who was sentenced to 56 years in jail. While promoting this show, Charisma has been discussing the incident publicly for the first time. It's crazy. You know she did the right thing but it is so tough to be brave when you are looking at a gun pointed at you. (Thanks Lissette)

Wow, I got goosebumps reading that. What brave people they are!
Also, I did not realize Charisma was about my age. I never watched Buffy, (is that where she's from?)so I don't know much about her.

funny some people panic (me) and others are able to think clearly...good girl.

Cordelia Chase!

Love her! Glad she's still working. I may watch this, but it may also make me hate the human race that much more. Will Angel swoop in and save us all? ;)

Yes Reno, she auditioned For the role of Buffy but apparently creator and producers liked her so much they developed a new character just for her. She's awesome and absolutely beautiful.

Wow, good for her and the guys with her. I'm not sure if I would do the same in her position. Not sure what I would do, but I applaud her for being smart and for knowing/feeling that if she obeyed the attacker that she'd be doomed. Good to know.

I always feel humbled when I hear of people who have survived the most apalling visitations of evil. May God and the Universe always walk side by side with this very brave lady..

I think I will watch. In the article Ms. Carpenter says:

"It's about empowerment, about victims who take fate into their own hands and rescue themselves, or seek justice and find it. It's about heroes, stories of survival. And happy endings!"

I want more heroes in my life!!! Good for you girl for being strong. And the first episode will be about her ordeal on the beach and how she survived.

Amazing. Grateful she and her buddies had the wherewithal to out smart this creature. Strange but doesn't this sound like something the Zodiac Killer would do? Reminds me of the lake Berryessa murder. Creeps me out just thinking about it.

Dia, we can all be Heroes! Just reaching out to others and giving of ourselves makes a Hero to me.

She is a bad ass.

Thanks AuntJess! You are absolutely right! Getting a little teary here...

But now I hear Bette Midler singing "Did you ever know that you're my hero...."

Creepiest unsolved murders are the Keddie murders in N Cali. That story creeps me out.

Outstanding! This makes me like her even more. Fantastic on Buffy (and the only saving grace of Angel, if I may say).
Note to all, if someone pulls a gun, RUN.
If they are going to shoot you, they made the decision before they pulled the gun.

And, in other articles it is discovered that she lived in and collected the rent at the guy's apartment complex. Apparently, she was targeted.

I totally remember this happening. '91 was the year after I graduated from high school, and my ex-boyfriend/ex-husband and I both went to the local junior college and still lived at home with our parents. Not to tmi you guys, but most people around here at that age go to the beach late at night to make out with their significant other because you can't really be doing that at your parents house. This was TERRIFYING at the time, and I'm so glad these guys escaped with their lives. I feel so bad for the girls who were not so lucky (they weren't killed, but several were raped and the guy went out of his way to mess with their minds)

Thank you ABlake for saying to run if anyone pulls a gun. You have to think about this stuff ahead of time so you don't panic in a crisis situation

Amy, I read about the Keddie Murders a few years ago when The Strangers came out. Some site said the movie was loosely, very loosely IMHO, was based on those unsolved murders. Freaky shit.

Really and truly awesome and inspiring!!!!! Wow!!!! My hat is off to her. In a similair vein of not listening to the criminals, my friend was leaving work one night and these guys in a van pulled a gun on her and said," get in". She laughed and kept walking. I told i was amazed, and she said anything they were gonna do to me would be worse than getting shot. People are amazingly clever and resiliant when they need to be.

I just wanted to add, never go to the second location. You are better off fighting where you are then letting them get you to an isolated situation where the jerk has total control. Having written that, no-one knows how they'll react in any given situation. Hope everyone stays safe.

The one benefit to fighting back and surviving is for the rest of your life you know you live because of your on actions. Years before we met, my wife and I each had incidents where we were attacked and we each fought back and escaped. Her attacker still sits on death row and mine has never been found. We look like your average middle aged couple, but we know the truth about ouselves. It is probably what attracted us to each other and why we have such a strong marriage after almost twenty years.

What feral said. In one of the few informative Oprah shows, she had a detective on who gave some very important information on staying safe. One being the aforementioned never get moved to the second location. An interesting statistic he also gave was that if you run from a man with a gun, there is a small chance you will get hit, and an even smaller chance you will be hit in a critical area of your body. Wish I could remember the detective's name...

It's good advice to run away from a person with a gun. Very hard to hit a moving target, and you have no idea of the proficiency of the shooter so duck, and run erratically, screaming fire as you go.

ablake said...

Bowser, bless you and your wife. You are both lucky folks to have survived and found each other. Massive kudos.
Agree about the secondary location, if you get into a vehicle with someone threatening you then odds are you are toast. RUN RUN RUN!! Scream (as was suggested) use your voice as a weapon

Well, you've all seen enough films to know HOW to run from a gunman, haven't you? zig zag!

These stories remind me of a story I heard years later about a friend of my mom's -- this probably happened in the early '60s, before I was born. In those days people were a little more trusting and a guy came to her door saying his car had broken down and could he use her phone. She let him in, only to have him attack and try to choke her. She told my mom that she suddenly had a thought in her head: "No, I'm not going to die today" and started fighting him off, maybe hit him with something, and he fled. I was truly amazed by that story and have been so impressed by her ever since.

In case this post gets revisited more than a previous post did , I wrote something to a commenter last week when a thread turned to scary incidents, but I'm not sure anyone saw it (I usually get to these things too late to be helpful).
She had been confronted as a child while riding her bike and went running up the hill to get away, still carrying her bike, which she now felt was dumb.
If you are attacked, always hold onto your bike or shopping cart or whatever you have, and use it in whatever protective way you can. First of all, it's a scenario the attacker hasn't practiced, and secondly, you are MUCH harder to shove into a van if you have a bicycle or shopping cart "attached" to you.
Stay safe, everyone.

Good for her.

Even better for me 'cause this reminded me just how good she looked when she did that Playboy spread a few years back...

This isn't the first time Charisma has discussed this. I remember her being on Howard Stern in the 90s talking about this situation.
