Blind Item #3

What celebrity DJ is facing some possible backlash when he accidentally revealed to a magazine that he's a Scientologist? At least one of the major music fests are considering dropping him from the lineup.

Dead Mau$ or whatever the fuck

Dead Maus is from where I live and he looks and dresses like a scrubby 16 year old at a rave in 1998.

Holy shit is he CO$?! That wouldn't surprise me because he is such a hipster. Eh, it also would surprise me in a way BECAUSE he is a hipster lol. He is good friends with guys like Justin Pearson, who I can't imagine would be very cool with that shiz

I think it's stupid to drop someone from a festival lineup because of their politics or their religion, as odd and oppressive as that religion might be.

What's next, dropping someone from the lineup because he's an Orthodox Jew? Or because he voted Republican?

David Miscavage is a douchebag.

Lady Heisenberg said...

I agree. I remember back in the day there was a lot of hoopla over all of those Christian punk and hardcore bands joining Warped Tour. A lot of the bands were pissed but instead just made it their personal mission to make their lives miserable the whole tour

Scrillex. No idea who that is - I just googled top DJs in the world.

PugsterMom said...

It's Skrillex recently on the cover of Rolling Stone. I was shocked when I read the article. (I have a teenage son with a subscription--dont judge!)

Violet said...

Oh, hang on there's some guy called Kaskade who served a Mormon mission back in the day for 2 years - shows a bit of a 'thing' for dodgy 'religions'?

Lady Heisenberg said...

Nice one Pugster! DJs are probably the "celebrities" that I know least aboot lol. Skrillex totally makes sense for this. Pug Life!!!

Lady Heisenberg said...

Oops Violet FTW!!!

LottaColada said...

Yeah it's Skrillex. I take it Connor Cruise won't be playing Coachella anytime soon.

Derek Harvey said...

I hope the EDM trend dies down soon. I do love Grimes though...

Tina Mallette said...

Yes I think dropping him from the festival because he is COS would be unlawful discrimination and I doubt a music festival can afford the lawsuit. Besides then you act no better than the COS when it come to their own members who want to leave or do escape.

Violet said...

@Lady Heisenberg I was just going to go all passive aggressive on you for missing my rather fabulous bit of internet investigation.

Tina Mallette said...

Ok see I am SOOO out of the DJ loop I thought Skrillex was some heavy metal band, it would be a great name for a heavy metal band.

Lady Heisenberg said...

Yeah and I would've totally deserved that. My bad, violet. The glory is all yours for this one! Although I do empathize for poor Pugster having to listen to her child's Skrillex. I don't know wtf I would do if my future spawn had shit taste in music!

@Lady Heisenberg this is a bit off topic from this post but I want to mention that those so-called 'Christian' punk bands are often neo-nazi skinheads. they have no place in mainstream music. these racist asshats suck.

Lady Heisenberg said...

@Tina: Skrillex was in some busted ass hardcore-ish bands before he decided to switch over to electronica. This is actually what a lot of those guys (including JP from Locust and Some Girls) are doing now.

Skrillex grew up as a scientologist. Its not his fault that is all his known his entire life. He doesnt follow it anymore but his parent still do. Google search. Hehe!

What? Skrillex is on the cover of Vogue right now? I thought that was for Kimmy!

Lady Heisenberg said...

You are totally right about that Junior! Two words: TIM LAMBESIS. My brother was actually childhood friends with Tim's brother. Some of those guys are all sorts of fucked up. Thanks for elaborating on that! I remember the guys from NOFX were actually the most outspoken about not wanting them around

Lol, FSP!
u beat me to it.

I don't get paying ticket prices at the same level as you would to see a real/live established band, for a DJ as my nieces do.

I was at one of the Virgin Music festivals just a few years ago and waiting to see Franz Ferdinand who were headlining the 2nd stage. The National a band I had never heard of and were awesome played in the 3rd spot and then before the headliners come out, they bring out a DJ. The music festival already had a DJ tent in another area of the festival. WTF. All the FF fans near the front of the stage were looking at each other like WTF. It seemed to take forever until finally FF came out and the DJ's fans left. Ah live music, thank you. It was worth the ordeal.

My thought was Skrillex too. But I agree. It shouldn't matter what someone's religion is so long as it doesn't espouse hate. Frankly I'm not sure how you can be Christian AND Neo-Nazi.

Pogue Mahone said...

Firing someone for their religion is JUST as discriminatory as firing them for being gay. Discrimination is discrimination.

plokzy said...

This Christian-neo nazi association is dubious at best. Just cause 2-3 bands are dont assume they all are

Perfect, Derek.

Christianity, ZOG and white power ideology go hand in hand.

The festival considering dropping him is probably Coachella and it's not because he's a Scientologist.

It's because there's an 88 page thread on the Coachella message board in the Lineup section for this year titled "I never realized how horrible Skrillex was until now" and there is nary a positive post within about him. Additionally, his fans are generally known for being "douchenozzles".

Coachella needs to look out for their brand.

Seven of Eleven said...

They're dropping him because he's a $cio? SHELLEY, the end is nigh!

Sherry said...

Really krk67? Cuz now I'm laughing about his silly hair catching fire on his birthday.

krk67 said...

88 page thread about how much Skrillex sucks

krk67 said...

Religion ain't got nothing to do with it. It's probably highly unlikely that Coachella would drop Skrillex but they really should try to.

PJ said...

I'm in total agreement @Nutty_Flavor. Though I personally find the CO$ and all of their alleged doings to be entirely scary, creepy and inappropriate, religious descrimination, hell, ANY type of discrimination in the workplace is illegal for a reason. If this blind is true then the people behind this concert/venue should be sued and sued in a very big way. As another commenter said, what's next? "No Jewish/Christian/Muslim/Hindi/Buddist/etc." performers?! Please. That would NEVER be seen as acceptable and thank God for it! A person's personal faith or lack thereof is no one else's business and certainly has nothing to do with how well they perform their job.

You know you're old when your clueless about the whole dub step movement and that the only thing you know about skillrex is his hair caught fire..

Chief2224 said...

krk67, thanks for sharing the link to that thread! I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music but I just never got Skillrex. I thought it was just because I'm an old. I'm happy to know it's because he really does suck ;-)

And I agree with Nutty and others...Scientology isn't cool but it's not right to cancel the show because of that (assuming that's the reason).

Jason Blue Eyes said...

I also agree with you, Nutty. Dropping someone from a lineup because of their religion or political affiliation is stupid and you only wind up pissing off more people as a result.

However, I would look the other way in the case of that borderline racist, sexist piece of shit Ted Nugent. Fuck him.

Co$ isn't a real religion, so theoretical comparisons to real religions don't apply.
And nobody should be stupid enough to give the real reason when no reason is sufficient and legal.

8=====D aka Lil Tool. KermitGosnellKnobJockey said...

So he will be dropped because he is swindled by a legal (with commercials during the super bowl) sect. Double combo of unluck mixed with others' bigotry.

Its Danny Masterson. aka - DJ Mom Jeans. He's married to Bijou Phillips. He is also still bff with Laura Prepon. They all got into CO$ while doing That 70's show!

Marie Lexingdale said...

It's Steve Aoki. He's always hanging out with CO$ peeps

Lady Heisenberg said...

Same. All I really know about him is the Benihana connection and THIS amazing old groupie account, which was allegedly a hoax that also embarrassed Duke

Fun fact: Kaskade was my brother's roommate in college. Not a Scientologist.

Fun* fact: getting fired for being gay is not illegal in the US, at least not on a federal level. Not a protected class. (ENDA awaits a vote in the House, sine April 2013; I won't hold my breath.)

Being hired for a festival is providing a service for a contractual amount of money. That is not the same being as an employee which comes with workplace protections. It is an independent contractor or vendor role. If contracts aren't signed, a festival can hire or fire anyone for any reason. If a contract is signed, if the festival doesn't want them, they can honor the contract's "out" clause, whatever that may be. Often it's that the festival pays part of the performance fee up front and the balance after the appearance. Regardless, you can choose your providers for any reason and pass on them as well.
