Christina Applegate Leaves Up All Night

In a statement released yesterday, Christina Applegate announced she was leaving the NBC show Up All Night over creative differences. Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph are staying. The show is not what it started out to be and is going to be dramatically different if it ever gets back on the air, but it is tough to walk away from a network sitcom if there is any chance it will stay on the air. It is not like Christina has had a run of success when she has been given shows so you would think she would have hung on until the bitter end. Will and Christina have had some up and down moments during the run of the show and their relationship is not as warm as it used to be. It is interesting to note that while she specifically thanked Lorne Michaels in her statement, she did not mention any of the cast specifically and just threw them in the same sentence as cast, producers and crew.

I saw this last night and immediately thought of Enty's blinds that fit those two as having an affair. Sad.

Count Jerkula said...

She don't seem like an idiot, so I figure she still has plenty of Married with Children money around that affords her the ability to do this.

Total affair reveal.

She mustve gotten sick of seeing WA and his hot blonde all the time.

Hope shes not star with cancer.

Cathy said...

I thought of that blind when I heard about this last night too. There's a rumor that they want Lisa Kudrow to replace her.

SusanB said...

I think if it were cancer she would have said so. She either was having an affair with WA and broke up or wasn't there a blind about a woman being sexually harassed by her costar?

MISCH said...

Will Arnett is said to be a dick

Anothergrayhare said...

I've never seen the show but I do see that in Labels, under the post, Enty has labelled this one Christina Applegate, Will Arnett. If that's not a reveal, I don't know what is :)

Meanie Rhysie said...

Was it Christina Applegate who was laughing/making fun of River Phoenix when he having seizures when he was dying at the Viper Room? Please, if someone knows differently, let me know because I've disliked her since hearing that. :/

Having said that, I'd always liked her after seeing an interview while she was playing Kelly Bundy. Seemed like a down to earth chick. So, I was shocked and disappointed to hear that she'd been laughing at someone having a seizure.

crapbag said...

I am remembering from when that happened......it was said that she thought River was joking around and had no idea that it was a serious situation.

OKay said...

I'd still like to punch the ABC exec in the face who decided that Samantha Who should be cancelled. That is all.

Pip said...

@meanie, I am guessing Applegate was pretty fucked up on god knows what that night. I don't think that reflects on who she really is.

yodelay said...

As soon as I heard this, I immediately thought of the affair blind!

@meanie, I've never heard that story. She doesn't seem the type to do that.

tracynator said...

Hmmmm. Guess Wil won't behave himself. This would normally be shocking but it seems to confirm Enty's blinds. I've read that Lorne Michaels is a real pain in the butt, too.

Eeekalicious said...

It's too bad she felt her only option was to leave ...

Merlin D. Bear said...

So they're gonna try a "Darren" on this show? No.

Given that she's previously undergone a radical mastectomy due to breast cancer, it's honestly possible she's the answer to the cancer blind. Didn't it say something about remission and recurrence?
If that's the case, my thoughts and prayers to her and her family.

Lizzie du said...

Does anyone have a link to the blinds everyones referring to ?

Christina Applegate danced in the Pussycat Dolls at the Viper Room, so imagine she was pretty good friends with River who used to hang out there a lot. That story had to have been misconstrued. I hope!

There are so few tv shows I watch regularly, but Up All Night was one of them. I loved the show, but it definitely took a different turn when they cancelled Ava's talk show and brought in the guy that played Jack on Will and Grace. I totally thought of Enty's blinds and our guesses when I read this news last night. I still don't want to believe they had an affair because I like them both so much. God, I am taking celebrity news a little too hard this morning!! (Ice/Coco for example)

Sunny said...

Sorry for typos - my husband is trying to rush me out the door. Hello - important gossip afoot!

timebob said...

NBC basically admitted they only renewed the show because of Christina, Will & Maya.

I think they should just put it to bed. They tried all they could but the show just didn't catch on with viewers. And it doesn't have the cult following like 30 Rock did to keep it alive.

annabella said...

something is fishy. and why should she be punished for the affair and not will arnett if that is the explanation?

I tried watching the show a few times this past season and it was just so boring. talented cast, but just boring.

Sherry said...

I think she's more the cancer blind rather than the affair blind. Hope she gets herself well if that is the case. I never watched this show so can't say I'll miss it.

liteNOTSObrite said...

Thjs couldn't be related to the cancer/chemo blind because that was an "all movie actress".

christina said...

I believe the shows creator also left in January.

EmEyeKay said...

If she were ill, I doubt she would have cited "creative differences".

Lisa Kudrow, really? She looks too old to play WA's wife...

prolixe said...

Agree with @liteNOTSObrite, she has done movies but made her name on TV. Glad it's not her with cancer.

I've also heard Will Arnett is a d* on the Fred Armisten level.

Unknown said...

Long time ago (early 1990's) a guy I was dating was friends with Applegate's tutor. She's not super bright (yes, I know, control your surprise)

BTAIM, I like her and I really hope her cancer isn't back.

Also, I can't imagine she needs $$, MWC was on for years and years then syndicated...

Mama June said...

I haven't seen any of this season, but how could they do the show without her? The pulled Ava's show and brought Dude that played Jack on W/G? Huh...that seems weird.

I hope she wasn't having an affair with Will, but I thought if that blind while reading this. :/

The Real Dragon said...

What Fred Armisten is a dick? I dont believe:(

Anna V. Xol said...

If they were having an affair then it is pretty sad to think a marriage got ruined and two little boys had their everyday family life shot to hell. Maybe this is why their shows don't work out. It is dumb as hell to bang a coworker. If i had tv money, I wouldn't screw it up for some cheap lay.

I hope it's not true because I like them both.

katie said...

Just coming here to post that. I loved that show. Jean Smart, Jennifer Esposito and the rest of the supporting cast were great.

Henriette said...

@Vera L
That's funny because she always brings up how much she needs "intellectual stimulation" and New York Times'crossword puzzles.

I think this is a reveal about the affair between costars. I also think this show is dead already. I liked her in Samantha Who? It was a funny show.

SusanB said...

I liked that show she did earlier - I think it was called "Jessie" - saw it in reruns and it always made me laugh.

I don't get all the love for Lisa Kudrow. She may be the nicest person on the planet but she just annoys me. I think it's because she always has the expression on her face like she smells something bad. I just can't watch her.

sprinkles said...

How is that a reveal exactly? Enty labels most of his entries. He specifically mentions both Christina &Will in this story, so it stands to reason that he would include them in his labels.

Sorry, really not trying to be a bitch or stir the pot. Just trying to understand what would make you think it's a reveal.

I always thought her mastectomy was mostly preventative, because her mother had also had breast cancer, and what Christina had was caught early.

All about Eve said...

Are they the reveal for costars having an affair, leaving their spouses and then one of them changing their mind and trying to get back with their spouse? I could see that creating a difficult work environment especially with Will Arnett bringing his hot new blonde to the set.

Educating Mom said...

Agreed. Broke my heart when they cancelled it.

timebob said...

@sprinkles you have to read inbetween the lines sometimes with Enty. He drops hints sometimes to a blind reveal without revealing it.

There was a blind about two costars having an affair.

'not as warm as it used to be'

could be a hint, to a hot affair gone cold. Who knows, it is all just speculation on our ends.

Rhody said...

When I was reading this I was thinking they weren't the affair blind but the one a while back about the 2 co-stars of a comedy that couldn't stand each other. The common guess on that one was Amy Poehler and Rob Lowe.

Rhody said...

And one more thing - Will Arnett has suck a weird plastic look doesn't he? Like Max Headroom or something (if you're under 30 you won't remember who that is!)

Bleu said...

She definitely did make fun of River Phoenix -- and even got down on the ground and thrashed her body duplicating his death throes. But the way I remember it is she did it not at the Viper Room as he was dying but some days afterward to make a point about how bad drugs are, and pretty much everyone thought it was in the poorest taste ever. Never really liked her since.

Bleu said...

I could swear there were even photos published of Applegate on the ground reenacting his death throes.

Susan said...

This show was really fantastic it's first season. I watched every episode. I REALLY loved the Maya Rudolph character.

I watched about four or five epis in the fall, and thought the show COMPLETELY sucked. Plus, Christina Applegate's character just became so grating. I truly don't understand why the network completely switched gears with the show in the second season. Especially with such an amazing cast. It seemed like it was hanging on by a thread each time I watched. I really did not like the addition of the dude who plays Jack from Will and Grace.

Anyway, I haven't watched the show in ages but I don't see how it will continue. This whole thing is so bizarre. I wish someone on the crew or on the inside would fill us in...Pretty please?

Add me to the the list of 10 people who really enjoyed Samantha Who. I feel like the entertainment world just does not know what to do with Christina Applegate.

Bangagong said...

Hmmm. I remembered that River Phoenix situation as at first she thought it was a joke and then when she found it was serious, she got really upset and was trying to describe it to others by acting it out. Not long afterward, she did some dance showcase that used some of those movements because she wanted to give an anti-drug message. I dunno. It seems it is open for interpretation.

Bleu said...

Photo of her reenacting his death throes, apparently at an anti-drug event:

Bleu said...

Yes, it was years ago -- all I was remembering was my visceral reaction at the time, thinking she definitely was making fun of him. Now, with years and years between, it does seem it was clearly an anti-drug performance of sorts. (Maybe it was just too soon or something at the time, or my own personal reaction, I don't remember.)

Bangagong said...

@Amy It looks like we were thinking of the same event. I remember that Star magazine reported on that dance showcase right after it happened (no lie, I read Star all through elementary and secondary school). And I love that you used something from Find a Death. That website is fascinating.

NL said...

All About Eve - I feel like I remember it like you do. She and Will had an affair. Will's marriage broke up but CA decided to stay with Martyn and not tear apart her family. Would probably make an uncomfortable work space - assuming it wasn't even possibly an agreement with her fiance/husband to leave.

Oy! Up there with the Wil .. it is WILL Arnett .. not WIL! Geez .. please don't lump me in with that assh*le.

I am gonna toss my hat into the ring for Blind Reveal, though I hate thinking Christina would do something like that. Not the cheating so much .. but the sleeping with that asshat. Team Amy.

Cornbread said...

This makes me a little sad, we never miss Up All Night (even if it's nowhere near as good as the first season). I hate getting attached to shows that get canned too soon (Old Christine and Gary Unmarried were two of our FAVES).

I don't think they'll replace her with Kudrow, or try to do the show without her. NBC will just drop it.

sprinkles said...

I'm well aware of how blinds work, thank you. I've been a faithful daily reader of this site since it's inception, so I also know how Enty reveals things without coming right and saying so. Sorry, but I still don't think that the labels are necessarily a reveal.

Sorry, not trying to be difficult. Just merely expressing an opinion. I could be totally wrong and maybe it is.

Maya Rudolf's character was the only funny thing on that show. I stopped watching it long ago.

Mango said...

I hope she's not the answer to the actress with cancer but I'm afraid she is.

They were definitely the affair that took a nasty turn. Wil Arnett is also the guy showing off his young girlfriend on set. I heard recently that Christina is cheating on her fiance with a guy on Broadway too. That show has been awful from day 1. I figured they gave it a second season so the cast could save face.

timebob said...

@Sprinkles you are just arguing with yourself, so stop being so testy.

I was trying to be nice, no need to get bitchy. geebus some of you people.

YOU asked the question.

Count Jerkula said...

#1, Only way I can think of that she doesn't see any of the money from Married w/ Children is if it goes to her ex husband. If someone has another way the union would allow them to not receive residuals on DVD sales and syndication, I'd love to hear.

#2, It is cold, I am a horrible person, I have no empathy for dead junkies.

The story that Enty doesn't tell is that Up All Night had two show runners already leaving in addition to the creator, Emily Spivey. And the show is now supposed to be revamped as a multicamera sitcom shot in front of an audience, with a laugh track. The new episodes would be nothing like the original idea. They were basically keeping Applegate, Arnett, Rudolph and the title.

Applegate was supposed to work on a project that was nothing like the one she had signed on two years ago. And leaving now, a few days before executives realize that it was the awful idea everybody could see coming a thousand miles away and put the show out of misery, allows her to be more available for Anchorman 2.

Not to say there were no tensions between Arnett and Applegate, as implied times and times by Enty. But the phrasing here suggests that it was the reason for her departure, while the retooling would be reason enough. The tensions would however explain the dry mention in the statement.

@timebob - I apologize for coming off as testy. That was not my intention. I don't appreciate your rudeness. I was only asking a question and expressing my opinion. While I would love to stoop to your level with the "geebus some of you people" comment, I'm not going to.

I am a daily reader of this site, and I actually liked you based on your past comments. Now I'm not so sure.

This is why I rarely comment. It's so easy to say something online and have someone take it wrong. I'm not interested in fighting, so I'm done commenting about this.

@Sprinkles. FWIW, I didn't take your original comment to be bitchy or snarky...you were asking a question and someone jumped on it. I'm sorry about that. I hope you'll continue to post. =)

I hope you're right, Angela! I'm sure it's quite similar in Hollywood as it is in our normal suburban offices - if you leave/quit you try not to go all 'scorched earth' and burn bridges if at all possible. Sounds like she kept her mouth shut and walked instead of staying and fighting for something that is not what she was signed on to do.

The first season of this show was so good. I loved their chemistry and the premise of the show really worked, with her being a working mom. But now, it's just silly. I love CA and WA. I wish they could've turned it around.

Angela said...

@NL
Not to mention that leaving now, instead of waiting till the season is over, allows Applegate to apply to the cast of a new pilot. We're in the middle of these things now. Given the wreckage that Up All Night is now, nobody would blame her or consider her unreliable.

To say Arnett is a cold fish is putting it mildly. As with many comic actors, all that manic insanity comes from some other place which has nothing to do with the sort of dour, aloof person he actually is.

Oh, and this sounds as if Applegate was forced out, probably at Arnett's and possibly Rudolph's instigation. Both are much better connected and command much more respect in Hollywood. Of course Applegate would go if they're retooling. But obviously she doesn't want to burn bridges w/Michaels.
