Travis Barker Is Still Scared To Fly

I have no problems or issues with Travis Barker being too scared to get on an airplane. If I was on a plane that crashed and watched people die, I would probably hesitate before getting on one again too. Travis Tweeted that he will not be touring Australia with Blink 182 because he is too scared. What I think is kind of rude of Travis is when he says that if the band still wants to tour Australia without him then he won't be mad if they get a new drummer. Am I reading this way too literally? He seems like he is telling them that they should cancel the tour because he won't go and that they should never play anyplace that Travis won't go to.

I don't fly either...

I don't get meaning that at all. He's putting out a statement as to why he's not going to Australia. Also, probably trying to avoid the inevitable "Travis is leaving the band" stories.

I don't see it as being rude--he's just saying that he understands if they want/need to hire someone in his place for that tour. That's very different from saying "you shouldn't go anywhere I can't go"--after all, he points out that he would have gone there by boat, but they couldn't find a cruise that worked w/the band's schedule. And no, I don't blame him at all for being afraid to fly, especially since he's now the sole survivor of that crash. :-(

That doesn't sound like what he is saying at all. He means that he's okay with them using a different drummer, and he doesn't want to hold the band back from doing a tour in Australia.

I actually think it's really nice of him to publicly announce this, so fans won't think there's some kind of problem if they go to the Australia shows and he's not there.

RamblinPose said...

haven't read about him in ages. why doesn't he keep his pie-whole shut anout fear of flying? It prob doesn't help for the victims families to have to reminded of that pain again.

MM said...

My thoughts exactly, KellyLynn. He's letting his fans know that there's no drama behind the band performing with a different drummer on their Australian leg.

Supermom said...

I don't see him being rude in this statement.

Jason said...

I didn't see that in his statement. If anything, it seems like he said the opposite of that, don't feel like you need to base the tour plans around me just because I caught on fire the last time I was on a plane.

Enty, you're definitely reading into it. That tweet is totally nice. BTW, I love Travis Barker's rap collaborations. Anytime, I need to wake up, I youtube "Let's go" with Busta Rhymes, Twista, Yellawolf, and Lil John.

I agree with everyone else's interpretation, Enty. He's just trying to avoid any backlash from the fans against him or against the other guys in the band. Pretty classy.

Karen said...

Yeah, I think he was just trying to let the fans know that everything was kosher between him and the band. It's a nice, honest message.

Livia said...

RamblinPose: the statement was a way to let the fans know why he wouldn't be there. It's a nice gesture. As for the families of the plane crash victims being "reminded" of the pain - do you honestly believe they don't think about it everyday? I seriously doubt they go about their lives blissfully unthinking about their loved ones until Travis Barker makes a statement.

Meanie Reese said...

Ummmm....reading comprehension issues, Enty? It's pretty clear and concise to me. Good for him and the band, too.

Livia said...

Oh - and I know facility with the English language isn't exactly in Enty's wheelhouse - but now Barker saying he gave the band his blessing to continue means he told them they couldn't play without him? Is it opposite day?

yodelay said...

Probably trying to avoid the rumor mill or the odd blind item or two...

prolixe said...

I see how it *may have* been taken as a bit snarky (gave my blessing... if they still wanted to do the tour without me...), but it sounds pretty harmless. What a terrible situation.

Remember the Grey's Anatomy last season (SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT) with the plane crash? They had to be completely sedated to fly back after it happened.

timebob said...

A flight from LA to Sydney is 14.5 hours, I don't blame him for not wanting to take that long a flight there and back. That would just torture him. He did the right thing bowing out gracefully and asking the band to replace him for those dates.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too keen on a cruise either, id rather fall out of the sky than sink in the murky waters to my death.

digal704 said...

Yea, you are, but what's new?

Lioness70 said...

The Beatles did it in '64 or '65 (don't remember) when Ringo had a throat infection. Like they were ever going to replace Ringo!

I read this the same way.

I don't blame him one bit, because I'm scared shit of planes. He was actually through my worst nightmare. That's why I haven't set foot on one in 17 years.

You need another stiff one, Enty.

Basil said...

I'm pretty certain (reading this) that yes he was indeed giving his band passive/agressive permission to go on without him, but in the back of his mind, hopes they wont. No one wants to see themselves replaced, but he also probably doesn't want the band to lose out on any gigs because he hates flying now.

Am I reading this way too literally?

Just the opposite, you're projecting way too much of your own attitudes onto a fairly neutral quote. The man's a part of the band. It's not at all unreasonable to think they might not want to tour without him, but he went out of his way to let them and the fans know that he's okay with them doing that.

hunter said...

I don't see any passive aggressive statement here, I agree some people are living in Opposite Day?

phoenix said...

I see it as he won't be accompanying the band for the reasons specified and will support their decision to tour without him if that's what they decide to do.

His main concern seems to be providing Australian fans with a one time complete explanation to cover any and all future eventualities.

Kitten Caboodle said...

Enty, I'll back you up. The line 'if they still wanted to do the tour without me.' is a public guilt trip if I ever saw one. There's no way in hell he wants them to tour without him.

Sherry said...

Add to that Livia that Travis was also a victim who was lucky to survive. Travis has expressed survivers remorse in the past as well. I agree with your statement.

Sherry said...

I think he was being magnanimous and wanted to NOT disappoint fans if he was the reason they liked the band. But stood behind his group to bring their music to them regardless of his fears. No guilt trip I can see.

Isn't it amazing how one so straight forward statement can be interpreted in so many other ways?

1. you're reading way too much into it

2. I realize it's your business to look for a$$hole behavior, but this ain't it

3. Really disrespectful considering what he went through.

dragon said...

I understand. Must be scary.

SEAN said...

It can be read that way but I think it was put in specifically for the fans and for a reason not yet commented on: to stop fans from hating on the rest of the band.

JSierra said...

Can't say I blame the fellow.

Ramblin I guess you haven't read much on this story but Travis IS the victim in this situation, he was one of the only survivors and watched his friends and coworkers burn to death. It probably doesn't help for assholes to be so cavalier about his near fatal plane crash either.

The thing is that when the show was announced it was promised he would be there and he would be coming by boat. Now I don't have a problem with him not wanting to fly but be would've known this when tickets went on sale. My sister bought $200 tickets to the concert and has been super excited about seeing the whole band, now 3 days out from the concert, he announces this. She is pissed as I'm sure other people are who bought tickets specifically under the promise that he would be there

Phobias are very easy to treat. No one should suffer or curtail thier activies because of irrational fear.

Jays mama said...

Irrational fear? I don't think watching yourself + 1 friend (the late DJ AM) catch on fire and 2 of your best friends DIE . . . in a PLANE crash constitutes an "irrational" fear.

That is one of the most insensitive comments i have ever read on this forum.

This!! Wow. Irrational fear? Really?!

AKM said...

It's a nice post and not rude at all. I see no passive-aggression, either. Enty has read WAY too much into this.

Anyone who wants to judge phobias has clearly not studied them at length nor worked with clients who have them. :-/

Margaux said...

I'm seeing them on Sunday in Sydney - I'm so excited! I completely understand Travis never wanting to fly again after what he went through - I panic a little on planes as well and I have no past experience to tie to that! Poor guy.

Kay said...

As others have said, I don't agree with your read at all. He's probably trying to nip any potential drama in the bud and make it known he's still in the band and they aren't touring behind his back. Seems like a super chill, low-key guy... Not the type to start public drama via social media... Def the type to try to prevent it though.

Kay said...

@Kiki K... Given the recent events on a cruise ship a LOT of cruises have been cancelled until the spring. It's possible that he had intended to go on one but is not any longer.

Tenisha said...

He's right to say what he did! I'm scared enough as it is to fly...let alone being in a crash and seeing friends die. The band should be understanding of that. Plus...wtf has blink-182 done recently?? I haven't heard any new music...or maybe I live under a rock.

MadLyb said...

I don't blame him. If I'd gone through what he had, I'd never step on a plane again. Right now he's the most famous member with all his gigs with rappers. Personally, I wouldn't want to see Blink 182 without him there. This is a sad situation for the band.

Margaux said...

Maybe he intended to fly. I think I remember when the tour was announced he said he was going to fly - perhaps during that time he was in therapy and mentally preparing himself and working on his fear - and a week out decided he just couldn't do it. @Kiki K, I'm disappointed as well, but I'm not going to go on about paying $400 for mine and my boyfriend's tickets - I'm still going to have an amazing weekend at Soundwave with Metallica, A Perfect Circle, The Offspring, and all that other shit I listened to in high school. Cannot wait.

Wil said...

I don't find it rude at all, I find it a clarification of why he won't be there if the band is with another drummer.

And I am certainly on his side about the fear to fly. After you have been trapped in a tin can with wings that has a problem and you realize you could die .. which is 1000x under what Travis went through!! .. you realize just how scary those last minutes can be in a plane if you know you are going to die. After what Travis went through!?! I don't think I could even stand to look at another plane without becoming completely irrational then catatonic.

csproat said...

Ah poor guy.....
I'm the only member of my family who hasn't been in a plane crash, but I still love to fly.....that said I certainly understand the guys feelings...

Rose said...

Enty I think you are reading way too much into this. The only reason the band got back together was because of the crash in a round about way.

Also, this is a real fear not irrational. Add losing your best friend and survivor's guilt, and then thrown losing the only other person who survived dying a couple years later. He probably has a lot of issues that are much stronger than a phobia.
